Changes in sound pressure and fundamental frequency contours following changes in hearing status.

Sound-pressure level (SPL) and fundamental frequency (F0) contours were obtained from four postlingually deafened adults who received cochlear implants and from a subject with Neurofibromatosis-2 (NF2) who had her hearing severely reduced following surgery to remove an auditory-nerve tumor and to implant an auditory brainstem implant. SPL and F0 contours for each phrase in passages read before and after changes in hearing were averaged over repeated readings and then normalized with respect to the highest SPL or F0 value in the contour. The regularity of each average contour was measured by ca

The Effect of Pulse Shape and Interphase Gaps on Speech Perception and Perceived Sound Quality in Electrical Hearing.

BACKGROUND: Stimulation with triphasic pulses has been shown to reduce the occurrence of unwanted facial nerve stimulation (FNS) with cochle … es. Triphasic configuration showed lower overall subjective sound quality ratings than biphasic for speech intelligibility, clarity, naturalness, and overall preference, as well as for music naturalness, and overall preference in the acute setting without adaptation time. Post-hoc pairwise comparisons against the clinical map revealed significantly lower speech naturaln …

What does it take to stress a word? Digital manipulation of stress markers in ataxic dysarthria.

BACKGROUND: Stress production is important for effective communication, but this skill is frequently impaired in people with motor speech disorders. The literature reports successful treatment of these deficits in this population, thus highlighting the therapeutic potential of this area. However, no specific guidance is currently available to clinicians about whether any of the stress markers are more effective than others, to what degree they have to be manipulated, and whether strategies need to differ according to the underlying symptoms. AIMS: In order to provide detailed information on h

The importance of sound identification training in phonological intervention.

Little is known about the relevance of sound identification training in phonological intervention. Some treatment approaches incorporate sound identification training; others do not. The purpose of the present study was to compare articulatory improvement following treatment with and without sound identification training. Nine preschool children with severe phonological disorders were randomly assigned to 2 groups for the treatment of stimulable sound errors: (a) mixed training with concurrent production and sound identification training and (b) production-only training. Articulatory improveme

Educational Information Improves Listener Attitudes Toward People With Dysarthria Secondary to Parkinson's Disease.

PURPOSE: People with dysarthria have been rated as less confident and less likable and are often assumed by listeners to have reduced cognitive abilities relative to neurotypical speakers. This study explores whether educational information about dysarthria can shift these attitudes in a group of speakers with hypokinetic dysarthria secondary to Parkinson's disease. METHOD: One hundred seventeen listeners were recruited via Amazon Mechanical Turk to transcribe sentences and rate the confidence, intelligence, and likability of eight speakers with mild hypokinetic dysarthria. Listeners were ass

Speech Technology Progress Based on New Machine Learning Paradigm.

Speech technologies have been developed for decades as a typical signal processing area, while the last decade has brought a huge progress based on new machine learning paradigms. Owing not only to their intrinsic complexity but also to their relation with cognitive sciences, speech technologies are now viewed as a prime example of interdisciplinary knowledge area. This review article on speech signal analysis and processing, corresponding machine learning algorithms, and applied computational intelligence aims to give an insight into several fields, covering speech production and auditory per

Enhancement of electrolarynx speech based on auditory masking.

Electrolarynx (EL) speech provides a valuable means of verbal communication for the laryngectomees. Yet EL speech tends to be less intelligible speech due to the presence of background noise. This paper addresses the issue of EL speech enhancement. The proposed approach takes into account the frequency-domain masking properties of the human auditory system for a subtractive-type enhancement process. Subtractive-type algorithms can efficiently reduce the radiated noise of EL speech but not to reduce the additive noise from the environment due to the use of fixed subtraction parameters. Consider

CNN-Based Identification of Parkinson's Disease from Continuous Speech in Noisy Environments.

Parkinson's disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder caused by dopaminergic neuron degeneration. Parkinsonian speech impairment is one of the earliest presentations of the disease and, along with tremor, is suitable for pre-diagnosis. It is defined by hypokinetic dysarthria and accounts for respiratory, phonatory, articulatory, and prosodic manifestations. The topic of this article targets artificial-intelligence-based identification of Parkinson's disease from continuous speech recorded in a noisy environment. The novelty of this work is twofold. First, the proposed assessment work

A network approach to dyslexia: Mapping the reading network.

Research on the etiology of dyslexia typically uses an approach based on a single core deficit, failing to understand how variations in combinations of factors contribute to reading development and how this combination relates to intervention outcome. To fill this gap, this study explored links between 28 cognitive, environmental, and demographic variables related to dyslexia by employing a network analysis using a large clinical database of 1,257 elementary school children. We found two highly connected subparts in the network: one comprising reading fluency and accuracy measures, and one com

[Phoneme analysis and phoneme discrimination of juvenile speech therapy school students].

BACKGROUND: Phoneme analysis and phoneme discrimination, important factors in acquiring spoken and written language, have been evaluated in juvenile speech therapy school students. The results have been correlated with the results of a school achievement test. The following questions were of interest: Do students in the lower verbal skill segment show pathological phoneme analysis and phoneme discrimination skills? Do the results of the school achievement test differ from the results by students visiting German "Hauptschule"? How does phoneme analysis and phoneme discrimination performance cor

Noninvasive Speech Restoration After Total Laryngectomy Using Surface Electromyography: Pilot Study.

OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate the feasibility of restoring intelligible, own-voice speech after total laryngectomy using noninvasive surface electromyography. METHODS: One post-laryngectomy patient and one healthy reference speaker silently articulated a closed-vocabulary corpus of 499 dates and times while surface electromyographic (sEMG) signals were recorded from a 20-electrode face, jaw, and neck montage. A decoder mapped sEMG into speaker-independent speech tokens, which a public token-to-speech stack converted into audible speech; for the patient, the output was re-rendered in his own pre-s

Has Esophageal Speech Returned as an Increasingly Viable Postlaryngectomy Voice and Speech Rehabilitation Option?

PURPOSE: The literature on postlaryngectomy voice and speech rehabilitation is long-standing. Although multiple rehabilitation options have existed over the years, the acquisition and use of esophageal speech (ES) has decreased significantly over the past 40 years. This reduction coincides with the increased application of tracheoesophageal puncture (TEP) voice restoration. The literature suggests that voice acquisition failures observed secondary to TEP may represent a similar phenomenon that led to ES acquisition failures. METHOD: A comprehensive review of the literature on ES and TEP voice

Use of connected discourse tracking to train functional speech skills.

The connected discourse tracking procedure was adopted for use as a production training task for profoundly hearing-impaired children. A clinician served as the receiver and 5 children with profound hearing losses each served as the sender for 16 tracking sessions. There were individual differences among the children in their ability to convey the connected discourse to the clinician over time. The increase in comprehension of each subject's speech during the last session relative to the amount of information understood during the first session ranged from 0 to 48%. Two independent observers w
