It is reported on 71 visually handicapped pupils. The visual acuity of 48 of these children could be tested with low-vision aids and the electronic television reading apparatus (Reinecker). With telescopic glasses (Zeiss, Keeler) 31 children had an average improvement of their visual acuity of two lines on a test board for near vision (Birkhäuser). With the reading apparatus 43 children showed an improvement of the visual acuity of 5 more lines. Only 3 to 21 pupils, who had been offered a regular use of the telescopic glasses, decided to have one. Finally our own experiences are compared with

BACKGROUND: Visual problems in older people are common and frequently under-reported. The effects of poor vision in older people are wide reaching and include falls, confusion and reduced quality of life. Much of the visual impairment in older ages can be treated (e.g. cataract surgery, correction of refractive error). Vision screening may therefore reduce the number of older people living with sight loss.
OBJECTIVES: The objective of this review was to assess the effects on vision of community vision screening of older people for visual impairment.
SEARCH METHODS: We searched the Cochrane C

BACKGROUND: PHANTOM is a novel open-field binocular integrated refraction system that uses device-specific binocular target presentation and lensless refractive simulation to perform objective refraction, subjective refraction, and visual acuity testing in one device. However, evidence is limited regarding how corrective refraction derived from such systems compares with prescriptions obtained using conventional subjective refraction combined with binocular balancing. We aimed to compare refractive correction determined using the conventional method with that obtained using PHANTOM and evaluat

PURPOSE: In glaucoma, visual field defects in the left and right eye may be non-overlapping, resulting in an intact binocular visual field. In clinical management, these patients are often considered to have normal vision. However, visual performance also relies on binocular processing. The aim of this study was to evaluate binocular visual functions in glaucoma patients with intact binocular visual field, normal visual acuity, and stereoscopy.
METHODS: We measured in 10 glaucoma patients and 12 age-similar controls: (1) monocular and binocular contrast sensitivity functions (CSF) using a mod

PURPOSE: In 2019, we described ASTEROID, a new stereotest run on a 3D tablet computer which involves a four-alternative disparity detection task on a dynamic random-dot stereogram. Stereo thresholds measured with ASTEROID were well correlated with, but systematically higher than (by a factor of around 1.5), thresholds measured with previous laboratory stereotests or the Randot Preschool clinical stereotest. We speculated that this might be due to the relatively large, sparse dots used in ASTEROID v0.9. Here, we introduce and test the stereo thresholds and test-repeatability of the new ASTEROID

BACKGROUND: School children are considered a high-risk group for visual impairment because uncorrected refractive errors and problems such as amblyopia can seriously affect their learning abilities and their physical and mental development. There are many studies reporting the prevalence of refractive errors among school children of different ethnic groups in Malaysia, however, studies concerning the prevalence of refractive errors among indigenous or Orang Asli children are very limited. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the prevalence and causes of visual impairment amo

BACKGROUND: Depictions of vision with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in public information material typically show a central region of absolute vision loss. Patients with early and moderate disease frequently do not report this. We aimed to measure how a group of people with AMD perceive everyday scenes in order to produce accurate depictions.
METHODS: We report on six people aged 65-82 years with monocular AMD (visual acuity +0.04 to +1.64 logMAR) and normal vision in the fellow eye. Participants viewed four images monocularly, alternating between eyes. The image was digitally altere

OBJECTIVE: The Effects of Youngsters' Eyesight on Quality of Life (EYE-Q) is a novel measure of vision-related quality of life (QOL) and function in children. We aim to determine the validity of the EYE-Q in childhood uveitis.
METHODS: We abstracted medical record data on arthritis and uveitis in a convenience sample of children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) and/or uveitis. In addition to the EYE-Q, parents and patients completed questionnaires on overall QOL (Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory [PedsQL]), and physical functioning (Childhood Health Assessment Questionnaire [C-HAQ])

PURPOSE: Red desaturation is a subjective, sensitive test for patients with optic nerve disease. There is no quantitative clinical test to measure the severity of color desaturation. The current study introduces a simple PowerPoint presentation for quantification of red desaturation in patients with optic neuritis.
METHODS: A Microsoft Office PowerPoint presentation was designed. A red square is shown on each half of the screen. The degree of desaturation on one side is increased in each successive slide. The patient holds a black cardboard divider between his/her eyes, such that each eye can

