Oral ampicillin and penicillin V was given to 23 and 42 children, respectively, with upper respiratory infections. The absorption of the drugs was followed on one of the first days of treatment for 3 hours after administration by taking capillary samples and determining the serum levels. Approximately 60% of the children were tested for oral absorption during convalescence, 6-8 days after the initiation of the treatment. Oral lactose and glucose/galactose loading tests were done in Bantu children convalescing from kwashiorkor and pellagra. Small bowel biopsies and disaccharidase estimations were performed in all except 2 patients. Lactose absorption was more impaired and intestinal lactase levels were lower in the pellagra than in the kwashiorkor group. The fact that diarrhoea after admission to hospital was less common in pellagra than kwashiorkor was ascribed to a lesser lactose load due to the early introduction of a mixed diet in the former group, in comparison with milk feeds only in the latter group. An immunofluorescence technique for demonstrating Treponema pallidum in fixed films made from suspected chancre exudate is described. The method used is basically a reversal of the fluorescent treponemal antibody absorption test. It makes use of the fact that by using a syphilitic serum from which group antibody has been absorbed by an extract of Reiter treponemes, leaving only specific antibody, Treponema pallidum can be indentified.
