Severely mentally ill women's HIV risk: the influence of social support, substance use, and contextual risk factors.

In structured interviews with 96 women with severe mental illness, nearly two-thirds had not used condoms during sexual intercourse in the past 3 months, more than two-thirds had sex with multiple partners, and almost one-third had been treated for a sexually transmitted infection (STI) in the past year. Women who reported fewer sexual risk context factors, such as having sex with someone the participant did not know or transactional sex, had fewer sexual partners. Larger social support networks were associated with less frequent sex after drug use. In turn, women who less often had sex after …

Social support, life events, and behavioral characteristics of psychologically distressed adolescents at high risk for attempting suicide.

Differences in social support, behavioral characteristics and life events between four groups of adolescents were investigated, one group consisting of suicide attempters and depressed adolescents showing problematic psychological scores and high risk for attempting suicide, and three other groups with lower risk and other (combinations of) psychological characteristics. The high-risk group distinguished itself from the psychologically most "normal" group by reporting less support and understanding from siblings and relations outside the family, more changes in living situation (life-time), mo…

Psychological factors in recurrent genital herpes infection: stress, coping style, social support, emotional dysfunction, and symptom recurrence.

The relationship among stress, coping style, emotional dysfunction, social support, and severity of symptoms (frequency of recurrence, and pain, duration, and bother of recurrences) was investigated in 35 females and 32 males suffering from severe cases of genital herpes infection. Level of emotional dysfunction as measured by the SCL-90 approached two standard deviations above the mean as compared with non-patient normals, and frequency, pain, and bother of recurrences were associated with level of emotional dysfunction. Negative life stress (as measured by the Life Experiences Survey) was un…

Depression and subjective well-being in older adults living in low-density areas during the COVID-19 pandemic: the role of social participation and social support.

INTRODUCTION: Participation in social activities contributes to enhanced well-being, reduced rates of comorbidities, and diminished feelings of depression among older adults. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has altered social interaction in many ways, and its impacts on the well-being and mental health of older adults, particularly those living in more isolated regions, are still poorly understood. This cross-sectional study intends to investigate the relationship between social participation, social support, subjective well-being, and depression among older adults residing in a region with low…

Age-Related Internalized Stigma and Depressive Symptoms in Older Adults: The Moderating Role of Perceived Social Support.

BACKGROUND: Age-related internalized stigma may be associated with depressive symptoms in later life, whereas perceived social support may represent an important psychosocial resource. This study examined the associations of age-related internalized stigma and perceived social support with depressive symptoms and tested whether perceived social support moderated the association between age-related internalized stigma and depressive symptoms. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 162 community-dwelling adults aged 65 years and older. Age-related internalized stigma, perceived social sup…

Social Risk-Informed Decision Support and Blood Pressure Control in a Primary Care Cluster Randomized Controlled Trial.

PURPOSE: Health care systems increasingly incorporate social risk data into electronic health records (EHRs) to address needs like food, housing, and transportation insecurity. This study evaluated whether EHR-integrated social clinical decision support (SCDS) tools improved control of blood pressure (BP) and hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) and increased social risk-informed care and documentation in community-based clinics. METHODS: We conducted a cluster randomized trial in a large primary care network. This pragmatic trial was designed to assess tool impact in real-world clinic conditions. Six clin

Background: Postpartum depression (PPD) is an important maternal mental health concern. Knowledge, self-efficacy, and social support may be associated with the recognition and severity of depressive symptoms. This study assessed PPD knowledge among pregnant women/mothers and adults from the broader population in Saudi Arabia and examined the associations of self-efficacy and perceived social support with depressive-symptom scores in the maternal group. Methods: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted in Saudi Arabia from January to March 2021. Convenience and chain-referral sampling were…

Does social support always help? Emotion regulation pathways through self-compassion in maltreated adolescents' PTSD and growth.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents exposed to childhood maltreatment often experience co-occurring posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and posttraumatic growth (PTG). Perceived social support may influence these outcomes through emotion regulation strategies, yet its effects can be both protective and paradoxical. Self-compassion, comprising positive and negative dimensions, has been conceptualized as an emotion regulation strategy that may mediate these relationships. METHODS: A two-wave longitudinal design with a six-month interval was employed. Participants were 1,773 Chinese adolescents (52.3% fema…

Pathways to Peer Support in Sober Living Houses: The Importance of Social Model Environments and Helping Behaviors.

Sober living houses (SLHs) provide abstinence-based living environments for individuals in recovery from substance use disorders. The social model approach to recovery that is used emphasizes helping in recovery. Here, we test whether greater social model activity is related to more helping in the house, and whether these helping behaviors subsequently predict stronger support among SLH peers. Longitudinal data were collected from N = 205 SLH residents with past-year alcohol use disorder who entered 28 SLHs in Los Angeles, California. Regression models tested whether social model activity (Rec

The Association Between Social Support and Suicidal Ideation Among Undergraduate Students: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Background: Suicide among emerging adults has become a significant global public health concern. Suicidal ideation is the prerequisite for suicide, and social support is recognized as a key protective factor against suicidal ideation. However, the relationship between the strength and consistency of social support and suicidal ideation among undergraduate students remains unclear. This study synthesized empirical studies to quantify the relationship between social support and suicidal ideation among undergraduate students and determine the different correlations between various sources of soci…

Social Support and Psychological Capital in Older Adults with Esophageal and Gastric Cancer: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal cancers impose a significant psychological burden on older adults by depleting crucial personal resources. While social support is a known buffer against distress, its specific association with psychological capital (PsyCap) in this population, particularly after the completion of primary treatment, remains under-investigated. This study aimed to examine the relationship between perceived social support and PsyCap (self-efficacy, hope, resilience, and optimism) in this patient group. METHODS: This descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted in Tehran, Iran, b…
