BACKGROUND: Periodontitis is the most common type of periodontal condition, primarily affecting middle-aged people and resulting in tooth loss; when combined with diabetes, it becomes a debilitating condition. The aim of this study is to compare the residual periodontal ligament length in periodontitis patients with and without diabetes.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The cross-sectional observational study was conducted in the department of periodontics over 5 months. The patients in the study were divided into two groups. Group 1 comprised patients with periodontitis without type 2 diabetes and Gro

Bisphosphonates are widely used for treatment or prevention of bone diseases characterized by high osteoclastic activity. Among the oral medicines used to treat osteoporosis, alendronate has been often used. Despite of the low rate of complications on its use, cases of osteonecrosis of the jaw have been reported on literature after tooth extractions. The main symptoms include pain, tooth mobility, swelling, erythema, and ulceration. The risk factors related to osteonecrosis of the jaw associated with bisphosphonate are exposition time to the medicine, routes of administration, and oral surgica

INTRODUCTION: Oral health, though linked with overall health and well-being, is often neglected in low- and middle-income countries such as India. Tooth loss, primarily caused by dental caries and periodontal disease, has been associated with malnutrition, obesity, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and even mortality. Despite the increasing burden of multiple long-term conditions (MLTCs), limited research in India has explored the association between tooth loss and MLTCs. The study aimed to estimate the prevalence of complete tooth loss and assessed its association with MLTCs using nationally

BACKGROUND: One of the most common causes of bacterial odontogenic sinusitis (ODS) is endodontic disease with periapical lesions (PAL). Referrals between otolaryngologists and dental specialists are indispensable for proper diagnosis and treatment. If the disease does not resolve after medical and root-canal treatment (RCT), tooth extraction, endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) or both are the ways of management. The aim was to clarify the predictive value of disease's radiological characteristics for the further surgical intervention.
METHODOLOGY: 68 symptomatic patients evaluated by an otolaryngo

A successful case of homologous tooth transplantation is presented. A maxillary second premolar obtained from a tooth bank was implanted into a fresh central incisor extraction site. A 3-yr follow-up radiograph indicated satisfactory apical healing and minimal replacement resorption. Clinically, the transplantation site was free of symptoms and there was no evidence of periodontal disease or tooth mobility.

BACKGROUND: Depression and tooth loss are associated with the occurrence of systemic disease or the progression of multi-factorial disease, and both are considered important public health issues by World Health Organization (WHO). Previous research just suggested that tooth loss can generate psychological stress, low self-esteem, anxiety and other emotional disturbances. However, the precise correlation and underlying mechanisms between depression and tooth loss remains poorly understood. Consequently, we aim to explore the association between depression and tooth loss through a cross-section

A great number of patients around the world experience tooth loss that is attributed to irretrievable damage of the periodontium caused by deep caries, severe periodontal diseases or irreversible trauma. The periodontium is a complex tissue composed mainly of two soft tissues and two hard tissues; the former includes the periodontal ligament (PDL) tissue and gingival tissue, and the latter includes alveolar bone and cementum covering the tooth root. Tissue engineering techniques are therefore required for regeneration of these tissues. In particular, PDL is a dynamic connective tissue that is

Junctophilins (JPs) emerge to play key role in human pathophysiology. This family includes four subtypes (JP1-4), which are differentially detected in excitable cells. Previous work demonstrated the knockout of JPs that seriously damage physiological functions in skeletal muscle, cardiac, and neurons. Here, we summarize latest papers on the essential function of JPs in some Ca2+ -related diseases and neurological diseases, such as primary muscle disease, cardiomyopathies, Type 2 diabetes, gastrointestinal cancer, Huntington's disease-like 2, and Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease. Growing evidence su

Oral diseases, most notably tooth decay, represent a significant challenge to public health. They can result in the deterioration of tooth structures and properties that require dental restoration. The objective of conservative dentistry is to remove and replace only the damaged parts. The faithful replication of a natural tooth may prevent additional damage to surrounding tissues and ensure successful restoration. The objective of this review was to establish a connection between the structural organization of teeth at various scales and the resulting properties, with a particular emphasis on

