Study protocol for the PHANTOM study: prehospital assessment of noninvasive tissue oximetry monitoring.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic brain injury is a major cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide. It can be worsened by secondary injury particularly with hypoxia or hypotension. Current prehospital guidelines emphasise regular measurement of peripheral oxygen saturation and blood pressure but there is no monitor in use to provide direct information relating to blood flow or oxygen delivery to the brain tissue. This prospective cohort study will assess the utility of near-infrared spectroscopy monitoring in prehospital medicine in demonstrating injury, pathophysiology and associations with long-term f

Identification of visible and near-infrared signature peaks for arboviruses and Plasmodium falciparum.

Arbovirus and malaria infections affect more than half of the world's population causing major financial and physical burden. Current diagnostic tools such as microscopy, molecular and serological techniques are technically demanding, costly, or time consuming. Near-infrared spectroscopy has recently been demonstrated as a potential diagnostic tool for malaria and Dengue virus and as a screening tool for disease vectors. However, pathogen specific absorption peaks that allow detection of these infections are yet to be described. In this study, we identified unique visible and near-infrared pea

Cerebral regional oxygen fluctuations and decline during clinically silent focal electroencephalographic seizures in a neonate.

We describe a neonate with tuberous sclerosis complex and right frontal cortical dysplasia who underwent simultaneous near-infrared spectroscopy and electroencephalography (EEG) during repetitive clinically silent right frontal EEG seizures. The seizures produced a progressive decline in regional oxygen saturation index and wider regional oxygen saturation index fluctuations in the right hemisphere than in the left hemisphere. We conclude that recurrent clinically silent focal EEG seizures in this neonate were associated with lateralizing near-infrared spectroscopy changes suggestive of relati

Infrared spectroscopy and chemometrics for predicting commercial categories of virgin olive oils and supporting the panel test.

The aim of this study was to create rapid and sustainable instrumental methods for screening virgin olive oils (VOOs) to support the Panel test. The Panel test is the official sensory method used in EU regulations to determine the commercial category of VOOs. The Panel test is based on a time-consuming and expensive approach, so reducing the number of samples to be analysed is crucial. Spectroscopy offers a potential solution for quickly determining VOOs composition and predicting their quality grade. In this context, three spectroscopic techniques were explored: Near-Infrared (NIR), Fourier-T

Rapid reagent free COVID19 detection using MEMS based FTIR spectroscopy and machine learning in NIR and MIR regions.

This study presents rapid, reagent-free detection of COVID-19 using miniaturized MEMS-based Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometers integrated with machine learning models. Two portable spectrometers analyze 363 nasopharyngeal swab samples stored in viral transport medium (VTM). The first spectrometer covers the near-infrared (NIR) region (1.3-2.6 μm) and second spectrometer extends from the near infrared to the mid infrared (MIR) region (1.75-4.0 μm). The NIR system uses a transmission configuration, while the one extended to the MIR performs attenuated total reflectance (ATR) measure

Forensic investigation of arson residue by infrared and Raman spectroscopy: From conventional to non-destructive techniques.

Arson can result in highly challenging and complicated crime scenes. Much physical evidence undergoes chemical degradation because of the destructive nature of fire, while accelerants either completely burn or evaporate, and may be present in traces within any of the decomposed materials. To identify the original material and the accelerant involved, it is necessary to use advanced analytical techniques. Gas chromatography, with different detectors, is one of the most frequently used instruments in fire debris and accelerant analysis. Among other instruments, capillary electrophoresis and lase

Device-Independent Discrimination of Falsified Amoxicillin Capsules Using Heterogeneous Near-Infrared Spectroscopic Devices for Training and Testing of a Support Vector Machine.

The objective of this work is to demonstrate the potential of near-infrared spectroscopy for common screening of falsified medicines in the field by means of a device-independent universal discrimination approach. In order to provide a useful discrimination tool to protect people from low-quality medical products, not only is a low-cost and portable screening device necessary, but a reference library is also essential. The authors believe that a device-dependent reference library inhibits near-infrared spectroscopy from becoming a popular screening tool. In this study, to develop a device-inde

Neurologic monitoring on cardiopulmonary bypass: what are we obligated to do?

Improving survival from congenital cardiac repairs using cardiopulmonary bypass has appropriately shifted focus to neurologic outcomes. Hypoxic-ischemic mechanisms are the major cause of neurologic injury in neonatal cardiac surgery, and modifications of techniques of cardiopulmonary bypass can affect organ oxygen delivery and the propensity to injury both during and after surgery. Through successive refinements in the techniques of cardiopulmonary bypass, the risk factors for hypoxic-ischemic injury have been reduced, but not eliminated. The application of specific monitoring to enhance detec

The "Melting Butter Sign" of Coronary Plaque Delipidation: Insights From the YELLOW III Trial.