PURPOSE: To assess the relationship and respective contribution of ocular higher-order aberrations (HOAs) on residual accommodative performance in presbyopic patients.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We enrolled 20 patients (40 eyes) without ophthalmological pathology, between 48 and 58 years old, with a best-corrected visual acuity more than 10/10. Total aberrations were computed using the Wavescan Aberrometer (AMO, USA). The defocus curve and near visual acuity (30 and 50 cm) were measured. The relationship between accommodation ability and HOAs was evaluated aiming at a linear relationship with a si

INTRODUCTION: Primary exotropia is a divergent strabismus that appears from the first day of life to the second year. It can be isolated or associated with a pathological context requiring cerebral imaging to determine diagnosis and prognosis. The objective of this study was to report the sensorimotor state and the result of MRI in infantile exotropia.
PATIENTS AND METHOD: Forty-seven children with primary exotropia had a complete ophthalmologic assessment (visual acuity, binocular vision, refraction with cycloplegia, eye fundus) and cerebral MRI (average age, 16 months). Deviation was classi

PURPOSE: To compare development of acuity in patients with isolated infantile nystagmus and infantile nystagmus associated with a visual sensory defect.
METHODS: Visual acuities in 57 children (1 month to 4 years of age) with infantile nystagmus were assessed by using Teller acuity cards oriented vertically during binocular viewing. Twenty-two had isolated infantile nystagmus, 21 had albinism, 7 had aniridia, and 7 had mild or moderate bilateral optic nerve hypoplasia (BONH). Longitudinal acuity was measured in 40 of these patients (mean 1.8, 2.3, 3.1, and 3.3, measurements per patient group,

PURPOSE: To identify the main causes of visual impairment (VA <or= 0.2) within the population over 50 years of age examined in "Cataract Free Zone" projects sponsored by the University of Campinas from 1986 to 1995.
METHODS: A retrospective review of the ophthalmic forms used for 60,404 patients examined in 74 Cataract Projects was performed. Through mass media information, adults of the target region or city were asked to self-test their vision. Patients with VA <or= 0.2 in the better eye were to come to a visual acuity test. Using Snellen charts, visual acuity testing was done by trained au

PURPOSE: To compare recognition (letter) and resolution (grating) acuity in eyes with and without retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) residua.
METHOD: Letter acuity measured with the crowded HOTV chart or pocket cards (Good-Lite), and grating acuity measured with the Teller Acuity Card (TAC) procedure, were compared at the 3 1/2- and 4 1/2-year follow-up exams in the CRYO-ROP study. Testers were unaware of the retinal status of individual eyes.
RESULTS: Measurable scores for both letter and grating acuity were obtained from 1694 eyes at 3 1/2 years and 2101 eyes at 4 1/2 years. Correlation anal

We developed the Visual Hand Display (VHD) to measure vision in visually impaired infants and young children. The VHD is a circular fabric mitten, which is held easily by inserting the hand between the two surfaces. Black-and-white stripes are attached to one surface, 25, 15, 10, 4, and 2 mm per stripe. The VHD acuity is determined by the shortest test distance and the smallest stripes that the patient can detect. The VHD acuities were compared with preferential looking (PL) staircase acuities in 130 patients (53 males, 77 females; age range, 2 to 13 years; median, 21.0 months). Of these, 107

The authors studied phoria adaptation to horizontal base-out prism in 17 patients with well-documented cerebellar lesions. There was no significant difference between mean adaptation measured in the patients and ten normal controls. Individually, normal adaptation was found in 12 patients. Abnormal adaptation was found in five patients, all but one of which had other neurologic lesions. These results suggest that phoria adaptation to base-out prism is not diminished by a cerebellar lesion unless it is accompanied by another nervous system lesion(s).

Studies of stereopsis in infants have shown that the average age of onset is 3.5 months. This is the same age at which infants first show evidence of another binocular function, namely, preference for binocularly fusible patterns over rivalrous ones. We tracked the development, using two-alternative forced-choice preferential looking, of the two forms of binocular function in 17 infants, 11 male and six female. They were tested at regular intervals until they showed preferences for 1) a fusible pattern (vertical stripes presented to each eye) over a rivalrous one (vertical stripes presented to
