A Quantitative Retrospective Exposure Assessment for Former Chrysotile Asbestos Miners and Millers from Baie Verte, NL, Canada.

Despite numerous studies of asbestos workers in the epidemiologic literature, there are very few cohort studies of chrysotile asbestos miners/millers that include high-quality retrospective exposure assessments. As part of the creation of the Baie Verte Miners' Registry in 2008, a two-dimensional job exposure matrix (JEM) was developed for estimating asbestos exposures for former chrysotile asbestos miners/millers. Industrial hygiene data collected between 1963 and 1994 were analysed to assess validity for use in a retrospective exposure assessment and epidemiologic study. Registered former em

Identifying occupational carcinogens: an update from the IARC Monographs.

The recognition of occupational carcinogens is important for primary prevention, compensation and surveillance of exposed workers, as well as identifying causes of cancer in the general population. This study updates previously published lists of known occupational carcinogens while providing additional information on cancer type, exposure scenarios and routes, and discussing trends in the identification of carcinogens over time. Data were extracted from International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) Monographs covering the years 1971-2017, using specific criteria to ensure occupational re

Inter-reader agreement in HRCT detection of pleural plaques and asbestosis in participants with previous occupational exposure to asbestos.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate inter-reader agreement for the detection of pleural and parenchymal abnormalities using CT in a large cross-sectional study comprising information on individual cumulative exposure to asbestos. METHODS: The project was approved by the hospital ethics committee, and all patients received information on the study and gave their written informed consent. In 5511 CT scans performed in a cohort of retired workers previously exposed to asbestos and volunteering to participate in a multiregional survey programme (Asbestos Related Diseases Cohort, ARDCO), double randomised

Predictors of delayed return to work after back injury: A case-control analysis of union carpenters in Washington State.

METHODS: Union administrative records identified 20,642 union carpenters who worked in Washington State from 1989 to 2003. The Department of Labor and Industries provided records of workers' compensation claims and associated medical care. Work-related back claims (n = 4,241) were identified by ANSI codes (back, trunk, or neck/back) or ICD-9 codes relevant to medical care consistent with a back injury. Cases (n = 738) were defined as back injury claims with >90 days of paid lost time; controls (n = 699) resulted in return to work within 30 days. Logistic regression models estimated odds ratios…

Clinical and workplace factors associated with a return to modified duty in work-related upper extremity disorders.

Return to work following treatment for a work-related upper extremity disorder (WRUED) is affected by a variety of medical, workplace, and personal factors, and returning to modified duty may ease the transition to normal work activities. This study surveyed 165 federal government employees (127 females, 38 males) who were unable to resume their normal work after filing a workers' compensation claim for a WRUED (<90 days from claim filing) and who volunteered for a randomized study of alternative case management strategies. Before randomization, participants completed a baseline survey of uppe…

Work-related movement and lumbar spine direction: a systematic review of lifting, posture, and pain risk.

Low back pain (LBP) is a prevalent musculoskeletal condition of occupational and socioeconomic importance. The main biomechanical exposures related to LBP among workers include repetitive lifting, non-neutral trunk postures, and long-duration static trunk positions. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the role of lumbar spine movement direction during work-related lifting and posture in relation to spinal loading and the risk of LBP. PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science were searched for articles published in January 2015 - June 2025. Eligible studies included adult workers performing occup

Occupational co-exposure to biomechanical factors and neurotoxic chemicals in a representative sample of French employees.

OBJECTIVES: Musculoskeletal disorders, mainly carpal tunnel syndrome, represent a leading cause of compensation claims of workers worldwide. Despite this, and the fact that occupational exposures to biomechanical factors and neurotoxic chemicals have been individually associated with peripheral nerve damage, the prevalence of occupational co-exposure to biomechanical factors and neurotoxic chemicals has rarely been explored. Therefore, our aim was to assess the prevalence of occupational co-exposure to biomechanical factors and neurotoxic chemicals in a national representative sample of the Fr

Acute antimicrobial pesticide-related illnesses among workers in health-care facilities - California, Louisiana, Michigan, and Texas, 2002-2007.

Antimicrobial pesticides (e.g., sterilizers, disinfectants, and sanitizers) are chemicals used to destroy or suppress the growth of harmful microorganisms on inanimate objects and surfaces. Health-care facilities use antimicrobial pesticides to prevent pathogen transmission from contaminated environmental surfaces. Occupational exposures to antimicrobial pesticides are known to cause adverse health effects. To assess the nature and frequency of such exposures in health-care settings, CDC analyzed data from pesticide poisoning surveillance programs in California, Louisiana, Michigan, and Texas

Registries for Biliary Atresia and Related Disorders.

Most neonatal cholestatic disorders are rare diseases (RD), but they represent the leading indication for pediatric liver transplantation. From the pediatric surgical point of view, biliary atresia (BA) and choledochal cyst are from particular interest because diagnostic pathways and therapeutic algorithms are diverging as well as outcome parameters of follow-up studies. In addition, screening programs for BA are still at an early stage while transition of those patients with and without liver transplantation is not established yet. The newly created Web site www.bard-online.com focuses on BA

Work without a roadmap: A qualitative analysis of occupational and structural challenges among adolescent peer workers in HIV programs in Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Peer navigator programs are central to adolescent HIV service delivery across sub-Saharan Africa, particularly within differentiated and community-based care models. While evidence demonstrates their effectiveness in improving engagement, retention, and psychosocial support, less attention has been paid to the labor conditions under which peer navigators operate. Drawing on feminist political economy, this study examines how peer navigation is organized, experienced, and sustained within resource-constrained health systems. METHODS: In-depth interviews were conducted with 30 parti
