Overtreatment: Is a solution possible?

Screening is a useful tool for identifying potential health issues; however, it can also lead to overtreatment. Consequently, patients are sometimes harmed by unnecessary treatments and there are cost implications. Overtreatment can also occur in other areas of medicine besides screening and sometimes medical interventions are used to improve performance rather than to treat disease. In this paper, a distinction is made between the perspectives of the patient and the government. For patients, autonomy is important, and they can refuse life-saving treatments, assuming they have decision-making

Report from the 21st meeting of the European Society of Gynaecological Oncology (ESGO 2019).

This is a report from the 21st Meeting of the European Society of Gynaecological Oncology (ESGO 2019) held in Athens, Greece, November 2-5, 2019. The conference offered state of the art educational sessions, and oral and poster abstract presentations. The general sessions throughout the meeting focused not only on prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment, and translational research but also on emerging trends. Current innovations in gynecological cancers were also discussed. The new rare tumor guidelines project, a joint initiative with the ESGO-Gynecologic Cancer InterGroup, was officially

Ethical guidance for health research in prisons in low- and middle-income countries: a scoping review.

OBJECTIVES: This study examined the extent, range and nature of the published literature, prison policies and technical guidance relating to the ethical conduct of health research in prisons in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). STUDY DESIGN: Scoping Review. METHODS: We adhered to the five stages of the scoping review iterative process: identifying the research question, identifying relevant studies, study selection, charting the data, and collating, summarizing and content analysis of polices. Disagreements around allocation of content were resolved through team discussion. We also a

Scientific impact of movement disorders research from Southeast Asia: A bibliometric analysis.

BACKGROUND: The number of scientific publications on movement disorders from Southeast Asia (SEA) is thought to be low. Thus, we looked at the movement disorders research productivity among SEA countries and its associations with country-specific socioeconomic factors. METHODS: We performed a systematic search for publications indexed in PubMed, Scopus, Embase and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials from January 2000 to December 2019 with at least one author from SEA. Bibliometric indices were used to evaluate research impact. The country-specific socioeconomic characteristics were

Biotoxins in muscle regeneration research.

Skeletal muscles are characterized by their unique regenerative capacity following injury due to the presence of muscle precursor cells, satellite cells. This characteristic allows researchers to study muscle regeneration using experimental injury models. These injury models should be stable and reproducible. Variety of injury models have been used, among which the intramuscular injection of myotoxic biotoxins is considered the most common and widespread method in muscle regeneration research. By using isolated biotoxins, researchers could induce acute muscle damage and regeneration in a contr

"Go Ask Alice": The Case for Researching Schedule I Drugs.

The available treatments for disorders affecting large segments of the population are often costly, complex, and only marginally effective, and many have numerous side effects. These disorders include dementias, debilitating neurological disorders, the multiple types of drug addiction, and the spectrum of mental health disorders.Preliminary studies have shown that a variety of psychedelic and similar U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration Schedule I drugs may offer better treatment options than those that currently exist and pose potentially the same or even less risk than do legal psychoactive

Heterogeneity Confounds Establishment of "a" Model Microbial Strain.

Aspergillus fumigatus is a ubiquitous environmental mold and the leading cause of diverse human diseases ranging from allergenic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA) to invasive pulmonary aspergillosis (IPA). Experimental investigations of the biology and virulence of this opportunistic pathogen have historically used a few type strains; however, it is increasingly observed with this fungus that heterogeneity among isolates potentially confounds the use of these reference isolates. Illustrating this point, Kowalski et al. (mBio 7:e01515-16, 2016, https://doi.org/10.1128/mBio.01515-16) demonst

Monogenic diabetes: Implementation of translational genomic research towards precision medicine.

Various forms of early onset non-autoimmune diabetes are recognized as monogenic diseases, each subtype being caused by a single highly penetrant gene defect at the individual level. Monogenic diabetes (MD) is clinically and genetically heterogeneous, including maturity onset diabetes of the young and infancy-onset and neonatal diabetes mellitus, which are characterized by functional defects of insulin-producing pancreatic β-cells and hyperglycemia early in life. Depending on the genetic cause, MD differs in the age at diabetes onset, the severity of hyperglycemia, long-term diabetic complicat

Self-criticism in Behçet's disease and other autoinflammatory conditions.

BACKGROUND: Expandable cages are a recent development employed to reduce subsidence and improve fusion compared with static cages as they alleviate the need for repeated trialing or overdistraction of the disc space. This study aimed to compare the radiographic and clinical outcomes in patients undergoing lateral lumbar interbody fusion (LLIF) with either an expandable or static titanium cage. METHODS: This was a prospective study of 98 consecutive patients undergoing LLIF performed over a 2-year period, with the first 50 patients receiving static cages and the following 48 receiving expandab
