OBJECTIVE: Cricothyroid (CT) approach for vocal fold injection (VFI) has advantages of a low complication rate, suitability for in-office practice, and good patient compliance. However, it requires a high level of experience and a steep learning curve due to invisibility of needle. Recently, real-time light-guided VFI (RL-VFI) was developed for safe and precise injection into laryngeal structures under light guidance. Herein, we describe the development of a simulation-based training (SBT) program using RL-VFI for CT approach and report its preliminary application with in-training otolaryngolo

Cognitive vocal control is indispensable for human language. Frontal lobe areas are involved in initiating purposeful vocalizations, but their functions remain elusive. We explored the respective roles of frontal lobe areas in initiating volitional vocalizations. Macaques were trained to vocalize in response to visual cues. Recordings from the ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (vlPFC), the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), and the pre-supplementary motor area (preSMA) revealed single-neuron and population activity differences. Pre-vocal activity appeared first after the go cue in vlPFC, showing o

Automated and manual acoustic localizations of bowhead whale calls in the Beaufort Sea were used to estimate the minimum frequency attained by their highly variable FM-modulated call repertoire during seven westerly fall migrations. Analyses of 13 355 manual and 100 009 automated call localizations found that between 2008 and 2014 the proportion of calls that dipped below 75 Hz increased from 27% to 41%, shifting the mean value of the minimum frequency distribution from 94 to 84 Hz. Multivariate regression analyses using both generalized linear models and generalized estimating equations found

The avian middle ear differs from that of mammalians and contains a tympanic membrane, one ossicle (bony columella and cartilaginous extra-columella), some ligaments and one muscle. The rim of the eardrum (closing the middle ear cavity) is connected to the neurocranium and, by means of a broad ligament, to the otic process of the quadrate. Due to the limited number of components in the avian middle ear, the possibilities of attenuating the conduction of sound seem to be limited to activity of the stapedius muscle. We investigate to what extent craniokinesis may impact the components of the mid

Rodent ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) are influenced by immediate, prior contexts and have emerged as important indicators that monitor an individual's 'state'. They also index direct reflections of inherent 'trait' and are suggested to constitute non-invasive read-outs of pathological conditions. Analysis of USVs emitted under particular contexts could help discern strain-specific differences and existence of individual USV profiles. USVs of the Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) strain, a putative model of depression, could indicate social communication deficits. In the cage, USV emission was significantly

Learned bird song is influenced by inherited predispositions. The canary is a model system for the interaction of genes and learning on behaviour, especially because some strains have undergone artificial selection for song. In this study, roller canaries (bred for low-pitched songs) and border canaries (whose song is higher pitched, similar to the wild-type) were interbred and backcrossed to produce 58 males that sorted into seven genetically distinct groups. All males were tutored with the same set of songs, which included both low- and high-pitched syllables. Individuals were consistent wit

Febrile convulsions are common among preschool children and are studied experimentally with hyperthermia in rat pups. Although heat-induced convulsions (HC+) can affect behaviors in adulthood, to date no one has examined the effects on behavior in the neonatal period. We examined the effects of HC+ on ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) and mother-pup interactions in P10- and P12-aged rat pups. On P7, 34 pups were subjected to HC+ (32 controls, HC-) and behaviors were observed on P10 and P12. For mother-pup interactions, a trend for a sex x treatment interaction was found, with HC- females and HC+

Many complex voluntary behaviors require that motor commands be tightly coordinated between cerebral hemispheres. The neural mechanisms underlying such coordination, however, remain poorly understood. Song production in birds is a highly stereotyped learned motor behavior that requires finely tuned coordination between hemispheres. In the present study, neural activity was recorded simultaneously from the song control nucleus HVc in each hemisphere of singing adult male zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata). In all cases, the pattern of recorded multiunit activity in each hemisphere was highly c

Using an event-triggered recording system, the quantity of daily song bout production was measured weekly in male zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata) during sensory-motor learning and at one year of age. Our aim was to ask whether the development of a stereotyped vocal pattern involves a practice-driven component. If so, we hypothesized that juvenile males learning song should sing more often than adults reciting a vocal pattern they had already learned, and that greater levels of juvenile singing should be associated with improvement in the quality of the adult song. Across the period measure

In adult songbirds, seasonal changes in photoperiod and circulating testosterone (T) stimulate structural changes within the neural song control circuitry. The mechanisms that control this natural plasticity are poorly understood. To determine how quickly and in what sequence the song nuclei respond to changing daylength and circulating T, we captured 18 adult male white-crowned sparrows and kept them on short days for 12 weeks. We killed five of these birds and exposed the rest to long days (LD) and elevated T. We killed these birds either 7 or 20 d after LD + T exposure. We measured song nuc

