Examination of retinal vascular trajectory in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

AIM: Evidence suggests microvascular dysfunction (wider retinal venules and narrower arterioles) in schizophrenia (SCZ) and bipolar disorder (BD). The vascular development is synchronous with neuronal development in the retina and brain. The retinal vessel trajectory is related to retinal nerve fiber layer thinning and cerebrovascular abnormalities in SCZ and BD and has not yet been examined. Hence, in this study we examined the retinal vascular trajectory in SCZ and BD in comparison with healthy volunteers (HV). METHODS: Retinal images were acquired from 100 HV, SCZ patients, and BD patients

Promoting Reproducible Research for Characterizing Nonmedical Use of Medications Through Data Annotation: Description of a Twitter Corpus and Guidelines.

BACKGROUND: Social media data are being increasingly used for population-level health research because it provides near real-time access to large volumes of consumer-generated data. Recently, a number of studies have explored the possibility of using social media data, such as from Twitter, for monitoring prescription medication abuse. However, there is a paucity of annotated data or guidelines for data characterization that discuss how information related to abuse-prone medications is presented on Twitter. OBJECTIVE: This study discusses the creation of an annotated corpus suitable for train

Artificial intelligence in allergen immunotherapy: toward a proactive and personalized management of allergic diseases.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The management of immunoglobulin E (IgE)-mediated allergic diseases and allergen immunotherapy (AIT) is complicated by high interindividual variability and the unavailability of reliable predictive biomarkers. Given the complexity of the immune response underlying these processes, integrating artificial intelligence (AI) could revolutionize the clinical management of these patients. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent literature highlights how machine learning (ML) can efficiently stratify patients by analyzing omics data and molecular sensitization profiles. Models such as long-term m

A machine learning-based classification model to support university students with dyslexia with personalized tools and strategies.

Dyslexia is a specific learning disorder that causes issues related to reading, which affects around 10% of the worldwide population. This can compromise comprehension and memorization skills, and result in anxiety and lack of self-esteem, if no support is provided. Moreover, this support should be highly personalized, to be actually helpful. In this paper, a model to classify the most useful methodologies to support students with dyslexia has been created, with a focus on university alumni. The prediction algorithm is based on supervised machine learning techniques; starting from the issues t…

Physiological Data Analysis Framework for Pain Prediction in Physical Rehabilitation.

Predicting pain in physical rehabilitation is challenging due to subjectivity, patient variability, and self-report bias, especially in telerehabilitation. This study aims to determine whether machine-learning models based on heart rate (HR), heart rate variability (HRV), and peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2) can reliably detect clinically meaningful pain during real rehabilitation sessions, including home-based settings where self-report is least reliable; we hypothesized that these low-cost, non-invasive markers carry sufficient information to flag low-to-moderate pain episodes without rel
