Higher risk of developing mood disorders among adolescents with comorbidity of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and disruptive behavior disorder: a nationwide prospective study.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), conduct disorder (CD), and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) are frequently comorbid. Previous studies suggested that the comorbidity of CD and ODD in ADHD may increase the risk of a further development of mood disorder, but most studies had a small sample size. Using a population-based prospective study design, a large sample composed of 1277 adolescents with ADHD-alone, 46 with ADHD + ODD, 87 with ADHD + CD, and 5640 age/gender-matched controls were enrolled in 2003. These cases were followed to 2010 to identify the cases developing unipolar

Increased concentrations of soluble CD40 ligand may help to identify type 1 diabetic adolescents and young adults at risk for developing persistent microalbuminuria.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies on the pathogenesis of diabetic complications have demonstrated the important role of a number of aberrantly expressed molecules acting together in the development of early diabetic microvascular complications. Soluble CD40 ligand (sCD40L) is supposed to be one of the most likely candidates for both retinopathy and nephropathy. METHODS: In January 1989, sCD40L was measured in 340 normoalbuminuric diabetic adolescents and young adults. Participants were examined at baseline and biannually thereafter. sCD40L was measured every 2 years during a 16-year follow-up period

How many children remain fracture-free during growth? a longitudinal study of children and adolescents participating in the Dunedin Multidisciplinary Health and Development Study.

While much is known regarding the incidence and pattern of fractures during growth, information is sparse as to how many children fracture repeatedly and how many remain fracture-free during growth. The Dunedin Multidisciplinary Health and Development Study, a birth cohort, whose members were questioned regularly throughout growth (at ages 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15 and 18 years) concerning injuries including fractures, has provided a unique opportunity to answer these questions. Life-table analysis showed that approximately half the children remained fracture-free throughout growth [girls 60.1%, (95

A mother-child intervention program in adolescent mothers and their children to improve maternal sensitivity, child responsiveness and child development (the TeeMo study): study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Children of adolescent mothers present a high-risk group for child neglect and maltreatment. Previous findings suggest that early interventions can reduce maltreatment by improving the quality of mother-child interaction, particularly maternal sensitivity. The aim of the current study is to evaluate the effects of a mother-child intervention program using home visits and video-feedback regarding mother-child interaction (STEEP-b) plus psychiatric treatment of the mother in cases where mental illness is present compared with TAU (treatment as usual, that is, standardized support by

Development and Internal Validation of an Interpretable Machine Learning Model for Identifying Past-Year Nonsuicidal Self-Injury Among Adolescents With Depression: Retrospective Study.

BACKGROUND: Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) is common among adolescents with depressive disorders and is associated with substantial clinical burden. Machine learning may assist in identifying multidimensional patterns associated with NSSI, although its incremental value beyond direct clinical assessment remains uncertain. OBJECTIVE: This study compares 7 supervised machine learning model variants for classifying past-year NSSI status among adolescents with depressive disorders and conducts detailed analyses of interpretability, sensitivity, subgroup performance, and clinical utility using a r

Development and Preliminary Evaluation of a Digital Intervention to Improve Disclosure to Family Caregivers, Stigma Coping, and Social Support Among Pregnant Adolescents Living with HIV.

Among sub-Saharan African adolescents, delayed HIV and pregnancy disclosure, stigma, and insufficient social support are barriers to engagement in antenatal care and services to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV. We developed and evaluated the acceptability and short-term preliminary efficacy of a digitally illustrated, narrative-based intervention designed to address these barriers among Kenyan pregnant adolescents aged 15-19 years living with HIV. We used an iterative, theory-informed, mixed methods human centered design approach. Individual adolescent and dyadic adolescent-caregiv

Promoting Social Identities as Resources-The Role of Ethnic and National Identity Development for Adolescents' Global Identity Coherence in Ethnic-Culturally Diverse Schools in Germany.

Ethnic and national identities can be meaningful social identities promoting students' well-being and academic engagement. Unclear is whether and how each identity contributes to ethnic-culturally minoritized versus majoritized adolescents' global identity coherence. Using longitudinal data collected in three cohorts during 2018-2022, we conducted multigroup mediation analyses, testing whether a school-based identity intervention promoted ethnic and national identities (exploration, resolution) 1 week post-intervention (T2), which in turn, promoted identity coherence (more synthesis, less conf

Genetic and environmental influences on structural brain development from childhood to adolescence: A longitudinal twin study on cortical thickness, surface area, and subcortical volume.

