[A combination of amputation of the upper arm and a plexus lesion. Case report].

A 17-year-old male sustained an amputation of his left arm and a simultaneous complete brachial plexus lesion on the same side. The median nerve was torn nearly completely out of the amputate and the ulnar nerve was avulsed of the stump. The severed extremity was replanted without primary nerve reconstruction. In a further operation three and one-half months later, a neurolysis of the left brachial plexus was performed and the proximal stump of the median nerve was connected to the distal stump of the ulnar nerve using nerve grafts. Two years post trauma the patient has regained sensibility do…

Deletion of the distal long arm of chromosome 1: a definable syndrome.

Based on analysis of 15 cases, there appears to be a characteristic facial appearance and pattern of associated malformations that would allow clinical delineation of deletion of the distal bands of 1q. Characteristic manifestations include round face with prominent "cupid's bow" and downturned corners of the mouth, thin vermilion borders of lips, long upper lip with smooth philtrum, short and broad nose, epicanthal folds, apparently low-set ears, micrognathia, microcephaly, abnormal hands and feet, variable cardiac, genital, and other anomalies, moderate to severe mental retardation, and grow

Hematologic manifestations associated with deletions of the long arm of chromosome 20.

We investigated 20 patients with hematologic disorders who had a clone of cells with a deletion of most of a chromosome #20 long arm (20q-) in the bone marrow. Three patients had polycythemia vera (PV), 6 had acute nonlymphocytic leukemia (ANLL), 8 had preleukemia (PL), and 3 had other myeloproliferative disorders. In our laboratory, a 20q- chromosome is found in 6% of patients with PV, 3% of patients with ANLL, and 1% of patients with PL. Among the 6 patients with ANLL and a 20q- abnormality, 3 had erythroleukemia. There were no apparent clinical differences among our patients with 20q- chrom…

Partial deletion of the long arm of chromosome 4: a clinical syndrome.

Partial deletion of the long arm of chromosome 4 at q31 results in a clinical syndrome of mental retardation, characteristic ears, facial bone hypoplasia, cleft palate very prone to scarring on repair, and specific hand abnormalities. A female, aged 9 years, is described and compared with six other reported cases.

The problems in replantation of limbs amputated through the upper arm region.

We performed three replantations at the upper arm: two patients had severely crushed arms and one patient was at advanced age (50 years). One replanted arm was reamputated because of severe neuralgia 1 year, 3 months after replantation. In the other two cases, sensation was recovered to fingertips and powerful motion of the elbow joint was gained. However, pinch or grasp was impossible because of insufficient reinnervation to the extensor muscles. In replantation at the proximal region, recovery of motor function generally tends to be poor especially in a crush injury or in the case of advance…

Terminal deletion of the long arm of chromosome 1 in a malformed newborn.

Microcephaly and craniofacial dysmorphia, cleft palate, cardiac malformation, and hypospadias are observed in a child with 46,XY,del (1)(q42).

The radiological pattern associated with the trisomy of the short arm of chromosome No 4.

A fairly constant constellation of roentgen anomalies has been detected in the skeleton of 9 patients with the trisomy of the short arm of chromosome No 4. The more common changes involve the skull, spine and pelvis, while the limbs, as well as the internal organs, are less affected. Microcephaly, hypertelorism, small and closed sella, malocclusion, scoliosis, "square" vertebral bodies, narrow iliac wings, wide iliac angles and narrow acetabular ones, coxa valga, medial recumbency of the proximal tibial epiphysis and retarded bone age are usual findings.
