The case is reported of a patient with "refractory" type anemia and acute thyrotoxicosis. There was no evidence of iron or vitamin deficiency, a fact which suggested that the anemia was probably secondary to the acute thyrotoxicosis since correction of the anemia occurred following successful antithyroid therapy with Lugol's solution (aqueous iodine solution) and propylthiouracil without specific hematological treatment. This unusual association of "refractory" type anemia and acute thyrotoxicosis is discussed in the light of data from experimental animal models and the very small number of ot…

A survey was carried out in Guyana to determine the prevalence and the etiology of the nutritional anemias among both sexes, in various age groups, and in pregnant and lactating women. The sample consisted of 590 subjects drawn from 103 households selected by multistage cluster sampling. Anthropometric and hematological measurements and stool investigations for intestinal parasites were carried out in each subject. Socioeconomic and other demographic data were obtained for each household. High prevalences of anemia, although of a relatively mild degree, were found among all age groups especial…

Hematologic abnormalities in childhood lead poisoning may be due, in part, to the presence of other disorders, such as iron deficiency or thalassemia minor. In order to reassess increased lead burden as a cause of microcytic anemia, we studied 58 children with class III or IV lead poisoning, normal iron stores, and no inherited hemoglobinopathy. Anemia occurred in 12% and microcytosis in 21% of these children. The combination of anemia and microcytosis was found in only one of 58 patients (2%). When only children with class IV lead poisoning were studied, the occurrence of microcytosis increas…

We performed quantitative fecal examinations, hemograms, and serum iron determinations on 103 first-grade children from Vieques Island, Puerto Rico, to determine whether trichuriasis was associated with iron deficiency and anemia. Although hemoglobin values tended to be slightly lower in Trichuris-infected children, there was no association between trichuriasis and serum iron or transferrin saturation values. These data demonstrate that in lightly infected children such as the population studied trichuriasis is not associated with iron deficiency anemia.

Although sickle cell anemia rarely presents with clinical manifestations in the newborn period, it should be considered a possible cause of unexplained early jaundice in black newborn infants. If sickle cell disease is suspected, sickle cell preparation and hemoglobin electrophoresis of the infant and of both parents should be carried out.

7 out of 39 patients with pernicious anemia developed 9 different neoplasms during a period of 3--20 years after the diagnosis of pernicious anemia. These primary neoplasms originated from the lymph nodes, larynx, colon, stomach, kidney, meninges, maxillary sinus and eighth nerve. Treatment with vitamin B12 did not influence the development of tumor. Statistical analysis showed that the observed incidence of 9 neoplasms in this group was significantly higher than the expected 3.3 cases during the aggregate follow-up period (p = 0.002). Although a higher incidence of neoplasms in patients with …

After assessing the data currently available on the multiple modalities used to manage priapism secondary to sickle cell disease we adopted a specific therapeutic regimen for the treatment of this problem. Early non-surgical measures, including hydration, alkalization and analgesics, rapid red cell infusion to double the hematocrit and late shunting procedures in conjunction with exchange transfusion, offer the soundest approach on pathophysiological grounds. There is currently no evidence to support early surgical intervention as the best approach to conserve potency in this problem.

Lead-induced anemia in rats, which is of a microcytic, hypochromic type, has been shown to be a result of an interference with the metabolism of copper and iron. In this complex interaction, copper may be the target upon which ingested lead has its antagonistic effect on hematopoiesis. The depressions in hematocrit and hemoglobin levels resulting from exposure to lead may occur secondarily to the effects of a lead-induced copper deficiency on iron mobilization and utilization. The metabolic fault induced by lead is seen in a reduction of serum iron, elevation of serum iron binding capacity, an…

With the purpose of analyzing the evolution in weight before and after treatment of megaloblastic anemia with folic acid, we studied the clinical changes and the evolution in weight in 8 malnourished children who developed this type of anemia during their recovery. Seven out of the 8 cases were less than 20 months of age; 5 of them came from mothers who had had five or more pregnancies; in 7 a history of diarrhea of prolonged course was presented and 2 cases had been given sodium diphenylhydantoin. Increase in weight before treatment of anemia with folic acid was lesser than the one for the da…

Clinical symptomatology, pathohystiological characteris of bone marrow and the effects of treatment achieved in 21 patients with aplastic anaemia (a.a.) have been presented in this paper. Compared to one of our previous analised serie the number of patients with a.a. of both sexes and age has doubled for the last few years. The ethiogenesis in 14 cases was of unknown origin. In tree cases chloramphenicol was a cause, paroxysmal nocturnal haemoglobinuria in three other cases and one appeared in pregnancy. Pathohystiology of bone marrow has in 7 cases acellular in 11 hypocellular and in tree par
