Trends and disparities in coronary artery disease related mortality among adults with chronic kidney disease in the United States from 1999 to 2019.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Coronary artery disease (CAD) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) often coexist and contribute significantly to cardiovascular mortality. This study aims to evaluate national trends and disparities in CAD-related mortality among U.S. adults with CKD from 1999 to 2019. METHODS AND RESULTS: Mortality data from the CDC WONDER database were analyzed, identifying CAD (ICD-10 codes I20-I25) and CKD (ICD-10 code N18) as multiple causes of death. Age-adjusted mortality rates (AAMRs) and crude mortality rates (CMRs) per 100,000 persons were calculated. Annual percentage change (APC) a

Updated Frequency of EGFR and KRAS Mutations in NonSmall-Cell Lung Cancer in Latin America: The Latin-American Consortium for the Investigation of Lung Cancer (CLICaP).

INTRODUCTION: Previously, we reported the frequency of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and KRAS mutations in nonsmall-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients in Latin America. The EGFR mutation frequency was found between Asian (40%) and Caucasian (15%) populations. Here, we report the updated distribution of NSCLC mutations. METHODS: A total of 5738 samples from NSCLC patients from Argentina (1713), Mexico (1417), Colombia (1939), Peru (393), Panama (174), and Costa Rica (102) were genotyped for EGFR and KRAS. RESULTS: The median patient age was 62.2 ± 12.3 years; 53.5% were women, 46.7%

The Burden of Obesity-Related Cancers in Oklahoma: Trends, Demographics, and Spatial Patterns.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is a growing public health crisis in the United States, with over 70% of adults classified as overweight or obese. It has been associated with multiple health conditions, including at least 13 types of cancer. Despite this, awareness of the obesity-cancer link remains low, with only 53% of Americans aware of it as of 2019. Understanding the epidemiology of obesity-related cancers is critical, particularly in high-obesity states like Oklahoma. OBJECTIVE: To assess the incidence and trends of obesity-related cancers in Oklahoma, focusing on demographic, geographic, and socio

Geographic access to triple negative breast cancer clinical trials: are trials located near patients?

BACKGROUND: Geographic proximity to clinical trials is a major barrier to trial participation, but geographic access to trials has not been specifically characterized for triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). We evaluated the geographic distribution of TNBC treatment trials across U.S. counties and examined associated social and demographic characteristics. METHODS: All trials registered on ClinicalTrials.gov as of September 30, 2024 (n = 510,397) were queried, and active phase II and III TNBC treatment trials were identified through keyword searches. County-level population estimates from th

Preeclampsia and Eclampsia: A Complex Interplay Between Prepregnancy Obesity, Race, and Ethnicity.

BACKGROUND: Preeclampsia and eclampsia (PE/E) are major contributors to maternal morbidity and mortality in the United States, disproportionately affecting Black, Hispanic, and American Indian/Alaska Native individuals. Prepregnancy obesity is a well-established risk factor, but the variation of its association with PE/E by race and ethnicity, particularly among Asian/Pacific Islander (PI) and Hispanic subpopulations, remains unclear. METHODS: This population-based cohort study included 311 497 pregnancies at Kaiser Permanente Northern California from 2011 to 2020. We used Poisson regression

Hidden figures underlying quality measures: revealing hidden racial inequalities in end-of-life cancer care delivery: a cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Calls for healthcare systems to reduce disparities in cancer care access and outcomes draw on comparisons of existing measures across race and ethnicity subgroups. This approach may hide inequities driven by systematic bias in the timing of care delivery. The goals of this study were to: (1) identify differences in the timing of care delivery between racial groups, and (2) determine whether these differences could be identified from quality measures. METHODS: Retrospective decedent follow-back study of hospitals treating Medicare fee-for-service beneficiaries with advanced cancer

The impact of pneumococcal vaccination and nasopharyngeal colonization on the performance of a serotype-specific urine antigen detection (SSUAD) assay.

To better inform pneumococcal immunization policies, ongoing surveillance for pneumococcal community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is crucial. To estimate the serotype-specific CAP burden of pneumococcal disease following the introduction of a new 15-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV), V114, a 15-plex serotype-specific urine antigen detection (SSUAD) assay was developed as a tool for surveillance of Streptococcuspneumoniae serotypes. V114-017 (NCT03547167; EudraCT 2017-004915-38) was a phase 3 randomized controlled trial in which participants (18-49 years) received V114 or 13-valent PCV (P

Primary healthcare policy and vision for community pharmacy and pharmacists in the United States.

The United States (US) has a complex healthcare system with a mix of public, private, nonprofit, and for-profit insurers, healthcare institutions and organizations, and providers. Unlike other developed countries, there is not a single payer healthcare system or a national pharmaceutical benefits scheme/plan. Despite spending over USD 10,000 per capita in healthcare, the US is among the worst performers compared to other developed countries in outcomes including life expectancy at birth, infant mortality, safety during childbirth, and unmanaged chronic conditions (e.g., asthma, diabetes). Echinococcus multilocularis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Echinococcus multilocularis is a tapeworm of foxes that may cause a zoonotic infection resulting in a highly pathogenic and potentially fatal chronic liver infestation called human alveolar echinococcosis. Radical liver resection currently offers the only potential cure. Although alveolar echinococcosis is a rare parasitic disease that is restricted to transmission in the northern hemisphere, the parasite is geographically widespread being distributed from Alaska, across Canada and north central USA, through northern Europe and Eurasia to Japan. The present review summarizes
