Effect of Exercises Performed with External Focus Instructions on Transversus Abdominis Thickness in Postpartum Women with Diastasis Recti.

Background: Diastasis recti abdominis (DRA) is a common condition in postpartum period and may affect abdominal function and trunk stability. Rehabilitation programs often include exercises targeting deep abdominal muscles such as the transversus abdominis. Instructional strategies derived from motor learning research, including the use of external focus, may influence how these exercises are performed. Objectives: To investigate changes in transversus abdominis muscle thickness during the execution of rehabilitation exercises performed with external focus instructions in women with DRA. Metho…

Effect of pelvic floor muscle electrical stimulation on lumbopelvic control in women with stress urinary incontinence: randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: The pelvic floor muscle (PFM) plays a role not only in lumbopelvic stabilization, but also in incontinence and sexual function. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of PFM training by electrical stimulation (ES) on urinary incontinence, PFM performance (i.e. strength and power), lumbopelvic control, and abdominal muscle thickness in women with stress urinary incontinence (SUI). METHODS: Participants were randomized into ES and control groups. The ES group underwent PFM ES for 8 weeks, whereas the control group underwent only a walking program. The impact o

Ultrasound imaging of sacral reflexes.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the reliability of examination of the guarding reflex of the pelvic floor by dynamic perineal ultrasonography in children with bladder dysfunction and in controls. METHODS: A total of 40 patients with nonneurogenic bladder/sphincter dyssynergia, 40 with spina bifida, and 40 controls underwent a dynamic ultrasound examination of the pelvic floor while coughing and while being tapped on the abdominal wall. The reflex action of the puborectal muscle in females, and the combined action of the puborectal muscle and external sphincter muscle in males, were recorded. RESU

Assessment of the acute effects of different PEP levels on respiratory pattern and operational volumes in patients with Parkinson's disease.

The aim of the study was to determine the acute effects of positive expiratory pressure (PEP) on breathing pattern, operational volumes and shortening velocity of respiratory muscles on patients with Parkinson's disease. It was evaluated 15 patients and healthy controls, by optoelectronic plethysmography, using PEP in three different levels (10, 15 and 20cmH2O). Breathing pattern changed in both groups. Parkinson group increased tidal volume in all PEP levels (p<0.001), but with lower values compared to control. End-inspiratory chest wall volume increased in the Parkinson group at all PEP leve

Propriospinal myoclonus due to cervical disc herniation. Case report.

Propriospinal myoclonus is a rare form of spinal myoclonus. In most cases the cause has remained unclear. Secondary propriospinal myoclonus has been described secondary to various disorders including trauma, tumor, and infection. Thus far, propriospinal myoclonus caused by cervical disc herniation has not been reported. In the present report, the authors describe the case of a 53-year-old man who presented with radicular symptoms of the right C-6 nerve root and myoclonic twitches predominantly affecting the abdominal muscles but spreading to adjacent muscles. The spread was triggered and enfor…

Airflow synchronous with oscillatory acceleration reflects involuntary respiratory muscle activity.

To explore mechanisms causing involuntary airflow synchronous with oscillatory axial whole body acceleration (oscillatory axial acceleration, OAA) such as that during locomotion, we monitored airflow, acceleration, and electromyograms (EMGs) of the rib cage and abdominal muscles in standing subjects undergoing OAA at 3, 6, and 9 Hz at accelerations of 0.1-0.95 g. Subjects relaxed or performed static respiratory maneuvers at constant lung volume with glottis open. Oscillatory airflows (0.01-3.01 s(-1)) synchronous with OAA were not consistent with expectations for a passive respiratory system, …

Simulation of acute spinal cord injury: effects on respiration.

