OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effectiveness of retroperitoneal laparoscopic approach combined with anterolateral mini-incision for lumbar spine tuberculosis.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was made on the clinical data of 22 patients with lumbar spine tuberculosis undergoing focus clearance, fusion, and internal fixation by retroperitoneal laparoscopic approach combined with anterolateral mini-incision between June 2006 and June 2012. There were 14 males and 8 females, with an average age of 42.6 years (range, 26-57 years) and with a mean disease duration of 7.3 months (range, 3-10 months)

Fungal infections of the spine are very rare and usually seen in immunocompromised patients. Acute cauda equina syndrome presenting in an immunocompetent patient is usually due to a prolapse of the intervertebral disc. Infective pathology caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis with epidural collection can also have a similar presentation. We present a case of spinal epidural abscess caused by Aspergillus fumigatus, presenting as acute cauda equina syndrome. To the best of our knowledge, spinal aspergillosis presenting as cauda equina syndrome in an immunocompetent patient has not been reported b

Cushing's disease is a disorder of hypercortisolism caused by a pituitary micro- or macro-adenoma. Most patients with Cushing's disease have a bilateral adrenal enlargement, which depends on the duration of the disease, as a result of the long standing ACTH stimulation of both adrenal glands. However, in macronodular adrenocortical hyperplasia (MNH) that is caused by Cushing's disease, if the MNH gains autonomy, a bilateral adrenalectomy, as well as the removal of pituitary adenoma, is often essential. We encountered a patient diagnosed with Cushing's disease with bilateral adrenal tuberculosi

Foot tuberculosis is rarely reported in the literature, with most tuberculosis of the foot being an uncommon manifestation of skeletal tuberculosis. Early diagnosis and timely medical and surgical intervention can significantly reduce morbidity. A 23-year-old male presented with persistent swelling and pain in his right foot for six months, accompanied by a discharging sinus over the affected area in the last week, making weight-bearing increasingly difficult. Examination revealed cystic swelling near the cuboid bone, along with constitutional symptoms. Imaging studies, including X-ray and CT,

STUDY DESIGN: Isolated tubercular involvement of craniovertebral junction in a human immunodeficiency virus-positive patient causing paraplegia and sudden death with radiologic features is presented.
OBJECTIVES: Isolated involvement of craniovertebral junction by tuberculosis causing quadriparesis is a rare entity. The role of imaging features is presented in diagnosis of craniovertebral junction tuberculosis, which is a treatable disease. Early detection of this entity with prompt treatment can prevent a fatal outcome.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Tuberculosis of the cervical spine is a rare

BACKGROUND: Intercostal neuralgia is most common in patients with herpes zoster, but it might be the initial symptom of serious diseases, such as atraumatic spinal fracture, which may lead to serious consequences if not diagnosed and treated early. Severe intercostal neuralgia is rarely reported as the first symptom of ankylosing spondylitis with atraumatic vertebral fractures.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 70-year-old Chinese Han man previously diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis presented to the hospital with intense intercostal pain without trauma. The patient was initially suspected of having he

A 6-year-old girl presented acutely with worsening frontal headaches. She had a 3-month history of lethargy, reduced appetite, weight loss, cough and intermittent fevers. A chest X-ray showed a left upper lobe consolidation, and a CT head showed multiple enhancing lesions with significant surrounding oedema in both cerebral hemispheres. Due to the strong suspicion of tuberculosis (TB), she was admitted and treated with anti-TB therapy and steroids. Following this, pulmonary infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis was confirmed by a positive PCR from induced sputum. Cerebral spinal fluid (CSF

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection has radically changed African orthopaedic practice within a decade. In Lusaka, a third of adults are infected, but most have no physical signs of the disease. Early experience showed that closed fractures healed normally, the risk of sepsis during osteosynthesis was increased and most open fractures became septic. Major orthopaedic surgery in HIV-positive patients has increased risks of sepsis which rise steeply in those with physical signs of HIV disease. Musculoskeletal infections such as tropical pyomyositis, adult haematogenous long-bone osteomy

INTRODUCTION: Pott's disease continues to be rife primarily in ivorian's setting. This large-scale study presents the Ivorian experience in the management of this disease.
AIM: To determine the epidemiological, clinical, paraclinical, therapeutic and evolutionary profile of Pott's disease in Abidjan and to identify the factors associated with neurological compressions.
METHODS: Retrospective and analytical study of 420 files of patients suffering from presumptive or confirmed Pott's disease, hospitalized in the rheumatology department of Cocody University Hospital from January 2010 to Decemb

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Spinal tuberculosis was the most common TB infection in human body. Musculoskeletal tuberculosis (TB) mostly affected lower thoracal or upper lumbar spine. However, TB infection can also occurs along vertebral spine. We reported a rare case about TB infection in cervical spine. We provided the clinical manifestation and therapeutic method for the patient. Cervical TB infection is a very rare case. Especially, when it involves in C1 and C2 like we provided on this case.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 24 years-old male came to the orthopaedic clinic with neck pain that aggrav

In patients with syringomyelia and tuberculous spondilitis accompanied by spinal disturbances (which are in accordance with clinical data considered as models with prevalent signs of disintegration and irritation in the spinal cord) the authors studied separate parameters of the H-reflex and 2 functionally different muscles: m. gastrocnemium and m. soleus. It was possible to show certain differences in the parameters of the H-reflex between the two groups of patients and between the indices of the 2 studied motoneuron pools within each group. The report contains some ideas in relation to the p

OBJECTIVE: To examine effects of percutaneous endoscopic débridement and allograft via the transforaminal approach combined with percutaneous pedicle screw fixation as treatment for single-level thoracic tuberculosis.
METHODS: This multicenter retrospective analysis included 75 patients with single-level thoracic tuberculosis who underwent percutaneous endoscopic débridement and allograft via the transforaminal approach combined with percutaneous pedicle screw fixation and were followed for >36 months between January 2012 and December 2014.
RESULTS: Follow-up was 36-48 months (average 41.1 ±

STUDY DESIGN: Review.
OBJECTIVES: The aim is to highlight the epidemiology of spinal cord injuries (SCIs) in Sub-Saharan Africa in order to improve prevention strategies.
SETTING: University Hospitals Leuven, Belgium.
METHODS: Pubmed was searched over August and September 2010. A combination of the following MeSH-terms was used: 'Africa South of the Sahara', 'Spinal Cord Diseases', 'Paraplegia' and 'Spinal Cord Injuries'. Limits were set on articles published as from 1990. The World Health Organization database was also consulted.
RESULTS: We obtained 243 hits of which 13 articles were rel
