Reflexive attentional orienting in migraineurs: The behavioral implications of hyperexcitable visual cortex.

INTRODUCTION: Although migraine is classified as a headache disorder, a key part of migraine pathophysiology is a heightened excitability of visual cortices in between headache events. The goal of our study was to examine the behavioral impact of this visuocortical hyperexcitability, in terms of its effect on reflexive visual attentional orienting. METHODS AND RESULTS: In Experiment 1, using a non-predictive spatial cuing task that relied on sensory-evoked responses in the visual cortex for triggering attentional orienting, we found that migraineurs had greater attentional enhancement of manu

Audiovisual speech integration in autism spectrum disorders: ERP evidence for atypicalities in lexical-semantic processing.

In typically developing (TD) individuals, behavioral and event-related potential (ERP) studies suggest that audiovisual (AV) integration enables faster and more efficient processing of speech. However, little is known about AV speech processing in individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). This study examined ERP responses to spoken words to elucidate the effects of visual speech (the lip movements accompanying a spoken word) on the range of auditory speech processing stages from sound onset detection to semantic integration. The study also included an AV condition, which paired spoken

Sensorimotor performance after high-definition transcranial direct current stimulation over the primary somatosensory or motor cortices in men versus women.

The primary somatosensory (S1) cortex is a central structure in motor performance. However, transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) research aimed at improving motor performance usually targets the primary motor cortex (M1). Recently, sex was found to mediate tDCS response. Thus, we investigated whether tDCS with an anodal electrode placed over S1 improves motor performance and sensation perception in men versus women. Forty-five participants randomly received 15-min high-definition tDCS (HD-tDCS) at 1 mA to S1, M1, or sham stimulation. Reaching performance was tested before and immedia

Positive change with Ménière's disease.

OBJECTIVE: The aims of this study were twofold: to determine in what way people with a non-fatal chronic illness experience positive change after the onset of their illness, and to determine whether comparing with other people with Ménière's disease influenced perceiving this change. DESIGN: Using a longitudinal method, questionnaires were administered at baseline and at ten-month follow-up. METHOD: At both time points 301 people with Ménière's disease completed the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory and at baseline they also completed questionnaires measuring, demographic variables, disease sev

Return to driving after carpal tunnel syndrome surgery.

BACKGROUND: Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) surgery is one of the most frequent procedures performed in hand surgery and has long been shown to be effective. However, there are still no recommendations concerning the return to driving after the operation. The aim of this study was to determine the average time to return to driving after CTS surgery, and to identify the factors influencing this time. HYPOTHESIS: Providing appropriate information on this issue could help to anticipate patients' post-operative needs, facilitating the post-operative process. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients who under

A longitudinal examination of contributors to new parents' perception of their infant.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have examined contributors to personal growth (PG) following the birth of the first child. This study examines for the first time the role of PG as a potential mediator in the relationship between individual characteristics (bond with parents and experiences of parental loss) and parental perception of their infant (warmth, invasiveness). By focusing on PG, this study offers a novel perspective on how parental experiences and relationships influence early parent-child dynamics over time. METHODS: We used data from a longitudinal study among new Israeli parents. Pa

Learning vision-driven reactive soccer skills for humanoid robots.

Humanoid soccer poses a representative challenge for embodied intelligence, requiring robots to coordinate agile locomotion with unreliable visual perception in dynamic environments. However, existing systems typically rely on modular pipelines that separate perception from control or assume ideal sensing, making it difficult to achieve coherent and reactive behavior under real-world perceptual limitations. In this work, we present a unified reinforcement learning-based controller that enables humanoid robots to learn vision-driven reactive soccer skills by directly coupling visual perception

Factors Associated With Pain Related to Insertion of a Contraceptive Intrauterine Device: Findings of a National Survey.

BACKGROUND: A prominent barrier to broader intrauterine device (IUD) uptake is the fear of pain and discomfort associated with insertion of the device. AIM: To examine the pain level perceived during IUD insertion and identify factors associated with perceived pain during the insertion procedure. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a secondary analysis of nationally representative survey data from Australian women using IUDs. We explored self-reported pain perception during IUD insertion retrospectively. We asked women about pregnancy history, mental health and their perceived knowledge abou

Impact of music on pain perception during office-based transperineal prostate biopsy: a prospective non-randomized study.

Although music has been shown to alleviate pain and anxiety during transrectal PBx, limited evidence is available regarding its impact in the transperineal (TP) setting. This study aimed to investigate the effect of music on pain perception during office-based TP PBx. This prospective, comparative, non-randomized study enrolled biopsy-naïve patients undergoing TP PBx between March 2024 and March 2025. A total of 200 patients were equally assigned to the intervention group (listening to music during PBx) or the control group. Pain was assessed using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) at six predefin

Aging is associated with sex-specific alteration in the expression of genes encoding for neuroestradiol synthesis and signaling proteins in the mouse trigeminal somatosensory input.

Pain perception is influenced by sex and aging, with previous studies indicating the involvement of aromatase, the estradiol synthase enzyme, in regulating pain perception. Previous research has established the presence of aromatase in dorsal root ganglia sensory neurons and its role in modulating pain perception. The present study aims to explore the implications of aging and sex on the expression of aromatase and estrogen receptors in the trigeminal ganglion. The study examined mRNA levels of aromatase, ERs, and the androgen receptor (AR) in the trigeminal ganglion of 3-month-old and 27-mont

Seen by a Glance, But Not by a Stare-A Case Study of a Patient With Simultanagnosia.

OBJECTIVE: Simultanagnosia is a rare neuropsychological symptom characterized by difficulty recognizing global structures while preserving perception of local detail. The condition is classified into ventral and dorsal types. Clinical presentation of ventral simultanagnosia includes a reduced ability to recognize multiple visual stimuli rapidly, that is, part-by-part recognition. Here, we report a case of ventral simultanagnosia with a unique presentation; when short-duration visual stimuli were presented, the patient could perform global recognition by improving his part-by-part approach. Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy Risk Perception in Patients Considering Natalizumab for Multiple Sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) remains a concern when considering natalizumab for multiple sclerosis (MS) treatment. Extensive research has identified factors that increase PML risk, and it is important that providers and patients accurately understand risk to make appropriate benefit-risk decisions. METHODS: One hundred adult US patient-candidates for natalizumab therapy were questioned about their PML risk perception, the maximum PML risk they deemed acceptable, and sources of information used to understand risk. Differences in group distributions were compared

Interhemispheric control of sensory cue integration and self-motion perception.

Spatial orientation necessitates the integration of visual and vestibular sensory cues, in-turn facilitating self-motion perception. However, the neural mechanisms underpinning sensory integration remain unknown. Recently we have illustrated that spatial orientation and vestibular thresholds are influenced by interhemispheric asymmetries associated with the posterior parietal cortices (PPC) that predominantly house the vestibulo-cortical network. Given that sensory integration is a prerequisite to both spatial orientation and motion perception, we hypothesized that sensory integration is simil

Appearance of fetal pain could be associated with maturation of the mesodiencephalic structures.

Fetal pain remains a controversial subject both in terms of recognizing its existence and the time-frame within which it appears. This article investigates the hypothesis that pain perception during development is not related to any determined structures of the central nervous system (CNS), on the contrary, the process of perception could be made with any structure satisfying conditions that the perception of pain is the organization, identification, and interpretation of sensory information in order to represent and understand the environment. According to this definition, chronic decerebrate
