The ABO blood groups are not linked to the incidence of simple malaria infection but have been associated with rosette formation. In an effort to see if clinically severe malaria is associated with blood group, 489 patients were studied in Zimbabwe. Patients with malaria and group A blood had lower hemoglobin levels and more risk of coma than did infected patients with other blood groups. In this population, severe malaria is associated with blood group.

An investigation into the cause of acute mortality in farmed hatchling crocodiles Crocodylus niloticus led to the isolation of chlamydia from the livers of affected animals. Prominent pathological finds were acute hepatitis with intracellular chlamydial colonies and generalized oedema. A chlamydia presumed to be C. psittaci was isolated from livers of affected hatchlings. Mortality subsided after treatment with oxytetracycline. This disease is now recognized as being a major problem on crocodile farms in Zimbabwe.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate interrelationships between bacterial vaginosis (BV), vaginal yeast, vaginal practices (cleansing and drying/tightening), mucosal inflammation, and HIV acquisition.
METHODS: A multicenter, prospective, observational cohort study was conducted, enrolling 4531 HIV-negative women aged 18 to 35 years attending family planning clinics in Zimbabwe and Uganda. Participants were tested for HIV and reproductive tract infections and were interviewed about vaginal practices every 3 months for 15 to 24 months. BV was measured by Gram stain Nugent scoring, vaginal yeast by wet mount,…

A case of myiasis due to Cardylobia anthropophaga (Blanchard) (Diptera: Calliphoridae), the 'Tumbu fly', is reported for the first time in Sri Lanka, in a 10 month old infant. The infection was acquired in Zimbabwe. The child had appeared 'unwell' for nearly a week before the detection of the skin lesions. The main clinical features were irritability, restlessness and the appearance of three small lumps on the scalp behind the right ear. Identification of the fly larva and the management of myiasis are discussed.

The management of nursing services is challenging, fascinating, demanding and creative, but becomes more so in a country organizing its health care infrastructure from scratch and looking for new innovative solutions. Zimbabwe is such a country. And with nurses comprising 75-80% of its health care personnel and being increasingly given more responsibilities, the task of managing this valuable resource becomes formidable. Below, the author reports on how nurse managers are meeting their new challenge.

Tropical idiopathic lower limb gangrene is a rare disease. It was first described by Gelfand amongst the indigenous inhabitants of present day Zimbabwe. It is a bilateral and simultaneous gangrene of both lower extremities due to no obvious cause and usually seen in men during the second and fourth decade of life. The onset is always sudden and the first sign is oedema of both feet accompanied by pain. The patients are usually people who have been previously healthy. This is a report of a clinical variant of the disease.

INTRODUCTION: Infant HIV prophylaxis with broadly neutralizing anti-HIV antibodies (bNAbs) could provide long-acting protection against vertical transmission. We sought to estimate the potential clinical impact and cost-effectiveness of hypothetical bNAb prophylaxis programmes for children known to be HIV exposed at birth in three sub-Saharan African settings.
METHODS: We conducted a cost-effectiveness analysis using the CEPAC-Pediatric model, simulating cohorts of infants from birth through death in Côte d'Ivoire, South Africa and Zimbabwe. These settings were selected to reflect a broad ran…

BACKGROUND/AIMS: In Zimbabwe, cervical cancer is screened through cytology and visual inspection with acetic acid and cervicography (VIAC). The effectiveness of these methods can be increased if complemented by a human papillomavirus DNA detection tool since most cervical cancer cases are caused by persistent infection with high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) genotypes. Moreover, the possibility of multiple-genotype HR-HPV infections warrants the need for HPV detection tools with the capacity to detect both single and multiple infections. The aim of this study was to detect HR-HPV genotype…

The Rhodesian anthrax epidemic of 1978-1980 was one of the largest in recorded history. Occurring during the chaos of the Rhodesian Bush War, the anthrax epidemic led to the deaths of hundreds and caused significant economic devastation in what is now the country of Zimbabwe. To this day, the origins of this devastating outbreak remain highly controversial. However, in this article, we determine that the anthrax epidemic most likely occurred due to an endemic outbreak, exacerbated by the breakdown of services from the war, food scarcity, and a number of other unique wartime circumstances.

Thirty-one sets of conjoined twins were born in Southern Africa during the period February 1974 to May 1982 with a striking increase in incidence in 1974 and 1975. There was no ethnic or social predilection, but clustering of cases occurred in a remote area of Zimbabwe. No aetiological agent was discovered, and there was no seasonal variation in the time of conception. Female conjoined twins accounted for 62% of cases, and twenty sets were of the thoracopagus type. Four pairs were separated, three of which were of the xiphopagus subtype and have survived.

BACKGROUND: Zimbabwean government adopted competency-based curriculum in 2017 as a measure to prepare learners for life and work in an indigenised economy and increasingly globalised and competitive environment. The government also sought to ensure that learners develop skills necessary for lifelong learning in line with the emerging opportunities.
OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to explore challenges faced by teachers in the implementation of competency-based curriculum to learners with learning disabilities in Mhangura of Makonde District in Zimbabwe.
METHODS: A constructivist li…

In March 2020, universities in Zimbabwe temporarily closed and switched to remote learning to contain the spread of SARS Cov2 infections. The sudden change to distance learning gave autonomy to students to direct their own learning. To understand how the students at the University of Zimbabwe and Midlands State University adapted to emergency remote learning, focus group discussions and a self-administered questionnaire survey based on the self-regulated learning inventory were conducted to capture cognitive, motivational, and emotional aspects of anatomy learning during the COVID-19 pandemic.…
