Preventing cardiovascular disease within the built and living environment: An Expert Opinion.

Cardiovascular (CV) health is influenced not only by biological factors but also by the environments in which people live. The environment comprises interconnected built, living, and social domains that shape health behaviours, psychosocial well-being, environmental exposures, and access to resources. Within this framework, the built environment, the human-made settings that structure daily life, plays a key role in influencing physical activity, dietary behaviours, social interactions, safety, and overall well-being. Neighbourhoods are embedded within historical, legal, political, cultural, a

[Racial and gender inequalities in health in Latin America: historical plots and daily challenges of Black women].

This study analyzes the social and health inequalities that affect Latin American women, situating Black women in the historical and structural bases of the coloniality of power, knowledge, and being. It aims to problematize how racism, sexism, and patriarchy - legacies of colonial modernity - shape the intersectional determination of health inequities sustained by political, economic, and symbolic systems that naturalize the subordination of racialized bodies. This theoretical-analytical essay articulates the critical literature based on decolonial and intersectional references and analyzes d

Social stress during adolescence activates long-term microglia inflammation insult in reward processing nuclei.

The experience of social stress during adolescence is associated with higher vulnerability to drug use. Increases in the acquisition of cocaine self-administration, in the escalation of cocaine-seeking behavior, and in the conditioned rewarding effects of cocaine have been observed in rodents exposed to repeated social defeat (RSD). In addition, prolonged or severe stress induces a proinflammatory state with microglial activation and increased cytokine production. The aim of the present work was to describe the long-term effects induced by RSD during adolescence on the neuroinflammatory respon

Emotional and social behaviors elicited by electrical stimulation of the insula in the macaque monkey.

Evidence from a large number of brain imaging studies has shown that, in humans, the insula, and especially its anterior part, is involved in emotions and emotion recognition. Typically, however, these studies revealed that, besides the insula, a variety of other cortical and subcortical areas are also active. Brain imaging studies are correlative in nature, and, as such, they cannot give indications about the necessary contribution of the different centers involved in emotions. In the present study, we aimed to define more clearly the role of the insula in emotional and social behavior of the

The association between attachment style, social mentalities, and paranoid ideation: an analogue study.

OBJECTIVES: The study was a novel exploration of possible associations between attachment status and psychotic phenomenology, applied within a social mentality framework (Gilbert, 1989, 2001). We hypothesized that attachment avoidance would be associated with higher endorsement of paranoid ideation. Consistent with social mentality theory, we hypothesized that higher levels of interpersonal problems would also be associated with higher paranoia scores and greater attachment avoidance. DESIGN: An analogue cross-sectional cohort design was used. METHODS: Two hundred and thirteen individuals co

[The distressed personality (type D)--correlations with anger, aggression and hostility].

Type D (distressed personality) comprises the joint tendency to experience negative emotions (negative affectivity) and to inhibit these emotions in social situations (social inhibition). The distressed personality can be assessed by the Type D scale (DS14). In the present study, the German version of the DS14 was to be validated especially with regard to its interrelation with anger, aggression and hostility. The study included a clinical sample of 90 patients with coronary heart disease and a nonclinical sample of 86 participants. The two-factor structure of the DS14 could be confirmed in bo

Evaluation of a system of structured, pro-active care for chronic depression in primary care: a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: People with chronic depression are frequently lost from effective care, with resulting psychological, physical and social morbidity and considerable social and financial societal costs. This randomised controlled trial will evaluate whether regular structured practice nurse reviews lead to better mental health and social outcomes for these patients and will assess the cost-effectiveness of the structured reviews compared to usual care. The hypothesis is that structured, pro-active care of patients with chronic depression in primary care will lead to a cost-effective improvement in m

Body site-specific microbiota reflect sex and age-class among wild spotted hyenas.

Host-associated microbial communities, henceforth 'microbiota', can affect the physiology and behavior of their hosts. In mammals, host ecological, social and environmental variables are associated with variation in microbial communities. Within individuals in a given mammalian species, the microbiota also partitions by body site. Here, we build on this work and sequence the bacterial 16S rRNA gene to profile the microbiota at six distinct body sites (ear, nasal and oral cavities, prepuce, rectum and anal scent gland) in a population of wild spotted hyenas (Crocuta crocuta), which are highly s

Validity and reliability of Kano Test for Social Nicotine Dependence.

