Gender Affirmation and Resiliency Among Black Transgender Women With and Without HIV Infection.

Purpose: Among black transgender women (transwomen) at high risk of HIV acquisition or already living with HIV/AIDS, the study examined whether medical or socially based gender affirming factors may contribute differentially to selected measures of resiliency, perceived stress, and a scale measure of mental health outcomes. This question has implications for clinical care and counseling of this population. Methods: Seventy-seven black transwomen were recruited to participate in a private, face-to-face structured interview. Two index measures of gender affirmation (GA) were constructed from the

Gender Disparity Among Homeless People: Evidence From a Territory-Wide Survey in Hong Kong.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined gender differences and their impact on the livelihoods of the homeless population in Hong Kong, exploring variables such as homeless duration, mental health, social relationships, economic status, risky behavior, and welfare assistance utilization. BACKGROUND: Gender inequalities worsen the health vulnerabilities of homeless women. While existing studies have focused on Western contexts, there is a lack of understanding in non-Western settings, especially in East Asian regions with a strongly patriarchal culture like Hong Kong. METHODS: Based on gender socializ

Personal relative deprivation and pro-environmental intentions.

Personal relative deprivation (PRD; the belief that one is worse off than other people who are similar to oneself) is associated with a redu … tively. In each study, participants self-reported PRD and ENV; they also indicated their subjective social status (where they come on a national "ladder" of social class) and reported their income, education, age, and gender/sex. All three studies found a negative correlation between PRD and ENV. However, multiple regression analyses in which ENV was regressed …

Associations Between Postpartum Depression, Breastfeeding, and Oxytocin Levels in Latina Mothers.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression (PPD), often comorbid with anxiety, is the leading medical complication among new mothers. Latinas have elevated risk of PPD, which has been associated with early breastfeeding cessation. Lower plasma oxytocin (OT) levels have also been associated with PPD in non-Latinas. This pilot study explores associations between PPD, anxiety, breastfeeding, and OT in Latinas. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-four Latinas were enrolled during their third trimester of pregnancy and followed through 8 weeks postpartum. Demographic data were collected at enrollment. Depression

Health literacy, social support, and health activation as determinants of health-promoting behaviors in patients with chronic heart failure: a COM-B model-based path analysis.

BACKGROUND: Chronic heart failure (CHF) is a progressive and recurrent condition associated with high hospitalization rates, substantial healthcare burden, and impaired quality of life. Health-promoting behaviors are essential for long-term disease management in patients with CHF, yet their formation and maintenance are often constrained by individual capability, external support, and motivational factors. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the current status and associated factors of health-promoting behaviors among patients with chronic heart failure and to clarify the pathways among re

The Impact of Socioeconomic Factors on Cognitive Ability in Community-Dwelling Older Adults: Mediating Effect of Social Participation and Social Support.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Previous studies have shown that socioeconomic status influences cognitive health in adults. Therefore, it is important for the development of healthy aging policies to further investigate the effect of specific socioeconomic factors on cognitive function in older people and the possible mechanism. In this study, three specific socioeconomic factors (i.e., income, occupation, and education) were used as independent variables, and social support and social participation were used as the parallel or serial mediating variables to investigate the effect on cognitive functio

Prevalence of anemia among reproductive women in different social group in India: Cross-sectional study using nationally representative data.

BACKGROUND: The common cause of anemia in the general population is iron deficiency. Anemia is adversely affecting women of reproductive age and child health which in turn results in increased morbidity and maternal death, and also hamper social-economic growth. Reproductive women are more prone to anemia due to inadequate dietary intake and iron loss during menstruation and pregnancy. OBJECTIVES: This study examined the level and trend of anemia prevalence among the socially disadvantaged group (SC&ST, OBC) of women as compared to the other women (general) and identified the main responsible

Geographic disparities in peripartum cardiomyopathy outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Cardiomyopathy causes more than a third of late postpartum pregnancy-related deaths in the United States, and racial disparities in outcomes among pregnant individuals with cardiomyopathy exist. Underlying community factors may contribute to disparities in peripartum cardiomyopathy outcomes. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify the geographic distribution of and disparities in peripartum cardiomyopathy outcomes, hypothesizing that patients living in communities with higher social vulnerability may have worse outcomes. STUDY DESIGN: This was a retrospective cohort study of pati

Social needs and health-related quality of life among hematologic cancer survivors.

OBJECTIVES: Recent studies have examined social needs (social determinants of health) among cancer survivors, but studies have not specifically focused on patients with leukemia or lymphoma. We examined food insecurity and other social needs among hematologic cancer survivors, including individuals who had completed primary therapy for leukemia, lymphoma, or multiple myeloma. A particular focus of the study was on the relationship between social needs and health-related quality of life. METHODS: We conducted a postal survey of a multiethnic cohort of hematologic cancer survivors who reside in

Examining the Role of the Social Vulnerability Index in the Association between Race/Ethnicity and Breast Cancer Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Socioeconomic and environmental inequities may increase vulnerability to breast cancer among racial and ethnic groups. We examined whether the social vulnerability index (SVI) mediates associations between race/ethnicity and breast cancer outcomes, including late-stage diagnosis and breast cancer-specific mortality. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of 739,448 cases with breast cancer from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results 18 registries (2000-2016). Mediation analysis evaluated five 2010 SVI themes-socioeconomic status, household composition, minority st

Additive and Multiplicative Effects of Socially Stigmatized Identities Using Linear Regression to Model Effects on Self-Reported Overall Health as Reported in the All of Us Research Program: Quantitative Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with one or more socially stigmatized identities experience extensive health disparities, resulting in poorer health outcomes. However, most studies consider the effects of only individual stigmatized identities. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to quantitatively estimate the additive and multiplicative effects of stigmatized identities on self-reported overall health. METHODS: We used survey data from 387,411 participants in the All of Us Research Program, which has assembled a disease-agnostic cohort intended to reflect the US population, to statistically estimate the first- and

Exploring the Link between Altitude of Residence and Smoking Patterns in the United States.

INTRODUCTION: Smoking-related diseases affect 16 million Americans, causing approximately 480,000 deaths annually. The prevalence of cigarette smoking varies regionally across the United States, and previous research indicates that regional rates of smoking-related diseases demonstrate a negative association with altitude. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between altitude and the prevalence of cigarette smoking by county (N = 3106) in the United States. We hypothesized that smoking prevalence among adults would be negatively associated with mean county altitude. MET
