PSEUDORABIES (AUJESZKY'S DISEASE) IS AN UNDERDIAGNOSED CAUSE OF DEATH IN THE FLORIDA PANTHER (PUMA CONCOLOR CORYI).

Feral swine (Sus scrofa), an important prey species for the endangered Florida panther (Puma concolor coryi), is the natural host for pseudorabies virus (PRV). Prior to this study, PRV had been detected in just three panthers. To determine the effect of PRV on the panther population, we prospectively necropsied 199 panthers and retrospectively reviewed necropsy and laboratory findings, reexamined histology, and tested archived tissues using real-time PCR from 46 undiagnosed panther mortalities. Seven additional infections (two prospective, five retrospective) were detected for a total of 10 co…

Salmonella seroprevalence in wild boar from Southeast Spain depends on host population density.

Salmonellosis is the second most prevalent zoonosis in Europe and it has considerable economic and health implications for its monitoring and control as well as being among the most prevalent pathogens on livestock farms. The wild boar (Sus scrofa) has been identified as a competent host and spreader of Salmonella spp. There has been a significant increase in wild boar population in Europe in recent decades, and it is even present in urban areas. This study evaluates the spatial distribution of the seroprevalence of Salmonella spp. in wild boar from Murcia (Southeast Spain) and its relationshi…

Androgens and estradiol-17beta production by porcine uterine cells: In vitro study.

Porcine (Sus scrofa domestica) uterine slices harvested during both early pregnancy and luteolysis produce steroid hormones. The aim of the present study was to determine (1) which porcine separated uterine cells secrete androgens: androstenedione (A(4)) and testosterone (T), and estradiol-17beta (E(2)) in culture; (2) if the production of A(4), T and E(2) in the uterine cells is regulated by P4 and OT; (3) if uterine tissues expressed cytochrome P450arom gene (CYP19). Uteri were collected on Days 14 to 16 of early pregnancy and the estrous cycle. Enzymatically separated epithelial cells, stro…

Control of development of gastrointestinal system in neonates.

Our recent studies of structure and function of gastrointestinal tract mucosa revealed that the domestification of Sus scrofa corresponds with the significant slowing of the organ development. On top of genetic potential, the nutritional factors (or more precisely - lack of certain biologically active substances in the feed of pregnant sows) are responsible. Moreover, feeding neonates with milk replacers instead of mother's milk further slows down the development. This is manifested by reduced mitotic activity in the crypts and enhanced apoptosis of enterocytes. The negative effects consist of…

Expanding the pig metabolomics QTL catalog.

BACKGROUND: Understanding the genetic regulation of metabolism is essential for improving animal health and productivity and for strengthening the use of pigs as translational models for human metabolic diseases. Metabolomics, when integrated with genomic data, provides a powerful framework for identifying genetic factors that influence intermediate molecular phenotypes closely linked to physiology. While large-scale metabolomics genome‑wide association studies (GWAS) have been extensively performed in humans, comparable studies in pigs remain limited. Among omics disciplines, metabolomics, th

First isolation of a novel tottorivirus from wild boar faeces in Japan.

Viruses of the genus Tottorivirus (family Picornaviridae) have been identified in pigs but no isolates have been reported to date. In this study, a novel tottorivirus strain, designated Tottori/tc/Wild Boar/Japan/Ishi-6/2020 (Ishi-6), was isolated for the first time from a faecal sample of a wild boar using swine testis cells, where cytopathic effects (CPEs) were observed. Ultrathin-section transmission electron microscopy revealed virus-like structures arranged around vesicular membranes in infected cells. The Ishi-6 replicated in Porcine Kidney-15 and Cloned Porcine Kidney cells with CPEs bu

Fluid flow and feeding performance in infant mammals: evaluating the impact of nipple design.

Infant mammals must suckle in order to acquire food. Many factors, including the design of a nipple, impact suckling, and thus can alter feeding performance. For example, feeding on a bottle nipple that has ducts embedded in silicone requires infants to generate suction to acquire milk, whereas a hollow bottle nipple allows infants to express milk via nipple compression. Furthermore, the design of a nipple impacts milk flow, and likely changes the relationships between suction generation, tongue kinematics and milk flow. In this experiment, we designed two ducted bottle nipples with similar pr

Integrating eQTL and genome-wide association studies to uncover additive and dominant regulatory circuits in pig uterine capacity.

Uterine capacity is critical to the economic value of pigs. Exploring the genetic mechanisms that underlie uterine capacity can provide vital insights for pig breeding programmes. Here, we used a mixed model including additive and dominance effects to conduct genome-wide association analysis followed by cross-population meta-analyses for uterine capacity in 8 782 pigs from three pig breeds across nine populations. We identified 192 lead single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) with additive-specific effects, 236 lead SNPs with dominant-specific effects, and 27 lead SNPs with additive-dominant sh

Estimating waning immunity against classical swine fever virus among adult wild boar: A case study in Japan.

Bait vaccination against classical swine fever virus (CSFV) among wild boar in Japan started in 2019 and has continued so far. While the proportion of immune individuals increased in the early phase of the CSFV epidemic, this proportion tended to decrease in some regions, even after the subsequent vaccination. Turnover of wild boar populations can reduce the proportion of immune individuals; however, the decrease was also observed among adult wild boar during the season when the influence of turnover was negligible. Waning immunity is hypothesized as an alternative mechanism. This study aimed

Viral Distribution of Wild Boar Exposed to Low (Vaccine Candidate) and High Virulence African Swine Fever Virus Isolates: Immunohistochemical Characterization.

Although several biosecurity and control measures are currently in place to mitigate the African swine fever (ASF) epidemic, vaccination is being explored as a potential long-term strategy. However, standardized guidelines for evaluating the safety and efficacy of ASF vaccines are not yet fully established. Understanding infection dynamics in wild boar is crucial, as they play a key role in the spread and persistence of the virus. This work aims to provide comprehensive information on viral distribution through immunohistochemical analysis (p72) with histopathologic assessment in wild boar. Th

Hepatitis E Virus and Toxoplasma Gondii in Wild Boars from Southern Kyushu, Japan.

This study investigated the seroprevalence of zoonotic hepatitis E virus and Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) in wild boars from southern Kyushu, Japan, from 2014 to 2021, including increased hunting until 2015. The seroprevalence was 16.38% for hepatitis E virus (n = 116; 95% CI 10.74-24.17) and 12.40% for T. gondii (n = 130; 95% CI 7.78-19.20). A decreasing trend for hepatitis E virus was observed (P = 0.05777). As the first study on wild boars in southern Kyushu, it provides insights into hepatitis E virus and T. gondii epidemiology, suggesting that managing boar density could help control dis