PURPOSE: "Social nicotine dependence" is a newly-coined phrase for describing a psychological and psychosocial state associated with smoking. That new dependence is defined as a misperception of smoking caused by smokers' attempts, for example, to deny the ill effects of tobacco and/or to justify themselves by regarding smoking as acceptable cultural and social behavior. It can be quantified by a 10-item questionnaire, the Kano Test for Social Nicotine Dependence (KTSND). We examined the internal consistency as well as the criterion-related and construct validity and factor structure of KTSND.

Atypical development of white matter structural networks in children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder: a graph theory study.

BACKGROUND: Atypical brain connectivity is considered a key neurobiological feature underlying the heterogeneous clinical manifestations of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, findings on brain networks in ASD are inconsistent, likely owing to the effects of developmental factors. In addition, how large-scale brain networks in ASD differ across developmental stages remains unclear. We aimed to elucidate the atypical developmental patterns of white matter (WM) structural networks in children and adolescents with ASD using a graph-theoretical approach. METHODS: Diffusion/T1-weighted brain

Depression and Social Capital Among High-Altitude Residents in Ladakh: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Depression and social capital (SC) have been increasingly studied in diverse cultural settings, yet little is known about their relationship in high-altitude regions such as Ladakh, India. AIMS: This study examines the association between social capital and depressive tendencies among Ladakhi residents. METHOD: We conducted a cross-sectional survey of 140 residents of Domkhar village, Ladakh, during community medical camps in 2018 to 2019. Depressive tendencies were assessed using the PHQ-9 (cutoff ⩾5, selected to capture mild depressive states based on Asian literature). Social

Social dominance and 22-year all-cause mortality in men.

OBJECTIVE: Research findings suggest that, in addition to hostility, social dominance-related variables may be related to morbidity and mortality. The purposes of the present study were to evaluate a) whether pressured social dominance (defined as a pattern of structured-interview-defined characteristics of verbal competition, immediateness of response, and fast speaking rate) was related to long-term health outcomes, namely, all-cause mortality, and b) whether individuals characterized by other patterns of structured-interview-derived characteristics also varied in terms of mortality. METHOD

Violence at Rikers Island: Does the Doctor Make It Worse? A Clinician Ethnographer's Work Amidst Carceral Structural Violence.

In this article, I describe the dilemmas of working as a physician-ethnographer within the Rikers Island jail healthcare system before and at the beginning of the COVID-19 epidemic in April 2020. The Rikers Island jail system in New York City has been in the national spotlight as a space of violence, trauma, and death amidst calls to decarcerate by community members and abolition advocates. This article is a personal reflection on the labor and subjectivity of healthcare providers and their positionality to multiple axes of structural and interpersonal violence while attempting to provide care

Enlargement of visual processing regions in social anxiety disorder is related to symptom severity.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is associated with altered brain function and structure, but most structural studies include small samples and findings are mixed. This study compared regional gray matter volume between 48 SAD patients and 29 healthy controls (HC) as well as the relationship between volume and symptom severity. Structural magnetic resonance images from SAD patients and HC were evaluated using standard voxel-based morphometry (VBM) processing in the SPM8 software package. Social anxiety symptom severity was rated in SAD patients by a clinician using the Liebowitz Social Anxiety Sc

Barriers to cancer treatment and care for people experiencing structural vulnerability: a secondary analysis of ethnographic data.

BACKGROUND: A key pillar of Canada's healthcare system is universal access, yet significant barriers to cancer services remain for people impacted by structural vulnerability (e.g., poverty, homelessness, racism). For this reason, cancer is diagnosed at a later stage, resulting in worse patient outcomes, a reduced quality of life, and at a higher cost to the healthcare system. Those who face significant barriers to access are under-represented in cancer control services Consequently, these inequities result in people dying from cancers that are highly treatable and preventable, however; little
