Classification and Epidemiology of Traumatic Dentoalveolar Injuries in Dogs and Cats: 959 Injuries in 660 Patient Visits (2004-2012).

The objective of this study was to determine the epidemiology of traumatic dentoalveolar injuries (TDI) in dogs and cats and to evaluate the applicability of a human classification system for TDI in dogs and cats. All patients diagnosed with a TDI were identified from the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine Dentistry and Oral Surgery Service case log and the hospital patient processing software. The study population consisted of 621 dogs and cats, in a total of 660 patient visits from 2004 to 2012, admitted for oral treatment and subsequently diagnosed with at least o

Treatment of severe localized periodontal destruction associated with a cemental tear: a case report and review of the literature.

Cemental tears have been described as a fragment of cementum becoming detached from the root surface, which can lead to severe periodontal breakdown. A 50-year-old woman with no history of periodontal attachment loss had an asymptomatic, isolated deep pocket on the mesial aspect of tooth No. 14. The radiographic examination revealed a thin, chip-like radiopacity along the lateral aspect of tooth No. 14. Periodontal flap surgery revealed a cemental tear on the apical part of the tooth. The root fragment was removed and the intrabony lesion was treated with enamel matrix derivative. A clinical e

Rapid orthodontic extrusion of crown root and cervical root fractured teeth.

This study concerns the relapse tendency and extent of root resorption in 33 extruded non-vital crown root fractured or cervical root fractured teeth in 32 patients 10-20 years old. They constitute all orthodontically extruded teeth at the Orthodontic or Pedodontic Departments, Eastman Institutet, Stockholm (1982-1987). A simple extrusion mechanism exerted a force of 60-70 p along the root axis of the tooth. An extrusion of 2-3 mm was obtained in most patients; the most extreme effect was 6 mm. In 16 patients the extrusion was achieved within 3 weeks, in 12 it lasted for 4-6 weeks and in 5, 7-

Anterior Maxillary Ameloblastic Fibroma in a Pediatric Patient: A Case Report.

Ameloblastic fibroma (AF) is a rare benign mixed odontogenic tumor, more frequently observed in children and adolescents. It typically develops in the posterior region of the mandible. Radiographically, it appears as a well-defined radiolucent lesion, requiring histological confirmation to differentiate it from other odontogenic tumors. We report the case of an eight-year-old male patient in good general health who presented following an anterior trauma. The extraoral examination was normal, while the intraoral examination revealed the avulsion of tooth 11, a complicated enamel-dentin fracture

Survival Rate of Metal Crowns Covered by Public Health Insurance System in Japan: A Quality-of-Care Perspective.

Rather than focusing solely on cost-effectiveness and accessibility, it is also important to assess the quality of treatments available under Japan's Public Health Insurance System (PHIS). The purpose of this retrospective study was to assess the survival rate of metal crowns used to replace first molars in a clinical setting. Only metal crowns made of 12% gold-silver-palladium alloy placed on first molars and available under the PHIS were included. The endpoint was removal/separation of a crown or extraction of the tooth. A total of 603 crowns fitted at 20 dental offices were investigated. Du

A mechanical and three-dimensional finite element study of the optimum tooth sectioning depth during the extraction of low-level horizontally impacted mandibular third molar.

The present study aims to determine the optimum sectioning depth for the extraction of low-level horizontally impacted mandibular third molar (LHIM3M) using mechanical and finite element analysis. One hundred and fifty extracted mandibular third molars were randomly divided into three groups: 1, 2 or 3 mm of tooth tissue was retained at the bottom of the crown. The breaking force of teeth was tested in a universal strength testing machine. The fracture surface was observed and the type of tooth breakage was recorded. According to the three groups, corresponding 3D finite element models were cr

Association of Quality of Coronal Filling with the Outcome of Endodontic Treatment: A Follow-up Study.

The aim of this study was to assess the effect of the quality of the coronal restoration and the root filling on the success of endodontic treatment. Patients treated at Kuwait University Dental Clinics (KUDC) from 2003 to 2014 were contacted by telephone calls. Demographic data and clinical records of patients, including age, gender, the tooth number, and medical history were recorded. Each patient received clinical examination for all teeth, including assessment of the coronal filling (type, quality), root- and/or coronal fracture, and the periodontal condition around the tooth (e.g., probin

18-year follow-up of dens invaginatus: retrograde endodontic treatment.

INTRODUCTION: Dens invaginatus is a rare developmental anomaly that occurs during odontogenesis, with a higher prevalence in the Caucasian race and no significant sex predilection; it can be bilateral. This anomaly occurs in approximately 1.26% of the teeth, and the maxillary lateral incisor is most often affected. METHODS: This case report describes a female patient with dens invaginatus in the maxillary right conoid lateral incisor. The patient presented to Araçatuba School of Dentistry, Universidade Estadual Paulista, São Paulo, Brazil, in 1995 with an acute periapical abscess in the palat

Management of oblique root fracture in the middle third of two maxillary immature central incisors with severe caries in mixed dentitions: a case report.

Mid-root fractures are rare injuries in young permanent teeth and tend to have poor prognoses. This study presents a case of oblique root fracture of both maxillary immature central incisors in the middle third accompanied by delayed dental visit and severe caries of all primary teeth. After restoring all the primary and permanent teeth that needed stabilization, the coronal fragments were repositioned and stabilized with a flexible splint consisting of orthodontic wire and composite resin. A comprehensive and sequential dental treatment for other oral diseases and oral hygiene instructions we

Comparison of conventional radiography with cone beam computed tomography for detection of vertical root fractures: an in vitro study.

To assess the diagnostic accuracy of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) in comparison with conventional radiography for vertical root fractures, 50 of 100 teeth were subjected to vertical root fracture (VRF) and then placed in dry mandibles. 3D scans were obtained for all teeth, and conventional radiographs were used as control images. All the images were assessed by 6 observers, who determined the presence of root fractures by using a 5-point confidence rating scale. The mean area under the curve (Az) for CBCT was 0.91, and that for conventional radiography was 0.64. The difference between

Transitory pre-eruptive malposition of a maxillary canine: report of a case.

The ectopical eruption of the maxillary canine has been related to many causative factors. This paper shows a transient pre-eruptive abnormal position of a maxillary canine in a 9-year-old boy. The change from the normal position of the canine occurred coincidentally with the inflammation of the adjacent lateral incisor due to injury. The canine returned to a normal path after treatment and healing of the lateral incisor.
