Variables Associated with Self-reported Language Impairment in Multiple Sclerosis: A Regression Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Persons with multiple sclerosis (MS) can experience language-related symptoms such as difficulty with word finding, understanding verbal information, and structuring discourse. These symptoms have negative psychological and interpersonal consequences. Studies exploring characteristics of language impairment in MS are limited. The aim of this study was to investigate what symptom-related (eg, fatigue), demographic (eg, age), clinical (eg, MS type), social network, and quality of life (QOL) variables are associated with language impairment in MS. METHODS: Participants were recruited

"If there was no stigma around it, I would tell people": perspectives of UK youth living with perinatally acquired HIV, their social networks and healthcare professionals on HIV status sharing.

Sharing one's HIV status with others is complex for youth with perinatally acquired HIV (PAH). However, the support from sharing one's HIV status may assist with HIV-related challenges. This study explored barriers and facilitators of HIV status sharing among UK-based youth living with PAH. Drawing on semi-structured interviews with ten youth with PAH, ten members of their social networks and five HIV professionals, this study examined the complex relational nature of disclosure. The data were examined using thematic analysis. While many youths expressed a desire to be open, sharing was shaped

Structural connectivity of grandiose versus vulnerable narcissism as models of social dominance and subordination.

Social dominance and subordination have been linked to fronto-limbic and fronto-thalamic networks and are related to phenotypes such as grandiose vs. vulnerable narcissistic traits. The latter have been linked to clinical features such as empathy and emotional regulation. In this study we tested the hypotheses that narcissistic traits are associated with white matter integrity in fasciculus uncinate, cingulum, and anterior thalamic radiation (ATR). We applied the Pathological Narcissism Inventory (PNI) to assess narcissistic traits in a sample of 267 psychiatrically healthy individuals. We use

Online Communities for Child-Attracted Persons as Informal Mental Health Care: Exploring Self-Reported Wellbeing Outcomes.

Online support communities are gaining attention among child-attracted persons (CAPs). Though research has largely focused on the negative consequences these environments create for potential offending, they may also provide a beneficial alternative to more formal treatment settings. To assess the utility for clinical and therapeutic purposes, this analysis focused on subcultural dynamics to examine self-reported wellbeing outcomes of participation in a Dutch forum for CAPs. A total of 15 semi-structured interviews were conducted with moderators, members and mental health professionals involve

Excavating the social representations and perceived barriers of organ donation in China over the past decade: A hybrid text analysis approach.

BACKGROUND: Organ donation has been claimed as a prosocial behavior to prolong the recipient's life and deliver great love. However, the supply-demand ratio of organs in China is highly unbalanced. Being entangled with multiple factors derived from individual and supra-individual levels, organ donation in China is important but sensitive. Previous scholars usually depended on obtrusive approaches to explore the facilitators and hindrances of organ donation, which is hard to discover genuine perceptions toward organ donation. Besides, relatively limited scholarly attention has been paid to what

Social barriers to listing for adult liver transplantation: their prevalence and association with program characteristics.

Social barriers to effective medical care are mandated to be routinely assessed as part of an evaluation for liver transplantation. This study explores how frequently liver transplant programs encounter these barriers in patients undergoing an evaluation and whether programs with higher proportions of Medicaid patients, historically disadvantaged minority patients, and rural patients encounter social barriers more frequently. A survey for assessing patient demographics and social barriers was electronically completed by representatives of 61 of 104 eligible US adult liver transplant programs (

Gender Differences in the Development of Growth and Fixed Mindsets Among Chinese Adolescents: A Cross-Lagged Panel Network Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Students' mindsets about the malleability of their abilities shape their academic performance, social adaptation, and psychological well-being, making it important to track how these beliefs change during adolescence. Although mindsets undergo substantial change in this period, most studies have used latent variable models that ignore the dynamic interactions among mindset items. Examining how specific items change over time can thus reveal how mindsets develop and whether this process differs between boys and girls. METHODS: This study examined the temporal links among the 10 g

Group Membership Modulates the Neural Circuitry Underlying Third Party Punishment.

This research aims to explore the neural correlates involved in altruistic punishment, parochial altruism and anti-social punishment, using the Third-Party Punishment (TPP) game. In particular, this study considered these punishment behaviors in in-group vs. out-group game settings, to compare how people behave with members of their own national group and with members of another national group. The results showed that participants act altruistically to protect in-group members. This study indicates that norm violation in in-group (but not in out-group) settings results in increased activity in

Examining the social and behavioral dynamics of substance use in a longitudinal network study in rural Appalachia.

BACKGROUND: Prior studies have shown that individuals and their peers often have similar substance use behaviors, but the mechanisms driving these similarities - particularly in rural settings, are not well understood. The primary objectives of this analysis are to (1) identify factors that contribute to relationship turnover and maintenance within a rural network of persons who use drugs (PWUD), (2) determine whether assimilation and/or homophily shape participants use of injection drugs, heroin, and stimulants (methamphetamine and cocaine), and (3) assess the extent that these mechanisms inf

Challenged and changed: Quiet ego and posttraumatic growth in mothers raising children with autism spectrum disorder.

Posttraumatic growth theory posits that when life circumstances are perceived as stressful, secondary appraisal processes can be recruited in ways to facilitate both coping efforts and personal growth. Using a mixed-methods approach, we found mothers' most challenging experiences involved child behavior (e.g. aggression, communication, and social issues) and psychosocial impacts (e.g. lack of social support, perceived judgment of others, perceived loss, and personal distress). Descriptions of most rewarding experiences reflect posttraumatic growth frameworks including constructive perceptions
