Kinetic characteristics and predictive models of methylmercury production in paddy soils.

Understanding the mercury (Hg) methylation process is important for the management of paddy soils contaminated by Hg. In this work, samples of eighteen paddy soils with varying soil properties were spiked with inorganic Hg and subjected to a 90 d flooding period. Soil pH and redox potential (Eh) were measured in situ at intervals, and soils were sampled for the analysis of methylmercury (MeHg). The Hg methylation efficiency increased with flooding time and reached a relatively steady state at 30 d of incubation, ranging from 0.08% to 2.52%, and was significantly correlated with the in situ soi…

A hidden battle in the dirt: Soil amoebae interactions with Paracoccidioides spp.

Paracoccidioides spp. are thermodimorphic fungi that cause a neglected tropical disease (paracoccidioidomycosis) that is endemic to Latin America. These fungi inhabit the soil, where they live as saprophytes with no need for a mammalian host to complete their life cycle. Despite this, they developed sophisticated virulence attributes allowing them not only to survive in host tissues but also to cause disease. A hypothesis for selective pressures driving the emergence or maintenance of virulence of soil fungi is their interaction with soil predators such as amoebae and helminths. We evaluated t…

Soil sterilisation methods for use in OECD 106: How effective are they?

Under many circumstances chemical risk assessments for pharmaceuticals and other substances are required to differentiate between 'loss' of a chemical from the aqueous phase as a result of abiotic (sorption or precipitation reactions) or biotic (biodegradation) processes. To distinguish only abiotic processes, it is necessary to work under sterile conditions. Reported methods include poisoning the soil with sodium azide, irradiation and autoclaving. However, a key aspect of any testing is the representativeness of the matrix and so any sterilisation procedure needs to ensure that the integrity…

Remediation techniques for heavy metal-contaminated soils: Principles and applicability.

Globally there are over 20millionha of land contaminated by the heavy metal(loid)s As, Cd, Cr, Hg, Pb, Co, Cu, Ni, Zn, and Se, with the present soil concentrations higher than the geo-baseline or regulatory levels. In-situ and ex-situ remediation techniques have been developed to rectify the heavy metal-contaminated sites, including surface capping, encapsulation, landfilling, soil flushing, soil washing, electrokinetic extraction, stabilization, solidification, vitrification, phytoremediation, and bioremediation. These remediation techniques employ containment, extraction/removal, and immobil…

Immobilization of cadmium in polluted soils by phytogenic iron oxide nanoparticles.

While phytogenic nanomaterials have been successfully used to remove heavy metals in wastewater, the potential to successfully use such materials to immobilize heavy metals in soils is still unclear. In this study, phytogenic iron oxide nanoparticles (PION) were used to immobilize cadmium (Cd) in six soils. Amendment with PION effectively immobilized Cd, with a concomitant increase in the concentrations of iron oxides, soil pH and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) under both oxic and anoxic conditions. However, observed changes in soil properties and Cd fractions were different under oxic and ano…

Unraveling Microbial Communities Associated with Methylmercury Production in Paddy Soils.

Rice consumption is now recognized as an important pathway of human exposure to the neurotoxin methylmercury (MeHg), particularly in countries where rice is a staple food. Although the discovery of a two-gene cluster hgcAB has linked Hg methylation to several phylogenetically diverse groups of anaerobic microorganisms converting inorganic mercury (Hg) to MeHg, the prevalence and diversity of Hg methylators in microbial communities of rice paddy soils remain unclear. We characterized the abundance and distribution of hgcAB genes using third-generation PacBio long-read sequencing and Illumina sh…

Intervention strategies to reduce the burden of soil-transmitted helminths in India.

Soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections continue to be a major global cause of morbidity, with a large proportion of the burden of STH infections occurring in India. In addition to direct health impacts of these infections, including anaemia and nutritional deficiencies in children, these infections also significantly impact economic development, as a result of delays in early childhood cognitive development and future income earning potential. The current World Health Organization strategy for STH is focused on morbidity control through the application of mass drug administration to all pr…

Fluoroquinolones (FQs) in the environment: A review on their abundance, sorption and toxicity in soil.

The use of fluoroquinolones (FQs) antibiotics as therapeutic agents and growth promoters is increasing worldwide; however their extensive uses are also resulting in antibiotic resistance among world communities. FQs have also become one of the major contaminants in the waste water bodies, which are not even completely removed during the treatment processes. Furthermore, their abundance in agricultural resources, such as the irrigation water, the bio-solids and the livestock manure can also affect the soil micro-environment. These antibiotics in soil tend to interact in several different ways t…

Ecosystem effects and the management of petroleum-contaminated soils on subantarctic islands.

Human activity in the Polar Regions has resulted in petroleum contamination of soils. In this context, subantarctic islands are a unique management challenge for climatic, biological and logistical reasons. In this review we identify the main abiotic factors affecting petroleum-contaminated soils in the subantarctic environment, the primary effects of such contamination on biota, and lessons learned with regards to remediation techniques in this region. The sensitivity of biota to contamination depends on organism life stage, on soil properties, and on the degree of contaminant weathering. Ini…

Effect of Si-rich substances on phosphorous adsorption by sandy soils.

The poor adsorption capacity of sandy soils is one of the primary reasons of a high level of phosphorus (P) leaching. Silicon (Si)-rich soil amendments have the potential to improve the low absorption capacity of sandy soils for P. The objective of this study was to evaluate the ability of different Si-rich materials to regulate P adsorption and retention by sandy soils. Amorphous fine silica (FSS), calcium silicate (CaSiO3), chemically pure CaCO3, and two types of Ca-silicate slags from metal industry (Pro-Sil) and chemical industry (TS) were used in laboratory experiments being conducted wit…

Biogeochemical controls on methylmercury in soils and sediments: Implications for site management.

Management of Hg-contaminated sites poses particular challenges because methylmercury (MeHg), a potent bio-accumulative neurotoxin, is formed in the environment, and concentrations are not generally predictable based solely on total Hg (THg) concentrations. In this review, we examine the state of knowledge regarding the chemical, biological, and physical controls on MeHg production and identify those most critical for contaminated site assessment and management. We provide a list of parameters to assess Hg-contaminated soils and sediments with regard to their potential to be a source of MeHg t…

Detection and quantification of ionophore antibiotics in runoff, soil and poultry litter.

Ionophore antibiotics (IPAs) are widely used as coccidiostats in poultry and other livestock industries to promote growth and prevent infections. Because most of the ingested IPAs are excreted in poultry litter, which is primarily applied as grassland fertilizer, a significant amount of IPAs can be released into the litter-soil-water environment. A robust analytical method has been developed to quantify IPAs (monensin (MON), salinomycin (SAL) and narasin (NAR)) in complex environmental compartments including surface runoff, soil and poultry litter, with success to minimize matrix interference.…

Microbial removal of atmospheric carbon tetrachloride in bulk aerobic soils.

Atmospheric concentrations of carbon tetrachloride (CCl(4)) were removed by bulk aerobic soils from tropical, subtropical, and boreal environments. Removal was observed in all tested soil types, indicating that the process was widespread. The flux measured in field chamber experiments was 0.24 ± 0.10 nmol CCl(4) (m(2) day)(-1) (average ± standard deviation [SD]; n = 282). Removal of CCl(4) and removal of methane (CH(4)) were compared to explore whether the two processes were linked. Removal of both gases was halted in laboratory samples that were autoclaved, dry heated, or incubated in the pre…