Vocalization, the nonverbal production of sound, can be elicited in many vertebrates by stimulation in several regions of the limbic system but most easily in the caudal periaqueductal gray (PAG). This study shows that a specific cell group in the lateral part of the caudal PAG and in the tegmentum just lateral to it projects bilaterally to the nucleus retroambiguus (NRA) in the caudal medulla oblongata. Similar but much weaker projections are derived from the dorsal PAG. Neurons in the NRA in turn project via a contralateral pathway through the ventral funiculus of the spinal cord to motoneur

Foraging in social animals involves balancing the benefits of social information against the costs of competition. In nectarivorous bats, social vocalizations are commonly produced at feeding sites, yet it remains unclear whether males and females respond differently to such signals. We investigated this by testing how alert calls linked to aggressive interactions and benign social calls influence foraging choices in bats (Glossophaga mutica handleyi). Bats changed their flower choices in response to playbacks, revealing marked sex differences. Males avoided flowers paired with alert calls, wh

The architecture and dynamics of brain networks represent the structural and functional organizational principles underlying all cognitive processes and behavioral outputs, including auditory perception. However, the functional brain network and its relationship to auditory perception in non-human vocalizing animals remain inadequately characterized. To investigate these aspects, we recorded multi-channel electrocorticogram (ECoG) from Emei music frogs (Nidirana daunchina) responding to distinct acoustic stimuli and constructed functional brain networks. In general, graph theoretical analysis

Dysregulation of the dynorphin (DYN)/kappa-opioid receptor (KOR) system is heavily implicated in symptoms of alcohol use disorder (AUD) including negative affective-like states that can drive maladaptive behavioral regulation. Substantial efforts have been made towards understanding the neurobiology of DYN/KOR dysregulation; however, the role of dynorphinergic islands of Calleja (IC) within the olfactory tubercle (OT; part of the ventral striatum) remain poorly understood. Presently, adult male Wistar rats were trained to self-administer 10% alcohol, exposed to either air or alcohol vapor for

Acoustic recording tags provide fine-scale data linking acoustic signalling with individual behaviour; however, when an animal is in a group, it is challenging to tease apart calls of conspecifics and identify which individuals produce each call. This, in turn, prohibits a robust assessment of individual acoustic behaviour including call rates and silent periods, call bout production within and between individuals, and caller location. To overcome this challenge, we simultaneously instrumented small groups of humpback whales on a western North Atlantic feeding ground with sound and movement re

A wide body of evidence suggests a relationship between maternal immune activation (MIA) and neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Since social and communicative deficits are included in the first diagnostic criterion of ASD, we aimed to characterize socio-communicative behaviors in the MIA model based on prenatal exposure to poly(I:C). Our previous studies demonstrated impaired socio-communicative functioning in poly(I:C)-exposed adolescent rats. Therefore, the current study sought to clarify whether these changes would persist beyond adolescence. For this purpo

The white-eared opossum (Didelphis albiventris) is a Neotropical marsupial that occurs in the Brazilian territory. The larynx is an important organ of vocalization in mammals, although, other laryngeal functions are more fundamental for survival of mammals than phonation. The anatomical knowledge of respiratory structures is pivotal for a better understanding of the species. Thus, this study aimed to examine the larynx of the white-eared opossum by gross anatomy, computed tomography and histological description. For this, 10 adult (six females and four males) white-eared opossums (D. albiventr

The superior laryngeal nerve provides detailed sensory information from the mucosal surfaces of laryngeal structures superior to the vocal folds, including the valleculae. Injury to this nerve results in airway penetration and aspiration. Furthermore, such injuries might have an impact on the function of multiple structures involved in intraoral transport and swallowing due to connections within the brainstem. We sought to determine the effects of a surgical lesion of the superior laryngeal nerve on kinematics of the tongue, hyoid, and epiglottis during swallowing. We implanted radio-opaque ma

Members of the collapsin response mediator protein (CRMP) family are reported to be involved in the pathogenesis of various neuronal disorders, including schizophrenia and autism. One of them, CRMP4, is reported to participate in aspects of neuronal development, such as axonal guidance and dendritic development. However, no physiological or behavioral phenotypes in Crmp4 knockout (Crmp4-KO) mice have been identified, making it difficult to elucidate the in vivo roles of CRMP4. Focusing on the olfaction process because of the previous study showing strong expression of Crmp4 mRNA in the olfacto
