Wiener kernel analysis of responses from anteroventral cochlear nucleus neurons.

Responses to pseudo-random Gaussian white noise, tones and clics were recorded from neurons in the anteroventral cochlear nucleus (AVCN) of barbiturate anesthetized cats. The responses to white noise were used to calculate estimates of the zero-, first- and second-order Wiener kernels for these neurons. The Wiener kernels did contain useful information on the fundamental, DC and second harmonic components of the responses of AVCN neurons to tones, clicks and noise. However, they generally did not provide predictions of the difference tone distortion products found in the peripheral auditory sy

A micromechanical contribution to cochlear tuning and tonotopic organization.

The response properties of hair cells and nerve fibers in the alligator lizard cochlea are frequency selective and tonotopically organized with longitudinal position in the organ. The lengths of the hair-cell hair bundles also vary monotonically with longitudinal position. In this study, quantitative measurements were made of the motion of individual hair bundles in an excised preparation of the cochlea stimulated at auditory frequencies. The angular displacement of hair bundles is frequency selective and tonotopically organized, demonstrating the existence of a micromechanical tuning mechanis

A comparison of three methods for predicting hearing loss from acoustic reflex thresholds.

Previously reported acoustic reflex threshold data from normal and hearing-impaired subjects indicate that the effect of stimulus bandwidth on reflex thresholds is altered by sensorineural hearing loss. It is this change in the "bandwidth effect" that forms the basis for predicting hearing loss from reflex threshold data. Three predictive procedures were compared for 17 normal and 60 hearing-impaired ears. All methods correctly identified most hearing losses but none of the methods accurately estimated magnitude of hearing loss. Two methods were characterized by a high rate of false positives.

Disturbing the sound of silence: Bilateral temporal cortex stimulation and auditory mental imagery.

Auditory imagery depends on temporal-cortical mechanisms that generate and sustain internal sound representations. If these mechanisms are causally involved, externally perturbing temporal cortex should alter the quality of imagery. We tested whether bilateral high-frequency transcranial random noise stimulation (hf-tRNS) over temporal cortex alters the vividness and control of auditory imagery. Forty-nine healthy adults completed two sessions on separate days, receiving Active hf-tRNS in one session and Sham in the other (order counterbalanced). The Bucknell Auditory Imagery Scale (BAIS; Vivi

Touch Helps Hearing: Evidence From Continuous Audio-Tactile Stimulation.

OBJECTIVES: Identifying target sounds in challenging environments is crucial for daily experiences. It is important to note that it can be enhanced by nonauditory stimuli, for example, through lip-reading in an ongoing conversation. However, how tactile stimuli affect auditory processing is still relatively unclear. Recent studies have shown that brief tactile stimuli can reliably facilitate auditory perception, while studies using longer-lasting audio-tactile stimulation yielded conflicting results. This study aimed to investigate the impact of ongoing pulsating tactile stimulation on basic a

An Exploratory Study of Bimodal Electro-Aural Stimulation Through the Ear Canals for Tinnitus.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to explore the potential for bimodal auditory and noninvasive electrical stimulation at the ears to alleviate tonal, somatic tinnitus that was investigated in a small preliminary trial (11 participants). DESIGN: Auditory stimulation took the form of short "notched noise" bursts customized to each participant's tinnitus percept. Simultaneous pulsed electrical stimulation, intended to facilitate neuroplasticity, was delivered via hydrogel electrodes placed in opposite ears. RESULTS: After a 6-week intervention period, average Tinnitus Functional Index (TFI)

Exposure to first-person shooter videogames is associated with multisensory temporal precision and migraine incidence.

Adaptive interactions with the environment require optimal integration and segregation of sensory information. Yet, temporal misalignments in the presentation of visual and auditory stimuli may generate illusory phenomena such as the sound-induced flash illusion, in which a single flash paired with multiple auditory stimuli induces the perception of multiple illusory flashes. This phenomenon has been shown to be robust and resistant to feedback training. According to a Bayesian account, this is due to a statistically optimal combination of the signals operated by the nervous system. From this

Sounds enhance visual completion processes.

Everyday vision includes the detection of stimuli, figure-ground segregation, as well as object localization and recognition. Such processes must often surmount impoverished or noisy conditions; borders are perceived despite occlusion or absent contrast gradients. These illusory contours (ICs) are an example of so-called mid-level vision, with an event-related potential (ERP) correlate at ∼100-150 ms post-stimulus onset and originating within lateral-occipital cortices (the ICeffect). Presently, visual completion processes supporting IC perception are considered exclusively visual; any influen

Transcranial alternating current stimulation with speech envelopes modulates speech comprehension.

