Variance of vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Vestibular-evoked myogenic potential (VEMP) has been thought to originate from sacculus. The variance of this potential and the effectiveness of the adjustments of pInII amplitudes using average muscle tonus of ipsilateral sternocleidomastoid muscle were evaluated. In addition, clinical application of VEMP was examined in patients with acoustic tumors (ATs) and vestibular neurolabyrinthitis (VNL). STUDY DESIGN: Prospective evaluation of the VEMP in 18 normal volunteers and 6 patients. METHODS: Variance and left-right difference of each parameter, including pI latency,

[Morpho-functional changes in mauthner neurons of goldfish adapted to prolonged orthodromic stimulation of acoustic nerve in vitro].

In newly-hatched goldfish the adapted state was developed using repeated short-term stimulation of the vestibular apparatus. It differed from the non-adapted state by the absence of fatigue during the turns of fishes produced by unilateral tail fin flicks in ring channel. Electrophysiological study of Mauthner neurons (MN) in adapted goldfish using the slices of medulla oblongata incubated in vitro, has shown the preservation of the amplitude of the extracellular responses after prolonged orthodromic electric stimulation of acoustic nerve, which suppressed the responses of non-adapted MN. Thus

Neuropathologic changes in suckling and weanling rats with pyrithiamine-induced thiamine deficiency.

Pregnant and nursing Wistar rats were fed a thiamine-deficient diet, and their offspring were injected daily with pyrithiamine. The pathologic lesions in the suckling rats were examined at different times of development. There were distinct changes at 22 days of age, by which time the rats are weaned, and the morphogenesis of the cerebellum is almost completed. Before 22 days of age, there were no pathologic changes except for scattered petechial hemorrhages in the brain. After 22 days of age, acute pathologic changes were observed, in decreasing order of severity, in the vestibular nuclei, in

Assessment of auditory and vestibular damage in a mouse model after single and triple blast exposures.

The use of explosive devices in war and terrorism has increased exposure to concussive blasts among both military personnel and civilians, which can cause permanent hearing and balance deficits that adversely affect survivors' quality of life. Significant knowledge gaps on the underlying etiology of blast-induced hearing loss and balance disorders remain, especially with regard to the effect of blast exposure on the vestibular system, the impact of multiple blast exposures, and long-term recovery. To address this, we investigated the effects of blast exposure on the inner ear using a mouse mod

Ontogeny of the calcium binding protein parvalbumin in the rat nervous system.

In the adult rat brain, the calcium-binding protein parvalbumin is preferentially associated with spontaneously fast-firing, metabolically active neurons and coexists with gamma-amino-butyric acid (GABA) in cortical inhibitory interneurons. Whether this is so in developing neurons has not been explored. To this end, we have used parvalbumin immunohistochemistry to study expression of this protein in the rat nervous system during pre- and postnatal life. Our results indicate that parvalbumin first appears at embryonic day 13 in sensory system of the spinal cord, in the vestibular (VIII), the tr

Specific effects of unilateral lesions in the flocculus upon eye movements in albino rabbits.

The horizontal vestibulo-ocular reflex (HVOR) and optokinetic response (OKR) were examined in alert albino rabbits following unilateral flocculectomy. Chemical flocculectomy with local application of kainic acid was used to avoid the retrograde degeneration of inferior olive neurons that accompanies surgical flocculectomy. Effects of chemical flocculectomy, however, were identical to those of surgical flocculectomy. The following functional deficiencies were observed in the movements of the ipsilateral eye: (1) reduction of the HVOR gain; (2) increased lag of the HVOR phase; (3) increased non-

Brainstem afferents of the cholinoceptive pontine wave generation sites in the rat.

The present study was designed to investigate the distribution of brainstem neurons projecting to the pontine wave (P-wave)-generating sites in the rat. In six rats, biotinylated dextran amine (BDA) was microinjected into the physiologically identified cholinoceptive P-wave generation site. In all cases, microinjections of BDA in the cholinoceptive P-wave generating site resulted in retrograde labeling of cell bodies in many parts of the brainstem. The majority of those retrogradely labeled cells were in the pedunculopontine tegmentum, pontine reticular nucleus oralis, parabrachial nucleus, ve

Mechanisms of nystagmus.

