OBJECTIVES: To investigate the association between bone mineral status and spinal radiographic damage in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and determine whether bone mineral status can predict further spinal radiographic damage after 2 years.
METHODS: Bone mineral density (BMD) of the lumbar spine (anteroposterior and lateral projections), femoral neck, and total hip and trabecular bone score (TBS) of the lumbar spine were measured in AS patients (n = 54) who fulfilled the modified New York criteria. Spinal radiographic damage was scored on cervical and lumbar spine radiographs using

PURPOSE: The evaluation of skeletal fragility in Cushing's syndrome (CS) is a clinical challenge, since dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) does not capture abnormalities in bone microstructure induced by glucocorticoid excess. Hypercortisolism was shown to increase bone marrow adiposity, but it is still unknown whether high bone marrow fat (BMF) as measured by vertebral magnetic resonance spectroscopy may predict fracture risk in this clinical setting. In this cross-sectional study, we evaluated the association between BMF and vertebral fractures (VFs) in patients with CS.
METHODS: Twenty

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To review the differential diagnosis of low bone mineral density (BMD).
RECENT FINDINGS: Osteoporosis is the most common cause of low BMD in adults; however, non-osteoporotic causes of low BMD should be considered in the differential diagnosis of patients with low BMD. Mild osteogenesis imperfecta, osteomalacia, and mineral and bone disorder of chronic kidney disease as well as several other rare diseases can be characterized by low BMD. This review summarizes the differential diagnosis of low BMD. It is important to differentiate osteoporosis from other causes of low BMD s

Because fragility fractures have an enormous impact on the practice of medicine and global health systems, effective screening is imperative. Currently, dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), which has limited ability to predict fractures, is being used. We evaluated the current literature for a method that may constitute a better screening method to predict fragility fractures. A systematic review of the literature was conducted on computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and ultrasound to evaluate screening methods to predict fragility fractures. We found that ultrasound

OBJECTIVE: This cross-sectional study aimed to explore potential jawbone changes secondary to bisphosphonate (BP) treatment of osteoporosis using digital panoramic and periapical radiography.
METHODS: Thirty-nine women, previously examined with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, were radiographed by digital panoramic and/or periapical radiography. On periapical radiographs, trabecular bone structure and fractal dimension analyses of the mandibular first molar and edentulous regions were performed. On panoramic radiographs, the mandibular cortical width (MCW) was calculated, and trabecular bone

Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is recommended for osteoporosis screening in men aged 70 years and older but supportive data is limited. The aim of this study was to determine the efficacy of DXA for the diagnosis of increased fragility in this group of subjects. We retrospectively identified men aged 70 years and older without prior history of fracture and/or conditions predisposing to low bone mineral density (BMD) who attended the VA endocrinology clinic and performed DXA for osteoporosis screening. We analyzed the relationship between BMD and demographic, anthropometric data and bio

UNLABELLED: We conducted the first comparison of dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT) outcomes in adolescent girls with anorexia nervosa. We observed deficits in bone density by both tools. pQCT assessments were associated with many of the same clinical parameters as have been previously established for DXA.
INTRODUCTION: Adolescents with anorexia nervosa (AN) commonly exhibit bone loss, but effects on bone geometry are less clear. We compared measures obtained by DXA and pQCT in girls with AN.
METHODS: Seventy females (age 15.5 ± 1.9

Bone disease, specifically low bone mineral density, is a common and undertreated complication that begins during childhood in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). This case describes a male baseball player, aged 14years, with undiagnosed CF who sustained a left midshaft femoral fracture while running toward base; 8months later, he sustained a right midshaft femoral fracture under similar conditions. After the second fracture, further evaluation revealed low bone mineral density and CF. There is no previously published report of pathologic fractures occurring in the femoral shaft in an athlete

It remains unclear if differences in bone mineral density (BMD) exist at different skeletal sites between people with schizophrenia and age- and sex-matched healthy controls (HCs). Major databases were searched from inception until February 2016 for studies measuring BMD using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) at any skeletal site in individuals with schizophrenia. Ten studies investigating 827 people with schizophrenia (55.4 % female, 33.8 ± 9.7 years) and 1379 HCs (58.7 % female, 34.7 ± 9.1 years) were included. People with schizophrenia had significantly reduced BMD at the lumbar spine

The first objective of this study was to determine normative digital X-ray radiogrammetry (DXR) values, based on original digital images, in a pediatric population (aged 6-18 years). The second aim was to compare these reference data with patients suffering from distal radius fractures, whereas both cohorts originated from the same geographical region and were evaluated using the same technical parameters as well as inclusion and exclusion criteria. DXR-BMD and DXR-MCI of the metacarpal bones II-IV were assessed on standardized digital hand radiographs, without printing or scanning procedures.

BACKGROUND: Spinal cord injury (SCI) is associated with a rapid loss of bone mass, resulting in severe osteoporosis and a 5- to 23-fold increase in fracture risk. Despite the seriousness of fractures in SCI, there are multiple barriers to osteoporosis diagnosis and wide variations in treatment practices for SCI-induced osteoporosis.
METHODS: We review the biological and structural changes that are known to occur in bone after SCI in the context of promoting future research to prevent or reduce risk of fracture in this population. We also review the most commonly used methods for assessing bon

Postmenopausal osteoporosis is a chronic disease wherein increased bone remodeling reduces bone mass and bone strength. Antiresorptive agents including bisphosphonates are commonly used to mitigate bone loss and fracture risk. Osteoclast inhibition via denosumab (DMAb), a RANKL inhibitor, is a newer approach for reducing fracture risk in patients at increased risk for fracture. The safety of transitioning from bisphosphonate therapy (alendronate; ALN) to DMAb was examined in mature ovariectomized (OVX) cynomolgus monkeys (cynos). One day after OVX, cynos (7-10/group) were treated with vehicle

SUMMARY: The utility of bone mineral density (BMD) testing in chronic kidney disease (CKD) is not known. We performed a meta-analysis of studies reporting on BMD and fracture in CKD. All but one study was cross-sectional. BMD was lower in those with CKD and fractures compared to those without fractures.
INTRODUCTION: CKD is associated with an increased risk of fracture. The utility of dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) to assess fracture risk in CKD is unknown.
METHODS: We performed an updated meta-analysis and systematic review of published studies that reported on the association betwe

BACKGROUND: Lack of physical activity (PA) is an important modifiable risk factor for bone mineral density (BMD). Time spent in sedentary behaviour (SB), or time spent in non-exercising seated and reclining postures, has recently emerged as a new public health risk, independent of the amount of time someone spends being active. As national surveys report that adults spend on average 8h per day being sedentary, rising to 10h a day in older age, it has been hypothesised that a repeated exposure to sitting in modern daily life, whether it is for travelling, working or leisure, might have a delete

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Recently, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has published normative data for bone mineral density (BMD) measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scanning. However, the impact this has had on the diagnosis of osteoporosis when compared to currently used Caucasian databases has not been analysed. Hence, this study was undertaken to look at agreement between the Hologic Database (HD) based on BMD normative data in Caucasians and the ICMR database (ICMRD) in defining osteoporosis in subjects with or without hip fracture.
