A rare case of asthmatic patient with left Chilaiditi's syndrome.

The purpose of this clinical case is to underline the rarity of the case in question, in which the diagnosis of left Chilaiditis syndrome was made in a woman with bronchial asthma. The Caucasian woman in question is 79 years old and was seen in our clinic in January 2023 for episodes of recurrent dyspnea, chest heaviness, wheezing, belching, dysphagia and epigastric abdominal pain associated with recurrent episodes of bronchitis. We used simple spirometry, which revealed a picture of moderate mixed ventilatory deficit with a decrease in small airway volume, a reduction in peak expiratory flow,

Skin-permissible NIR-actuated hyperthermia using a photothermally responsive hydrogel membrane for the effective treatment of antibiotic-resistant bacterial infection.

With the long-term widespread overuse of antibiotics, a large number of antibiotic-resistant bacteria have emerged and become a serious threat to healthcare systems. As an alternative strategy, near-infrared light (NIR)-actuated photothermal treatment has been developed for killing antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Although promising, the widespread applications of photothermal antibacterial platforms face great challenges due to the skin-harmful high laser irradiation. In this work, a novel NIR-responsive hydrogel membrane for effective photothermal sterilization upon light irradiation at skin-p

Hybrid Hydrogels from Nongelling Polymers Using a Fibrous Peptide Hydrogelator at Low Concentrations.

Nature-made hydrogels typically combine a wide range of multiscale fibers into biological composite networks, which offer an adaptive property. Inspired by nature, we report a facile approach to construct hybrid hydrogels from a range of natural or commercially available synthetic nongelling polymers (e.g., poly(ethylene glycol), poly(acrylic acid), carboxylated cellulose nanocrystal, and sodium alginate) at a concentration as low as 0.53 wt % using a nonionic fibrous peptide hydrogelator. Through simply mixing the peptide hydrogelator with a polymer aqueous solution, stable hybrid hydrogels c

Early gene expression in Pseudomonas fluorescens exposed to a polymetallic solution.

The molecular response of Pseudomonas fluorescens cells exposed to a mixture of heavy metals remains largely unknown. Here, we studied the temporal changes in the early gene expression of P. fluorescens cells exposed to three doses of a polymetallic solution over two exposure times, through the application of a customized cDNA microarray. At the lowest metal dose (MD/4), we observed a repression of the Hsp70 chaperone system, MATE and MFS transporters, TonB membrane transporter and histidine kinases, together with an overexpression of metal transport (ChaC, CopC), chemotaxis and glutamine synt

Injectable multifunctional microgel encapsulating outgrowth endothelial cells and growth factors for enhanced neovascularization.

Recent cell-based therapy approaches have employed both nanotechnologies and other biomedical technologies to enhance their therapeutic potential. A combined strategy using therapeutic stem/progenitor cells and angiogenic proteins is attractive for the treatment of vascular disease. In this study, we developed an injectable multifunctional micro-sized gel system (microgel), composed of arginine-glycine-aspartic acid (RGD)-conjugated alginate, for the delivery of both cells and growth factors in vivo. The microgels encapsulated with outgrowth endothelial cells (OECs) and growth factors (vascula

Polyelectrolyte complexed alginate-oligochitosan nanoparticles for co-delivery of doxorubicin and indocyanine green in triple negative breast cancer therapy.

Breast cancer remains the most prevalent malignancy affecting women worldwide. Nanomedicine offers promising strategies to drastically enhance the efficacy of current treatments by enabling spatiotemporal control over cancer diagnostics and therapy. Here, we developed a triple-modal nanocarrier integrating chemo-, photothermal and photodynamic therapies within a single nanoplatform to address the limitations of conventional monotherapies. The nanoparticles were synthesized via polyelectrolyte complexation of sodium alginate and oligochitosan, yielding a biocompatible, non-toxic nanosystem suit

Optimization of alginate/carboxymethyl chitosan microbeads for the sustained release of celecoxib and attenuation of intestinal inflammation in vitro.

Multiple anti-inflammatory medications have helped treat inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). However, oral administration has minimal absorption and systemic side effects. This study aims to investigate the potential of encapsulating anti-inflammatory drug celecoxib (Cele) within microbeads for the treatment of IBD. Microbeads were formed by cross-linking carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCs) with sodium alginate (Alg) through the ionic gelation method and optimized through response surface methodology. Additionally, the study revealed a mucoadhesivity value of 59.32 ± 0.74 % for the optimized microbead

Cardiac tissue regeneration by microfluidic generated cardiac cell-laden calcium alginate microgels and mesenchymal stem cell extracted exosomes on myocardial infarction model.

Regenerative medicine is one of the effective approaches for myocardial infarcted (MI) tissue due to the low capacity of heart for regeneration. However, cell therapy with local administration has shown poor cell retention in the targeted area and limited engraftment capacity at the intended location, resulting in inadequate tissue regeneration. The present study involves mesenchymal stem cell-derived exosomes and encapsulated cells in small and injectable calcium alginate microgels by a specialized microfluidic device to decrease inflammation and increase cell retention in the infarcted tissu

Dressings and topical agents for treating pressure ulcers.

BACKGROUND: Pressure ulcers, also known as bedsores, decubitus ulcers and pressure injuries, are localised areas of injury to the skin or the underlying tissue, or both. Dressings are widely used to treat pressure ulcers and promote healing, and there are many options to choose from including alginate, hydrocolloid and protease-modulating dressings. Topical agents have also been used as alternatives to dressings in order to promote healing.A clear and current overview of all the evidence is required to facilitate decision-making regarding the use of dressings or topical agents for the treatmen

Design and evaluation of polysaccharide-based transdermal films for the controlled delivery of nifedipine.

It was aimed to develop the matrix type polysaccharide-based transdermal films of nifedipine (NFD) to provide its long term plasma concentration. The mechanical tests were carried out on gel formulations which were utilised in the fabrication of transdermal films to determine the type of polymer (pectin, sodium alginate) and plasticizer (propylene glycol, glycerine) as well as their concentrations. The mechanical strength, elasticity, bioadhesiveness and the drug release characteristics of optimised films containing NFD were evaluated. Permeation of NFD from the films with/without adding an en

Crystallized colony-stimulating factor-1 receptor inhibitor protects immunoisolated allo but not xeno transplants in primates.

Immunoisolation devices containing therapeutic protein-secreting cells offer potential for long-term therapy without immune suppression. However, scar tissue formation driven by the foreign body response (FBR) hinders nutritional exchange and ultimately leads to graft failure. We previously showed that inhibiting the colony-stimulating factor-1 receptor (CSF1R) pathway in monocytes and macrophages can block the FBR to implanted materials. Here, we demonstrate that coencapsulation of slow-releasing CSF1R inhibitor (GW2580) crystals with human stem cell-derived β cells (SC-β) in alginate spheres
