PECULIARITIES OF USING A NEUROVASCULARIZED FLAP ON THE SURAL ARTERY IN PLASTIC SURGERY OF GUNSHOT DEFECTS ON THE FOOT AND LOWER LEG.

The results of treatment of 36 patients with extensive gunshot defects on the foot and lower leg with the use of a neurovascularized flap on the sural artery have been analyzed. Goal - to investigate the effect of catheterization of the small saphenous vein, which is included in the flap, on the frequency of development of its ischemic complications. The 1st group (n=14) included the wounded, who underwent complex treatment of an extensive gunshot defect followed by its plasticity with a "sural flap" with temporary catheterization of the small subcutaneous vein included in its composition. The

Stage-by-stage treatment of vesicovaginal fistula followed by orthotopic plastic surgery of the bladder and vagina with a small intestine.

High incidence of iatrogenic lesions of genitourinary system (during gynecological and oncogynecological operations) followed by urogenital fistulae and great percentage of recurrences after reconstructive surgery justify the need to improve surgical reconstruction of genitourinary organs and urine discharge in these patients. Stage-by-stage surgical treatment of a patient with extensive vesicovaginal fistula is reported in the article. A defect was associated with loss of 2/3 of the volume of tissues of adjacent organs. Multiple operations in various clinics were failed to eliminate the fistu

[The application of multichannel electrostimulation and nivalin electrophoresis for the rehabilitative treatment of the patient following plastic surgery in the facial region].

This paper describes for the first time the combined treatment of the patients who underwent plastic surgery for the correction of cosmetic defects in the form of grade II and III senile atrophy of the skin in conjunction with complicated neuropathies of the facial nerve. The essence of the proposed combined treatment consists in using lymphatic drainage massage, medicinal electrophoresis of a nivalin solution, multichannel electrostimulation, and microcurrent therapy with bipolar pulsed currents. The method made it possible to significantly improve the properties of the skin in the facial reg

The Added Value of Plastic Surgery in the Multidisciplinary Management of Sarcoma Resection: A Multivariable Analysis of Predictors and Postoperative Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Sarcomas are rare and heterogeneous malignancies arising from mesenchymal tissue, often requiring wide surgical resection that may result in large and complex soft and bony tissue defects needing complex reconstruction. Growing evidence indicates the added value of plastic surgery participation in multidisciplinary sarcoma care, yet evidence remains limited. METHODS: This retrospective single-center study included patients who underwent resection for soft-tissue or bone sarcoma at Ghent University Hospital between 2010 and 2022. The patients were categorized according to closure s

Early recovery of cognition and brain plasticity after surgery in children with low-grade frontal lobe tumors.

BACKGROUND: Low-grade frontal lobe tumors (LGFLT) can be cured through total resection, but surgical trauma could impair higher-order cognitive function. We aim to characterize the short-term natural cognitive recovery and brain plasticity in surgically-treated pediatric patients with LGFLT. METHODS: Ten pediatric patients with LGFLT were enrolled. Their cognitive function was assessed before the surgery (S0), in the first month post-surgery (S1), and 3-6 months post-surgery (S2), using the CNS Vital Signs battery. DTI and rs-fMRI were performed during the same time periods. Changes of cognit

Evaluation and management of "functional" nasolacrimal blockage: results of a survey of the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive surgery.

A survey was mailed to members of The American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ASOPRS) concerning the diagnosis and management of patients with epiphora. Specifically, the respondent was asked about his or her work-up and management of an older patient with epiphora whose nasolacrimal system was patent on irrigation. Some pertinent findings were that 48 respondents did not choose the Jones test as one of the diagnostic procedures they employ. A small percentage of respondents do only a Jones test in their evaluation and believe that a dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) is in

Prevention and management of positional skull deformities in infants. American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Practice and Ambulatory Medicine, Section on Plastic Surgery and Section on Neurological Surgery.

Cranial asymmetry may be present at birth or may develop during the first few months of life. Over the past several years, pediatricians have seen an increase in the number of children with cranial asymmetry, particularly unilateral flattening of the occiput. This increase likely is attributable to parents following the American Academy of Pediatrics "Back to Sleep" positioning recommendations aimed at decreasing the risk of sudden infant death syndrome. Although associated with some risk of deformational plagiocephaly, healthy young infants should be placed down for sleep on their backs. This

Methodological quality and performance of artificial intelligence and machine learning models for preoperative risk prediction in plastic surgery: A systematic review.

Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) are increasingly being applied to preoperative risk prediction in plastic surgery; however, the methodological quality and clinical readiness of these models are yet to be systematically evaluated. This systematic review assessed the quality, risk of bias, and predictive performance of AI/ML preoperative risk prediction models in plastic surgery using the PROBAST+AI framework. Five databases were searched from inception through October 2025. Ten studies met the inclusion criteria, encompassing autologous breast reconstruction (n = 2), allo

Thromboprophylaxis in Intermediate and Major Plastic Surgery Procedures: A Narrative Review and Proposal of the TROMBO-PLAST Integrated Decision-Making Model.

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a leading cause of preventable perioperative morbidity and mortality in plastic surgery. However, its prevention demonstrates considerable variation in clinical practice, ranging from under-prophylaxis driven by concerns about hematoma formation to routine over-prophylaxis based solely on numerical risk scores. This narrative review critically examines the available tools for thrombotic and bleeding risk stratification in intermediate and major plastic surgery procedures and proposes an integrated decision-making model tailored to the specialty. Artificial Intelligence for Automated Current Procedural Terminology Coding in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Using a Fine-tuned Hybrid Large Language Model.

BACKGROUND: Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) coding in plastic and reconstructive surgery is complex, time-intensive, and prone to error, particularly for procedures involving multiple CPT codes. Recent studies suggest that out-of-the-box large language models (LLMs) demonstrate inconsistent performance for surgical CPT coding. METHODS: A retrospective comparative study evaluated CPT code set accuracy across baseline LLMs (OpenAI, Gemini, Anthropic), external professional auditors, and a fine-tuned hybrid LLM system (ProCode), using expert consensus coding as the reference standard. Five-year Analysis of Hand Infections in Plastic Surgery: Clinical Patterns and Risk Factors in a Referral Center from Latin America.

BACKGROUND: Hand infections carry a significant clinical and socioeconomic burden due to the hand's complex anatomy and its essential role in daily activities. Despite advances in diagnostics and therapy, unfavorable outcomes remain common, particularly in low- and middle-income settings where standardized protocols are scarce. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective observational study of 162 patients treated for hand infections between 2017 and 2023 at a secondary-level referral center in Latin America. Demographic, clinical, microbiological, and surgical variables were analyzed. Recurrence o

Impact of GLP-1 Agonist on Surgical Wound Complications after Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery: A Propensity-Matched Cohort Large Database Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) have gained Food and Drug Administration approval for management of type 2 diabetes. However, they have been increasingly used for their weight loss side effect profile. Surgical site wound complications have been observed in patients using these medications (although with a low incidence rate). Given the paucity of literature on weight loss medications and their implications in plastic surgery, this study evaluates the impact of weight loss medication use on postoperative surgical site outcomes in patients undergoing common pla