The respiratory effects of acute spinal injury and paralysis are difficult to study. Urgent medical needs of human spinal cord injury victims usually preclude study, while induction of spinal cord lesions in awake animals is not feasible ethically. We utilized controlled, segmental infusion of epidural anesthetic in awake, highly trained, implanted canines to reversibly simulate the effects of thoracic and cervical (paraplegic and quadriplegic) spinal cord injury. We studied six animals, an average of 29 days after implantation with electromyogram and sonomicrometry transducers in transversus

Effects of hydrotherapy kinetic chain exercises on muscle coactivation, pain management, and quality of life in men with chronic low back pain. Randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Chronic low back pain (CLBP) frequently results in impaired coactivation of the transverse abdominal and multifidus muscles due to pain, disuse, and compensatory strategies. Understanding these alterations is critical for the development of targeted rehabilitation interventions. This study aims to evaluate the effects of water kinetic chain exercises on enhancing muscle coactivation, alleviating pain, and improving quality of life in men with chronic non-specific low back pain. METHODS: A double-blind randomized controlled trial was conducted with 60 male participants aged between

Pentraxin 3 is an adipose tissue-related serum marker for pancreatic cancer cachexia predicting subsequent muscle mass and visceral fat loss.

Cancer cachexia, a paraneoplastic syndrome characterized by ongoing skeletal muscle mass loss, is accompanied by adipose tissue loss and strongly affects chemotherapy endurance. Our aim was to detect a serum marker reflecting pancreatic cancer cachexia and predicting subsequent loss of muscle mass and adipose tissue, focusing on adipose tissue-secreted proteins. Murine-derived pancreatic cancer cells were orthotopically injected into the mouse pancreatic tail. After 3 weeks, RNA sequencing of perigonadal fat and orthotopic tumors was carried out. We analyzed stocked sera and clinical data of m

Acute abdominal rhabdomyolysis after body building exercise: is there a "rectus abdominus syndrome?".

Report of a 19-year-old man who was admitted to the hospital after vigorous exercise with signs of the "acute abdomen" syndrome. Since intestinal reasons for the complaints were excluded, a myocardial infarction was considered. However, the excessively increased serum CK levels indicated a disorder of the voluntary muscles. A biopsy taken from the rectus abdominis revealed typical features of acute rhabdomyolysis, which was obviously restricted to the rectus abdominis. Together with a somewhat later observed autopsy case of a young male with acute abdominal rhabdomyolysis, also restricted to t

Marriage abdominoplasty expands the mini-abdominoplasty concept.

The marriage of aggressive superwet liposculpture of the abdomen and adjacent anatomic regions with a modification of well-established open surgical techniques to address skin excess and perform muscle plication was used to treat 29 patients presenting for aesthetic abdominal contouring over the past 3 1/2 years. The charts of 57 patients who had aesthetic contouring procedures on the abdomen performed from December of 1994 to July of 1998 were retrospectively reviewed. Fifteen patients underwent suction lipectomy alone, 13 patients were treated with conventional abdominoplasty, and 29 underwe

Giant omphalocele: A novel approach for primary repair in the neonatal period using botulinum toxin.

INTRODUCTION: Giant omphalocele (GO) is a complex condition for which many surgical treatments have been developed; however, no consensus on its treatment has been reached. The benefits and efficacy of botulinum toxin A (BTA) in the repair of large abdominal wall defects in adults has been proven, and its reported use in children has recently grown. The goal of this study is to describe a novel technique for primary repair of GO using BTA during the neonatal period and report our initial experience. METHODS: patients were followed from August 2020 to July 2022. BTA was applied to the lateral

Impact of perforator sparing on anterior component separation outcomes in open abdominal wall reconstruction.

INTRODUCTION: Anterior component separation (ACS) is a well-established, highly functional technique to achieve fascial closure in complex abdominal wall reconstruction (AWR). Unfortunately, ACS is also associated with an increased risk of wound complications. Perforator sparing ACS (PS-ACS) has more recently been introduced to maintain the subcutaneous perforators derived from the deep epigastric vessels. The aim of this study is to evaluate wound-related outcomes in patients undergoing open AWR after implementation of a PS-ACS technique. METHODS: A prospectively collected database were quer