Periodontitis, being a multifactorial disorder is found to be the most common oral disease denoted by the inflammation of gingiva and resorption of tooth supporting alveolar bone. The disease being closely linked with fast life style and determined by unhygienic behavioural factors, the internal milieu of oral cavity and formation of plaque biofilm on the dental and gingival surfaces. Porphyromonas gingivalis, being the major keystone pathogen of the periodontal biofilm evokes host immune responses that causes damage of gingival tissues and resorption of bones. The biofilm associated microbial

PRACTICAL RELEVANCE: Tooth extraction is one of the most commonly performed surgical procedures in small animal practice.
CLINICAL CHALLENGES: The clinician must be familiar with normal oral anatomy, utilize nomenclature accepted in dentistry and oral surgery, use the modified Triadan system for numbering teeth, identify normal structures on a dental radiograph, understand the tissues that hold the teeth in the jaws, know the biomechanical principles of tooth extraction, be able to choose the most appropriate instrument for removal of a tooth, extract teeth using closed and open techniques, a

Several studies on experimental animals indicate that the process of organogenesis crucially depends upon the spatiotemporal dose of certain critical bio-molecules. Tooth development is also not an exception. While most of the knowledge regarding the molecular mechanism of tooth development comes from the studies on mouse model, pathogenic variations identified in human tooth agenesis also provide valuable information on mammalian tooth development. Until now five major candidate genes have been identified for tooth agenesis in human. Among them, PAX9 plays the crucial role in tooth developmen

A case of trigeminal zoster in a patient with disseminated Hodgkin's disease is described. Although one case of maxillary tooth loss in a comparable patient has previously been recorded, this is the first report of mandibular tooth loss. The aetiological significance of Beomycin and I-(2-chloroethyl)-3-cyclohexyl-I-nitrosourea (C.C.N.U.) is discussed and an hypothesis for post-zoster tooth exfoliation is suggested.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the occurrence of periodontal pocketing and tooth mobility according to the tooth types in the mouth. There is a paucity of knowledge concerning which tooth types are more prone to periodontal disease from the review of literature. The study sample comprised 255 subjects, age ranged 16 years to 74 years. These subjects were those referred to the Periodontology Clinic of the University College Hospital, Ibadan, Nigeria, for one form of periodontal disease or the other. All the teeth were tested for periodontal pocketing using William's periodontal pr

BACKGROUND: Uncontrollable bleeding after tooth extraction usually occurs in patients with coagulation diseases, including hemophilia, von Willebrand's disease, vitamin K deficiency, platelet deficiency, and taking anticoagulant drugs. Hemophilia A is an X-linked recessive disorder caused by insufficiency of coagulation factor VIII. Mild hemophilia, defined by factor level between 0.05 and 0.40 IU/mL, is characterized by uncontrollable hemorrhage after trauma or invasive operations. Some mild hemophiliacs may remain undiagnosed until late adulthood. Therefore, surgical management of these pati

During daily routine oral examinations in a research colony of nonhuman primates (NHPs, Macaca fascicularis), a variety of oral-dental lesions were identified. A dental care program was established based on these findings. Based on the presence of dental clinical signs and their severity, 31 animals were triaged to be examined and treated by a veterinarian. Clinical examination consisted of visual inspection using a periodontal probe/explorer and full or partial mouth dental radiographs. Treatment was performed during the same procedure. Some animals had a follow-up examination including radio

Bone loss in the oral cavity may occur due to many causes, including infection, systemic or local alterations in the host response, or multifactorial causes. The purpose of this article is to review our present understanding of the major causes of oral bone loss in adults, with special emphasis on two major oral diseases: periodontitis and residual ridge resorption. Periodontitis is characterized by resorption of the alveolar bone as well as loss of the soft tissue attachment to the tooth. Progressive periodontitis will result in continued alveolar bone loss and may result in tooth mobility, a
