ABO-incompatible kidney transplantation: long-term outcomes.

In the past 20 years, over 2,000 cases of ABO-incompatible living kidney transplantation (ABO-ILKT) have been performed in Japan, expanding the donor pool and overcoming the serious shortage of organ donors. Overall long-term outcomes (>20 years) have been excellent and almost identical to the outcomes of ABO-compatible living kidney transplantation (ABO-CLKT). In the last decade, ABO-ILKT has become accepted as a therapeutic alternative for end-stage renal failure. Recently, approximately 30% of all living donor kidney transplantations in Japan have been ABO-ILKT. In the 1990s, desensitizatio

Hand-assisted laparoscopic splenectomy in ABO-incompatible kidney transplant recipients.

OBJECTIVE: We perform living-related ABO-incompatible kidney transplantations to alleviate the organ shortage in our country. Splenectomy has been performed routinely in these recipients, although its clinical significance remains controversial. In this study, we have reported our experience with a hand-assisted laparoscopic splenectomy (HALS) technique. METHODS: Between April 2000 and December 2006, 50 patients (23 males) underwent ABO-incompatible kidney transplantation with HALS. The mean age and weight of the recipients were 44 +/- 13 years and 56 +/- 12 kg, respectively. All patients und

Is the ABO incompatibility a risk factor in bone marrow transplantation?

ABO histo-bloodgroups are strong transplantation antigens. In bone marrow transplantation, foreign ABO red cell antigens are not ignored by the immune system of the host, neither by the immunocompetent cells of the graft. Although ABO incompatibility is not considered a contraindication in bone marrow transplantation (BMT), its clinical consequences are still a matter of investigation. An overview of reports published by different groups is given and discussed. They present conflicting data regarding the role of the ABO match between patient and donor in the haematopoietic stem cell (HSC) tran

Postpartum chills phenomenon: is it a feto-maternal transfusion reaction?

OBJECTIVE: To examine the theory that the postpartum shivering phenomenon is related to feto-maternal bleed during the third stage of labor. METHODS: One hundred laboring low-risk women who had a normal vaginal delivery were observed for the presence of postpartum chills. The duration of the first and second stages of labor changes in body temperature, maternal and fetal blood types and the use of epidural anesthesia were recorded. Following the delivery maternal blood was examined for the presence of fetal red blood cells using the Kleihauer-Betke stain. RESULTS: Complete data was available

Role of G6PD, ABO incompatibility, low birth weight and infection in neonatal hyperbilirubinaemia.

In a random sample of 1,000 neonates from a Delhi Hospital the incidence of jaundice was 53% and of hyperbilirubinaemia (HB) 6%. Rh incompatibility was detected in 4% of the neonates. In 74 cases of HB (excluding those due to Rh incompatibility) collected from the above series and from subsequent hospital admissions, incidences of different factors contributing to HB were: low birth weight in 54%, G6PD deficiency in 35%, ABO incompatibility in 31% and infection in 31%. In 45% of them a single factor was present and in the remaining more than one factor was present.

ABO blood group associations with corneal and organ failure diagnoses on the Ecuadorian transplant waiting list: A 2017-2022 observational cohort study.

BACKGROUND: ABO antigens are broadly expressed on endothelial and epithelial glycoproteins and modulate innate immune responses, complement activation, tissue immunogenicity, and endothelial-derived haemostatic factors. Their differential distribution across the specific diagnoses that lead to end-stage organ failure has been little explored in Latin American populations, where a high prevalence of group O provides a distinct genetic background to examine these associations. We report an exploratory analysis in national transplant waiting list of Ecuador. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective

Novel regulatory variant in ABO intronic RUNX1 binding site inducing A3 phenotype.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Mixed-field agglutination in ABO phenotyping (A3, B3) has been linked to genetically different blood cell populations such as in chimerism, or to rare variants in either ABO exon 7 or regulatory regions. Clarification of such cases is challenging and would greatly benefit from sequencing technologies that allow resolving full-gene haplotypes at high resolution. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We used long-read sequencing by Oxford Nanopore Technologies to sequence the entire ABO gene, amplified in two overlapping long-range PCR fragments, in a blood donor presented with A3B

Association of maternal ABO blood type with lesion level and birthweight of children with spina bifida: a descriptive study.

