A 4 year 9 month old boy and his 3 year 5 month old sister presented with delayed speech development, facial asymmetry, strabismus, and transverse ear lobe creases. The same features were found in their mother, but the father had no such anomalies. To our knowledge this familial association has not been described before and may represent an autosomal dominant syndrome.

Teprotumumab has been shown to be effective in reducing inflammation and proptosis in patients with thyroid eye disease. This study focused on the short and long-term effects of teprotumumab on diplopia and strabismus. Twenty patients were followed after receiving teprotumumab, on average, 2 years post-treatment, with a range of 1 to 5 years. Detailed sensorimotor exams including prism and alternate cover test were performed. All patients but one had a decrease in proptosis, ranging from 1 to 10 mm, with an average of 3.4 mm. Fifteen patients had diplopia in primary position pre-treatment. For…

RATIONALE: Botulinum toxin type A (BTXA) is an injectable neurotoxin widely used for the nonsurgical treatment of strabismus. However, its unintended diffusion into non-target extraocular muscles often causes complications such as ptosis and reduces its therapeutic duration. Therefore, suitable delivery platforms to improve both safety and efficacy of BTXA in strabismus treatment are urgently required.
METHODS: In this research, we co-assembled a pentapeptide hydrogelator Nap-Phe-Phe-Lys-Lys-Lys (NapFFKKK) with BTXA under mild physiological conditions to form a supramolecular hydrogel Gel Nap…

BACKGROUND: Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have higher rates of visual disorders, such as amblyopia and strabismus, but the impact of these disorders on autism symptoms is unknown. We assessed adaptive, social, and repetitive behaviors in children with ASD with and without binocular vision disorders (amblyopia and strabismus).
METHODS: Children aged 3-17 years were categorized into one of two groups: ASD with comorbid amblyopia or strabismus (ASD+/BVD+) or ASD without a visual disorder (ASD+/BVD-). All participants underwent a complete ophthalmologic examination to inform group …

Thyroid eye disease (TED) can cause incomitant strabismus with muscle restriction, resulting in diplopia and patient discomfort and discontent. Surgical correction of TED-associated restrictive strabismus has been attempted, with fixed and adjustable suture success rates varying from 38% to 82%. This paper reviews five articles that explored the utility of the intraoperative relaxed muscle positioning (IRMP) technique in patients with restrictive strabismus due to TED. While IRMP is a useful technique for addressing TED-related strabismus and is effective in patients with incomitant strabismus…

Fixational eye movements are important for holding the central visual field on a target for a specific period of time. In this study, we aimed to quantitatively assess fixational disparities using binocular eye tracking in children with strabismus (before and after surgical alignment) and healthy children. Fixational disparities in 117 children (4-18 years; 57 with strabismus and 60 age-similar healthy controls) were recorded under binocular viewing with corrected refractive errors. Disparities in gaze positions relative to the target location were recorded for both eyes. The main outcome meas…

Introduction Mini-plication is a relatively novel, minimally invasive surgical approach for the management of small-angle strabismus for small-angle residual strabismus. By creating a controlled fold of the extraocular muscle without detachment or excision, this technique preserves vascular supply and muscle integrity, allowing precise correction of minor deviations with reduced risk of complications compared to traditional procedures. Its technical simplicity and reversibility render it a promising option for patients requiring subtle ocular realignment. This study aims to evaluate the effica…

Strabismus, or eye misalignment, is a common condition with significant functional and psychosocial consequences. Conventional strabismus surgery typically employs absorbable sutures for conjunctival closure; however, this approach may prolong operative time and contribute to postoperative irritation and inflammation. This systematic review synthesised evidence comparing traditional suturing with alternative sutureless techniques, including fibrin glue and minimally invasive approaches, to determine their impact on surgical efficiency, patient comfort, and safety. Following the Preferred Repor…

Homonymous and heteronymous hemianopias associated with strabismus are a therapeutic challenge because surgery may result in diplopia, decrease the visual field (VF), and/or lead to recurrence of the deviation. We present four cases: two homonymous hemianopias and two heteronymous hemianopias. Of the four patients, three had exotropia and one had esotropia. The origin of hemianopias was neoplastic in two cases and traumatic in two cases. Strabismus surgery was performed in three cases, but only one case had a good result; recurrence of the deviation and diplopia occurred in the other two cases…