The human brain undergoes structural development from childhood to adolescence, with specific regions in the sensorimotor, social, and affective networks continuing to grow into adulthood. While genetic and environmental factors contribute to individual differences in these brain trajectories, the extent remains understudied. Our longitudinal study, utilizing up to three biennial MRI scans (n=485), aimed to assess the genetic and environmental effects on brain structure (age 7) and development (ages 7-14) in these regions. Heritability estimates varied across brain regions, with all regions sh

Registered Report: Parallel Ethnic Identity Development of Mexican-origin Adolescents and Mothers under the Influence of Neighborhood Latinx Concentration and Ethnic-Racial Diversity.

Past research has shown that co-ethnic or ethnically-racially diverse neighborhoods can serve as safe and supportive places for U.S. immigrant families to explore and develop clarity about their ethnic identity. Although parents undergo concurrent changes in the adaptation process with their children, existing research has predominantly focused on adolescents, with fewer examination on adult parents' continued ethnic identity development; additionally, researchers also overlook the impact of neighborhood context on ethnic identity in parents. To fill this gap, this registered study used a thre

Development and examination of the attribution questionnaire-substance use disorder (AQ-SUD) to measure public stigma towards adolescents experiencing substance use disorders.

BACKGROUND: Public stigma may significantly impact adolescents with substance use disorders (SUDs), leading to limited treatment accessibility and utilization. However, few measures have been validated to assess public SUD stigma towards adolescents. In this study we developed the Attribution Questionnaire-Substance Use Disorder (AQ-SUD) by modifying the Attribution Questionnaire, a commonly used measure of public mental illness stigma. We examined 1) the psychometric properties of the AQ-SUD with supporting data from other stigma scales and 2) preliminary data on adults' perceptions of public

Stress symptoms and Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19): a comparative study between Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and typically developing children and adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) related confinement severely impacted people wellbeing. Many studies focused on general population, although it is reasonable to expect that patients with neurodevelopmental disorders might have been at higher risk. Children/adolescents with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) might be potentially more vulnerable, due to their intolerance to forced restrictions that limit stimulating experiences, to obligation to follow instructions and to acceptation of imposed rules. We aimed to compare stress-related behavioral changes of the first

Association between prescribed opioid use for acute pain in adolescents and the subsequent development of opioid misuse and substance use disorders: a systematic review protocol.

OBJECTIVE: This review aims to examine prescribed short-term opioid use in adolescents to treat acute pain. The review will analyze the influence of opioid use on future non-medical opioid use (misuse) or substance use disorders (addiction) in adolescents and young adults. INTRODUCTION: Prescription opioids are medically indicated for acute pain. Descriptive studies of administrative datasets and surveys implicate adolescent opioid exposure as a risk factor for subsequent opioid misuse and addiction. This review will provide a synthesis of the literature on the association between prescribed

Moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity trajectories during adolescence and young adulthood predict adiposity in young adulthood: The Iowa Bone Development Study.

This study examined the associations of moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity (MVPA) trajectories in adolescence through young adulthood with adiposity in young adults. Participants from The Iowa Bone Development Study cohort were longitudinally assessed (N = 297; 57% female). Accelerometry-measured MVPA (min/day) at ages 15 through 23 years, and fat mass and visceral adipose tissue mass indices (kg/m2, g/m2) derived from dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry scans at age 23 years were analyzed. Latent trajectory analyses classified MVPA into two patterns. Multivariable linear regression

Altered gray matter volume and structural co-variance in adolescents with social anxiety disorder: evidence for a delayed and unsynchronized development of the fronto-limbic system.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is a prevalent mental disorder diagnosed in childhood and adolescence. Theories regarding brain development and SAD suggest a close link between neurodevelopmental dysfunction at the adolescent juncture and SAD, but direct evidence is rare. This study aims to examine brain structural abnormalities in adolescents with SAD. METHODS: High-resolution T1-weighted images were obtained from 31 adolescents with SAD (15-17 years) and 42 matching healthy controls (HC). We evaluated symptom severity with the Social Anxiety Scale for Children (SASC) and the Scree

The Belfast Youth Development Study (BYDS): A prospective cohort study of the initiation, persistence and desistance of substance use from adolescence to adulthood in Northern Ireland.

BACKGROUND: Substance misuse persists as a major public health issue worldwide with significant costs for society. The development of interventions requires methodologically sound studies to explore substance misuse causes and consequences. This Cohort description paper outlines the design of the Belfast Youth Development (BYDS), one of the largest cohort studies of its kind in the UK. The study was established to address the need for a long-term prospective cohort study to investigate the initiation, persistence and desistance of substance use, alongside life course processes in adolescence a
