Lower-extremity injuries are common among dancers and cause significant absences from rehearsals and performances. Fifty-five supramalleolar osteotomies were performed in 35 patients for progressive hindfoot valgus in myelomeningocele. All patients were ambulatory. Severe swelling and skin necrosis are not uncommon following foot and ankle surgery, particularly trauma surgeries. A skin suture technique is presented that has the advantages of being simple, providing good skin eversion and apposition with minimal tension and risk of ischemia, and being easy to remove. The purpose of this study was to examine the prevalence of foot and ankle problems in 99 patients with clinically proven rheumatoid arthritis. Concepts based on newer medical information concerning ankle injuries have changed in recent years. With these changing concepts, the method of treatment has also changed. It is the purpose of this article to review some of the commonly known information concerning ankle sprains, to emphasize the association of subtalar injury with the ankle sprain complex, to outline new information concerning the static stabilizers on the lateral aspect of the ankle, and finally, to utilize this information in producing a rationale for a new type of surgical treatment for chronic instability of the ankle.

To define the clinical role of MRI of the ankle joint, a total of 88 patients was investigated. In the evaluation of ligamentous injury, MRI was inferior to established imaging methods. By contrast, it provided additional therapy-relevant information in the assessment of hemophilic arthropathy, osteochondritis dissecans, and inflammatory and neoplastic diseases of the ankle joint. In the latter conditions, MRI may make other more conventional methods of examining the ankle joint unnecessary.

Fractures of the ankle (distal tibia) that involve the physis or the articular surface are one of the more common injuries for which operative treatment is indicated in children. It should be considered if accurate reduction of the articular surface, the physis, or both cannot be achieved by closed means. Operative treatment often will be required in Salter-Harris type III and IV fractures, juvenile Tillaux, and triplane fractures.

Many pediatricians desire to work with young athletes. However, most pediatricians have not been trained to treat common musculoskeletal injuries in athletes. The tendency is to refer the athlete to a specialist with expertise in the management of musculoskeletal trauma. However, pediatricians should be more involved in the diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of injuries to their patients who are athletes. The most common musculoskeletal injury in athletes is the ankle sprain. This article is a review of the basic principles of diagnosis and management of ankle sprains.

The efficacy of flurbiprofen was studied by means of a double-blind randomized clinical trial involving 50 patients with an acute lateral ankle distortion (grade I). It could not be demonstrated that the NSAID shortened the duration of convalescence after this injury. Neither the pain nor the swelling showed a statistically significant decrease. Side effects were more frequent in patients treated with flurbiprofen. In view of these findings use of flurbiprofen in the treatment of acute ankle distortions is to be regarded as inadvisable.