The slow phases of nystagmus can be divided into four types based on their wave forms: linear, exponentially decaying, exponentially increasing, and sinusoidal. The former three give risk to "jerk" nystagmus; the last to "pendular" nystagmus. The drift of the eyes that creates the slow phase of nystagmus can be analyzed by considering the mechanisms that normally hold the eyes still so that images are stable upon the retina for best visual acuity. Thus, we have a vestibular-optokinetic system to keep images of stationary objects stable on the retina during head rotation; a pursuit system to ke

Vestibular perception following acute unilateral vestibular lesions.

Little is known about the vestibulo-perceptual (VP) system, particularly after a unilateral vestibular lesion. We investigated vestibulo-ocular (VO) and VP function in 25 patients with vestibular neuritis (VN) acutely (2 days after onset) and after compensation (recovery phase, 10 weeks). Since the effect of VN on reflex and perceptual function may differ at threshold and supra-threshold acceleration levels, we used two stimulus intensities, acceleration steps of 0.5°/s(2) and velocity steps of 90°/s (acceleration 180°/s(2)). We hypothesised that the vestibular lesion or the compensatory proce

Diagnostic value of vibration-induced nystagmus obtained by combined vibratory stimulation applied to the neck muscles and skull of 300 vertiginous patients.

On subjects with unilateral vestibular dysfunction, the application of a vibratory stimulation (100 Hz) to the two mastoids and the vertex, and to the right and left dorsal neck muscles produces a nystagmus directed towards the good ear in 85% of patients. Fixation must be suppressed by Frenzel's glasses or video nystagmoscopy. To be significant this nystagmus must appear in at least 3 of the 5 vibratory stimulated sites. On healthy subjects nystagmus is present in 6% of cases but never in those below 30 years. In subjects affected by central vertigo, nystagmus was elicited in 10% of cases and

Peripheral cytokines disturbance in patients with vestibular neuritis.

BACKGROUND: Vestibular neuritis (VN) is characterized by a sudden spontaneous vertigo without any other associated neurological signs, while the underlying mechanism of VN remains unclear. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to investigate the regulation of the peripheral Th1 and Th2 balance and changes in related cytokines and clarify the possible dominance of immuno-inflammatory reaction in VN. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Patients diagnosed with VN from symptom onset and age-and gender-matched healthy controls were recruited. The peripheral blood levels of cytokines and C-reactive protein (CRP) were determined

Usefulness and practical insights of the pediatric video head impulse test.

OBJECTIVE: The video head impulse test (vHIT) is a diagnostic tool to examine patients experiencing dizziness by assessing the function of the semicircular canals. vHIT has been widely studied in adults but relatively less so in children. The aim of this study was to evaluate the causes of dizziness and the results of vHIT in children. We also identified factors that affect the vHIT results such as artifacts and technical errors. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective review; SETTING: Tertiary care center. PATIENTS: A total of 39 patients who visited our clinic for dizziness from 2014 to 2017. MAIN OU

Final diagnosis of patients with clinically suspected vestibular neuritis showing normal caloric response.

Vestibular neuritis is one of the most common peripheral causes of acute vestibular syndrome, of which the diagnosis is generally based on a comprehensive interpretation of clinical and laboratory findings following reasonable exclusion of other disorders. This study aimed to investigate the final diagnosis of patients admitted to hospital under the clinical impression of vestibular neuritis who showed no unilateral caloric paresis. Forty-five patients who visited the emergency department with isolated acute spontaneous vertigo were included. Among them, six patients (13%) developed definitive

Anxiety and depression among patients with different types of vestibular peripheral vertigo.

Numerous studies have been published on comorbid anxiety and depression in patients with vertigo. However, very few studies have separately described and analyzed anxiety or depression in patients with different types of vestibular peripheral vertigo. The present study investigated anxiety and depression among patients with 4 different types of peripheral vertigo. A total of 129 patients with 4 types of peripheral vertigo, namely, benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV, n = 49), migrainous vertigo (MV, n = 37), Menière disease (MD, n = 28), and vestibular neuritis (VN, n = 15), were includ