CASE SUMMARY: A 53-year-old man with chronic coronary disease and a nontarget, nonflow-limiting lipid-rich coronary plaque was serially assessed with near-infrared spectroscopy, optical coherence tomography, and intravascular ultrasound. After 26 weeks of evolocumab added to maximally tolerated statin therapy, near-infrared spectroscopy showed marked attenuation of confluent lipid signal ("Melting Butter Sign"), accompanied by fibrous cap thickening on optical coherence tomography, with unchanged plaque burden on intravascular ultrasound. TAKE-HOME MESSAGE: The "Melting Butter Sign" represent

Lanthanide-dye hybrid luminophores for advanced NIR-II bioimaging.

In vivo luminescence imaging in the second near-infrared window (NIR-II, 1000-2000 nm) is a potent technique for observing deep-tissue life activities, leveraging reduced light scattering, minimized autofluorescence, and moderate absorption attenuation to substantially enhance image contrast. Pushing the frontiers of NIR-II luminescence imaging forward, moving from static to dynamic event visualization, monochromatic to multicolor images, and fundamental research to clinical applications, necessitates the development of novel luminophores featuring bright emission, extendable wavelength, and o

Regional oximetry for diagnosing compartment syndrome: a scoping review.

PURPOSE: Diagnosis of compartment syndrome remains challenging, as intracompartmental pressure (ICP) monitoring measures mechanical pressure rather than tissue perfusion. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) enables non-invasive, continuous assessment of tissue oxygen saturation (StO2), potentially identifying ischemia earlier. However, its diagnostic accuracy remains uncertain. METHODS: Following PRISMA-ScR guidelines, PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, ClinicalTrials.gov, and WHO-ICTRP were searched to April 2025 for studies evaluating NIRS in acute (ACS) or chronic exertional (CECS) compartmen

Hyperspectral geographical origin identification of Bupleurum via spatial-spectral features based on adaptive weighted quaternion zernike moments.

Bupleurum, a vital herb in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), possesses complex chemical compositions heavily dependent on variety and geographical origin. Misidentification often leads to unstable therapeutic efficacy and safety risks. Addressing challenges in market confusion and traceability, this study proposes a rapid, non-destructive identification framework using visible-near infrared (Vis-NIR) hyperspectral imaging. A comprehensive dataset comprising 3670 samples from 17 batches, 7 origins, and 2 varieties was established, with hyperspectral images acquired separately from the cross-s

Prediction of Chronic Kidney Disease Based on Simulated Serum Analysis by Vibrational Spectroscopy.

The development of new technologies enabling rapid, frequent, and reagent-free monitoring of kidney function is recognized as being of paramount importance. In this work, mid-(MIR) and near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy were compared for the prediction of key renal biomarkers-creatinine, urea and albumin-using 54 serum solutions mimicking the biochemical profiles of five stages of chronic kidney disease (CKD). MIR spectra were acquired in a high-throughput microplate platform after a simple dehydration step, while the NIR spectra were obtained directly from liquid serum using a fiber optic probe

Unveiling the link: exploring muscle oxygen saturation in fibromyalgia and its implications for symptomatology and therapeutic strategies.

Fibromyalgia, characterized as a complex chronic pain syndrome, presents with symptoms of pervasive musculoskeletal pain, significant fatigue, and pronounced sensitivity at specific anatomical sites. Despite extensive research efforts, the origins of fibromyalgia remain enigmatic. This narrative review explores the intricate relationship between muscle oxygen saturation and fibromyalgia, positing that disruptions in the oxygenation processes within muscle tissues markedly influence the symptom profile of this disorder. Muscle oxygen saturation, crucial for muscle function, has been meticulousl

Asthma history influences gait performance and associated prefrontal cortex activation patterns in older adults.

Walking and cognition are interrelated due to dependence on shared brain regions that include the prefrontal cortex (PFC). Limited literature indicates that asthma is associated with poor mobility in older adults but the mechanisms underlying this relationship are unknown. Therefore, we tested the hypothesis that asthma history was associated with poor gait performance due to limited attention resources and neural inefficiency. Participants, older adults age ≥ 65 years reporting positive (n = 36) and negative (n = 36) history of asthma, walked under single and dual-task conditions with a funct