Cortical entrainment of the auditory cortex to the broadband temporal envelope of a speech signal is crucial for speech comprehension. Entrainment results in phases of high and low neural excitability, which structure and decode the incoming speech signal. Entrainment to speech is strongest in the theta frequency range (4-8 Hz), the average frequency of the speech envelope. If a speech signal is degraded, entrainment to the speech envelope is weaker and speech intelligibility declines. Besides perceptually evoked cortical entrainment, transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) entrain

Group behavioural responses of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) to light, infrasound and sound stimuli.

Understanding species-specific flight behaviours is essential in developing methods of guiding fish spatially, and requires knowledge on how groups of fish respond to aversive stimuli. By harnessing their natural behaviours, the use of physical manipulation or other potentially harmful procedures can be minimised. We examined the reactions of sea-caged groups of 50 salmon (1331 ± 364 g) to short-term exposure to visual or acoustic stimuli. In light experiments, fish were exposed to one of three intensities of blue LED light (high, medium and low) or no light (control). Sound experiments includ

Spatial pattern of BOLD fMRI activation reveals cross-modal information in auditory cortex.

Recent findings suggest that neural representations in early auditory cortex reflect not only the physical properties of a stimulus, but also high-level, top-down, and even cross-modal information. However, the nature of cross-modal information in auditory cortex remains poorly understood. Here, we used pattern analyses of fMRI data to ask whether early auditory cortex contains information about the visual environment. Our data show that 1) early auditory cortex contained information about a visual stimulus when there was no bottom-up auditory signal, and that 2) no influence of visual stimula

Stimulus-induced drop episodes in Coffin-Lowry syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Coffin-Lowry syndrome (CLS) is a rare disorder characterized by moderate to severe mental retardation, facial dysmorphism, tapering digits, and skeletal deformity. Paroxysmal drop attacks occur in patients with CLS, characterized by sudden loss of muscle tone induced by unexpected tactile or auditory stimuli. Our objective is to characterize these attacks better using neurophysiologic studies. METHODS: We report 2 teenage boys with CLS and stimulus-induced drop episodes (SIDEs). Simultaneous surface electromyogram (EMG) and video electroencephalogram were performed during SIDEs on

Temporal properties of chronic cochlear electrical stimulation determine temporal resolution of neurons in cat inferior colliculus.

As cochlear implants have become increasingly successful in the rehabilitation of adults with profound hearing impairment, the number of pediatric implant subjects has increased. We have developed an animal model of congenital deafness and investigated the effect of electrical stimulus frequency on the temporal resolution of central neurons in the developing auditory system of deaf cats. Maximum following frequencies (Fmax) and response latencies of isolated single neurons to intracochlear electrical pulse trains (charge balanced, constant current biphasic pulses) were recorded in the contrala

Transient-evoked otoacoustic emissions and contralateral suppression in patients with unilateral tinnitus.

Transient-evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAE) have been recorded from 20 patients with unilateral tinnitus and symmetrical hearing up to 2000Hz. Responses were digitally low-pass filtered at 2000Hz. The function of the medial olivocochlear system (MOC) was examined by contralateral acoustic stimulation (CAS) with broadband noise at 50 and 70 dB SPL. Emission amplitude was significantly lower in tinnitus ears in the 10-15ms part of the response. No difference in contralateral suppression of amplitude could be found. The latency shifts were small and were not helpful in separating tinnitus from…

Lorazepam and diazepam differently impair divided attention.

Effects of ethanol (EtOH, 0.65 + 0.35 g.kg-1), diazepam (DZ, 15 and 30 mg), lorazepam (LZ, 2 mg) on divided attention were measured in two placebo-controlled crossover studies with healthy young subjects. The test comprised four parallel computer screens with a ball moving along a circular obstacle course on each screen at different rates. When the ball entered an obstacle on any screen, the subject had to press the respective button. The obstacles varied in numbers and shapes, and randomly changed their location every 10 s. Concomitant aural stimuli were responded to by pushing the foot pedal

Influence of succinylcholine on middle component auditory evoked potentials.

Auditory evoked potentials in the middle component time domain (post-stimulus, 8 to 50 msec) were recorded in response to 1,000-Hz tone pips in a normal-hearing adult subject. Electromyographic (EMG) responses in response to ulnar nerve shocks were recorded from the ipsilateral hypothenar muscles. With the assistance of an anesthesiologist, data were collected during a normal resting state, a state of light sedation, and a state of complete skeletal muscle paralysis from succinylcholine administration. During the paralyzed state, there was abolition of the normal EMG responses seen in the rest
