Interprofessional education between speech pathology and nursing programs: A collaborative e-platform curriculum approach.

Interprofessional practice between nurses and speech-language pathologists (SLPs) in healthcare is essential, and it is a priority for both professions. Interprofessional education (IPE) is warranted to move forward professional partnership, and would be best served through incorporation into academic training for both disciplines. A combined synchronous and asynchronous e-platform collaborative approach that minimizes encroachment on already overcrowded clinical curricula is described. Implementation is outlined for use within a graduate-level dysphagia course for SLP students and a medical/s

The team approach in orofacial management.

Successful treatment of head and neck deformities by the plastic and maxillofacial surgeon often involves participation of the speech pathologist and orthodontist in planning therapy and helping the patient adapt to the surgery performed. Patients are presented demonstrating the communication in treatment planning and implementation recommended between surgeon, speech pathologist, and orthodontist. We describe the tools of examination used in the Division of Plastic and Maxillofacial Surgery at Duke University Medical Center.

Influence of Inhalation Injury on Incidence, Clinical Profile and Recovery Pattern of Dysphagia Following Burn Injury.

Inhalation injury is predictive of dysphagia post burns; however, the nature of dysphagia associated with inhalation burns is not well understood. This study describes the clinical profile and recovery pattern of swallowing following inhalation burn injury. All patients admitted 2008-2017 with confirmed inhalation burns on laryngoscopy and managed by speech-language pathology (SLP) were included. Initial dysphagia presentation and dysphagia recovery pattern were documented using the FOIS. Co-presence of dysphonia was determined clinically and rated present/absent. Persistent laryngeal/pharynge…

Cortical Foxp2 Supports Behavioral Flexibility and Developmental Dopamine D1 Receptor Expression.

Genetic studies have associated FOXP2 variation with speech and language disorders and other neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) involving pathology of the cortex. In this brain region, FoxP2 is expressed from development into adulthood, but little is known about its downstream molecular and behavioral functions. Here, we characterized cortex-specific Foxp2 conditional knockout mice and found a major deficit in reversal learning, a form of behavioral flexibility. In contrast, they showed normal activity levels, anxiety, and vocalizations, save for a slight decrease in neonatal call loudness. T

Issues in Identification and Assessment of Children with Autism and a Proposed Resource Toolkit for Speech-Language Pathologists.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has increased significantly in the last decade as have treatment choices. Nonetheless, the vastly diverse autism topic includes issues related to naming, description, iden-tification, assessment, and differentiation from other neu-rodevelopmental conditions. ASD issues directly impact speech-language pathologists (SLPs) who often see these children as the second contact, after pediatric medical practitioners. Because of shared symptomology, differentiation among neurodevelopmental disorders is crucial as it impacts treatment, educati

Estimating Palatal and Pharyngeal Muscle Contraction in Hindi Syllable Pronunciation using Computational Modeling.

Introduction  Speech, one of the main functions affected by cleft palate, involves a complex orchestra of sound deformation by various organs including the larynx, pharynx, epiglottis, palate, tongue, lip, and other structures complementing them. Although the effects of palatoplasty are traditionally evaluated subjectively, objective parameters have seldom been described to compare the pre- and postrepair functions. The study tries to extract the palatal and pharyngeal muscles while uttering various Hindi syllables and tries to find the percentage contraction of these structures as an objectiv

Autism at the beginning: microstructural and growth abnormalities underlying the cognitive and behavioral phenotype of autism.

Autistic symptoms begin in the first years of life, and recent magnetic resonance imaging studies have discovered brain growth abnormalities that precede and overlap with the onset of these symptoms. Recent postmortem studies of the autistic brain provide evidence of cellular abnormalities and processes that may underlie the recently discovered early brain overgrowth and arrest of growth that marks the first years of life in autism. Alternative origins and time tables for these cellular defects and processes are discussed. These cellular and growth abnormalities are most pronounced in frontal,
