The lungs of 136 persons dying as a result of road traffic accidents were studied retrospectively for the presence of fat and bone marrow emboli. Comparable investigations were made in 54 cases of acute myocardial failure reported to the medicolegal authorities and in 50 cases of fatal drug overdose. Ankle sprains are common during sporting activities and can have serious consequences. Understanding of injury mechanisms is essential to prevent injuries, but only two previous studies have provided detailed descriptions of the kinematics of lateral ankle sprains and measures of kinetics are missing. In the present study a female handball player accidentally sprained her ankle during sidestep cutting in a motion analysis laboratory. Kinematics and kinetics were calculated from 240 Hz recordings with a full-body marker setup. The injury trial was compared with two previous (non-injury) trials.

UNLABELLED: The traumatic rupture of an accessory spleen is a very rare condition and only few cases have been reported in the literature. We describe the case of a 51-year-old man undergone splenectomy for trauma several years before, who developed hemoperitoneum due to a laceration of a voluminous accessory spleen, following an accidental two-meter fall. As a conservative management of the injury was not possible, an accessory splenectomy was then required. Thus, a briefly review of the literature about this uncommon topic was perfomed.

Background. The breech extraction of the fetus through the vagina has a greater risk of hip fracture compared with the extraction by abdominal route. Case. A 2390 g female infant was delivered at 39 weeks by elective cesarean section for breech presentation. The newborn sustained a fracture of the right femur. Paragangliomas of the cauda equina are rare neuroepithelial tumors, usually manifesting clinically as sciatica. Here, we report a case of cauda equina paraganglioma with an unusual course in a 43-year-old man. His main complaints were erectile and sphincter dysfunction. The low back pain was initially ascribed to accidental injury. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed intradural tumor at the L2/L3 level. The patient underwent gross tumor resection, and the diagnosis of paraganglioma was based on neuropathologic examination. The symptoms completely resolved after tumor resection.