The etiology of spina bifida, a neural tube birth defect, is largely unknown, but a majority of cases are thought to be genetic in origin. Although maternal blood type was found not to be associated with the occurrence of spina bifida, the analysis was never extended to other aspects of the disorder. The purpose of this descriptive study was to determine if maternal blood type was related to characteristics of children with spina bifida. The blood type of 221 mothers of children with spina bifida enrolled on the Arkansas Spinal Cord Disability Registry from 1995 to 2008 was obtained by mailed

Heterogeneity in the half-life of factor VIII concentrate in patients with hemophilia A is due to variability in the clearance of endogenous von Willebrand factor.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have reported marked interindividual variation in factor VIII (FVIII) clearance in patients with hemophilia (PWH) and proposed a number of factors that influence this heterogeneity. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the importance of the clearance rates of endogenous von Willebrand factor (VWF) compared with those of other FVIII half-life modifiers in adult PWH. METHODS: The half-life of recombinant FVIII was determined in a cohort of 61 adult PWH. A range of reported modifiers of FVIII clearance was assessed (including plasma VWF:antigen and VWF propeptide levels; VWF-

Association between ABO blood groups and preeclampsia.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the association between the ABO blood group and preeclampsia. METHODS: This is a case-control study that included patients with (n = 253) and without (n = 457) preeclampsia/eclampsia in Northeastern Mexico. Data were obtained from electronic medical records. Binary multiple logistic regression analysis was used for analyzing the association between the ABO blood group and preeclampsia according to parity status while adjusting for potential confounders. RESULTS: Blood groups A, B, and AB showed adjusted odds ratios of 0.6 (95%CI 0.3-1.0), 1.1 (95%CI 0.6-2.2), and 0.3

Transplant outcomes of 100 cases of living-donor ABO-incompatible kidney transplantation.

BACKGROUND: Although ABO-incompatible (ABOi) kidney transplantation (KT) has been performed successfully, a standard preconditioning regimen has not been established. Based on the initial antidonor ABO antibody titers, an individualized preconditioning regimen is developed, and this study explored the efficacy and safety of the regimen. METHODS: From September 1, 2014, to September 1, 2020, we performed 1668 consecutive living-donor KTs, including 100 ABOi and 1568 ABO-compatible (ABOc) KTs. ABOi KT recipients (KTRs) with a lower antibody titer (≤1:8) were administered oral immunosuppressive

Seeking Standardized Definitions for HLA-incompatible Kidney Transplants: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: There is no standard definition for "HLA incompatible" transplants. For the first time, we systematically assessed how HLA incompatibility was defined in contemporary peer-reviewed publications and its prognostic implication to transplant outcomes. METHODS: We combined 2 independent searches of MEDLINE, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library from 2015 to 2019. Content-expert reviewers screened for original research on outcomes of HLA-incompatible transplants (defined as allele or molecular mismatch and solid-phase or cell-based assays). We ascertained the completeness of reporting on a

Characterization of a novel glycolipid with a difucosylated H-antigen in human blood group O erythrocytes with monoclonal antibody HMMC-1 and its detection in human uterine cervical carcinoma tissues.

Humanized monoclonal antibody HMMC-1 established by immunizing transchromosomal mice with a human uterine endometrial cancer cell line has been found to react with the H-antigen carried on core l O-glycans through cotransfection of glycosyltransferases for O-glycans and inhibition of antibody-binding with synthetic oligosaccharides. However, direct binding analysis of an antibody against glycosphingolipids from human erythrocytes with different ABO blood groups revealed that it was able to bind selectively with polar glycolipids in blood group O, but not blood group A, B and AB erythrocytes. Living donor liver transplantation.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) continues to evolve, generating interesting issues on the applicability and safety of new techniques. RECENT FINDINGS: Specific selection criteria and standardized surgical techniques with high ethical and medical standards are needed to minimize donor risk. In this aspect, minimally invasive donor hepatectomy has caused controversies. The reproducibility and safety of pure laparoscopic major hepatectomy in LDLT remains uncertain. Therefore, a stepwise approach is needed to avoid unnecessary donor risk. To expand the living donor po
