Repeatability of binarization thresholding methods for optical coherence tomography angiography image quantification.

Binarization is a critical step in analysis of retinal optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) images, but the repeatability of metrics produced from various binarization methods has not been fully assessed. This study set out to examine the repeatability of OCTA quantification metrics produced using different binarization thresholding methods, all of which have been applied in previous studies, across multiple devices and plexuses. Successive 3 × 3 mm foveal OCTA images of 13 healthy eyes were obtained on three different devices. For each image, contrast adjustments, 3 image processin

Optical coherence tomography-based deep-learning model for detecting central serous chorioretinopathy.

Central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC) is a common condition characterized by serous detachment of the neurosensory retina at the posterior pole. We built a deep learning system model to diagnose CSC, and distinguish chronic from acute CSC using spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) images. Data from SD-OCT images of patients with CSC and a control group were analyzed with a convolutional neural network. Sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) were used to evaluate the model. For CSC diagnosis, our model showed an a

Fluid surface tension evaluation using capillary wave measurement with optical coherence tomography.

The surface tension of biological fluids is an important parameter because the mechanical properties of fluids are closely linked with hematological diseases and other pathophysiologies. Capillary waves are associated with fluid mechanical properties. Here, we propose a method that utilizes the acoustic radiation force (ARF) to generate propagating waves and optical coherence tomography (OCT) to measure the wave motion. This ARF-OCT method is capable of evaluating the surface tension of fluids, water and porcine whole blood in this study, based on the dispersion relation of capillary waves. Tw

Analysis of sweating by optical coherence tomography in patients with palmoplantar hyperhidrosis.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a high-resolution tomographic imaging technique that uses optical interference. OCT has enabled the non-invasive three-dimensional analysis of individual acrosyringia in the stratum corneum in human skin. However, no report on the measurement of sweating by OCT using clinical data from humans has been published to date. Twenty patients with hyperhidrosis and twenty healthy subjects were included in this study. Imaging of acrosyringia in the stratum corneum using OCT and measurement of the sweat rate using the ventilated capsule method were performed simult

Macular optical coherence tomography findings after vitreoretinal surgery for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment.

The primary aim of this study was to summarize and illustrate the main structural cross-sectional optical coherence tomography findings encountered after vitreoretinal surgery for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment. This was a non-systematic review of literature on structural cross-sectional optical coherence tomography findings after vitreoretinal surgery for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment. Adequate illustrations of the main findings described were found after a retrospective analysis of imaging and charts of patients operated at the department where this study was performed. The main struc

Assessing Ganglion Cell Layer Topography in Human Albinism Using Optical Coherence Tomography.

PURPOSE: To test whether ganglion cell layer (GCL) and inner plexiform layer (IPL) topography is altered in albinism. METHODS: Optical coherence tomography scans were analyzed in 30 participants with albinism and 25 control participants. Horizontal and vertical line scans were acquired at the fovea, then strip registered and averaged. The Duke Optical Coherence Tomography Retinal Analysis Program was used to automatically segment the combined GCL and IPL and total retinal thickness, followed by program-assisted manual segmentation of the boundary between the GCL and IPL. Layer thickness and a

Optical coherence tomography for the investigation of skin adaptation to mechanical stress.

BACKGROUND: Skin breakdown due to limb-socket interface stress is a significant problem for lower limb prosthesis users. While it is known that skin can adapt to stress to become more resistant to breakdown, little is understood about skin adaptation and few methods exist to noninvasively investigate it. In this study, we present novel, noninvasive imaging methods using Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) to assess key features of the cutaneous microvasculature that may be involved in skin adaptation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eight able-bodied participants wore a modified below-knee prosthetic s

Optical coherence tomography angiography characteristics in Waldenström macroglobulinemia retinopathy: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Waldenström macroglobulinemia (WM) is a distinct clinicopathologic entity characterized by the infiltration of the bone marrow by clonal lymphoplasmacytic cells that produce monoclonal immunoglobulin M (IgM) in the blood, and patients may present with symptoms related to the infiltration of the hematopoietic tissues or the effects of monoclonal IgM in the blood. Funduscopic abnormalities were noted in some of the patients due to hyperviscosity or other retinal lesions. Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) as a non-invasive imaging tool can give qualitative and quantitati

VASCULAR ALTERATIONS REVEALED WITH OPTICAL COHERENCE TOMOGRAPHY ANGIOGRAPHY IN PATIENTS WITH CHOROIDEREMIA.

PURPOSE: Choroideremia is a rare degenerative retinal disease that causes incurable blindness. It occurs as a result of the deficiency of the X-linked CHM gene, which encodes the Rab escort protein 1 (REP1). Gene therapy has been developed to treat CHM using adeno-associated viral vectors and is currently undergoing clinical trials. Expression of the CHM gene is ubiquitous throughout the retina, and it is therefore important to identify which retinal layers are affected in the disease process. The purpose of this study was to assess in particular the choriocapillaris using optical coherence to

Advances in Optical Coherence Tomography and Confocal Laser Endomicroscopy in Pulmonary Diseases.

Diagnosing and monitoring pulmonary diseases is highly dependent on imaging, physiological function tests and tissue sampling. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) and confocal laser endomicroscopy (CLE) are novel imaging techniques with near-microscopic resolution that can be easily and safely combined with conventional bronchoscopy. Disease-related pulmonary anatomical compartments can be visualized, real time, using these techniques. In obstructive lung diseases, airway wall layers and related structural remodelling can be identified and quantified. In malignant lung disease, normal and malig
