Assessment of bone loss in periodontitis from panoramic radiographs.

Bone loss in chronic periodontitis was assessed from panoramic radiographs by direct measurement from the cemento-enamel junction (CEJ) and by measuring the proportion of the tooth length supported by bone. Mesial and distal bone levels of all available teeth were assessed for 50 patients aged 30-39 years referred for periodontal treatment. 85% and 74% of surfaces were measurable by the proportional and direct techniques, respectively. 27% of surfaces had no bone loss according to the proportional score, whereas 22% had a CEJ to alveolar bone distance of less than 2 mm. In addition, over half

Correction of a Single Discolored Anterior Tooth Due to Internal Resorption: A Clinical Report.

For patients with a single discolored tooth who desire to have it lightened, a thorough examination and radiographic analysis need to be performed prior to initiating any bleaching treatment so that the cause of the discoloration can be determined. Underlying pathology, such as internal resorption, is often asymptomatic and difficult to diagnose and if left untreated could result in tooth loss. This article describes a case of a patient with a discolored maxillary central incisor resulting from internal resorption and the subsequent endodontic and bleaching therapy performed to resolve the pat…

Management of invasive cervical resorption: observations from three private practices and a report of three cases.

Invasive cervical resorption (ICR) is a type of external resorption that is not well understood or well known in the dental community. It is often misdiagnosed, leading to improper treatment or unnecessary loss of the tooth. Treatment may involve the periodontium as well as the tooth and pulp, and management can be complex. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are the keys to a successful outcome. This article discusses the decision-making process and management of ICR, with emphasis on the restorative aspects of treatment. Three treatment cases are presented that include nonsurgical and

Endodontic management of the avulsed tooth and tooth transplantation.

The major causes of post-transplantation tooth loss following tooth replacement after avulsion (exarticulation) and surgical replacement of impacted maxillary canines (auto-transplantation) are inflammatory root resorption and replacement resorption (ankylosis). This paper attempts to outline the treatment and management of replanted teeth using the current philosophies of splinting, endodontic therapy and the use of calcium hydroxide in the re-attachment of the periodontal ligament (PDL). Clinical research during the past 20 years has provided sufficient information for the development and es…

Combined Periodontal-Orthodontic Treatment of Pathologic Tooth Migration: A Case Study with 10-Year Follow-Up.

Pathologic tooth migration is a change in tooth position resulting from disruption of the forces that maintain teeth in a normal position in relation to their arch. The disruption of the equilibrium in tooth position may be caused by various etiologic factors. Loss of attachment apparatus along with a non periodontal related condition such as excess occlusal force, a progressive migration of tooth may take place. Mostly this migration can be associated with aesthetic damage of the smile line. To solve these issues, a combination of periodontal and orthodontic treatment is often needed. In this

Association of congenitally missing teeth with adult temporomandibular disorders in the urban health checkup population.

BACKGROUND: Congenitally missing tooth is the most common dental abnormality which leaves spaces in the arch, leads to numerous forms of malocclusion due to the Bolton index discrepancy and is even associated with abnormal craniofacial morphology. Even though the roles of malocclusion and tooth loss in temporomandibular disorders (TMD) development remain controversial, basic researches have found some common molecules are involved in osteoarthritis and dental agenesis. However, the association of congenitally missing teeth with TMD is unknown. We hence investigated the association of congenita…
