Experimental observations on the sex ratio of adult Schistosoma mansoni, with comments on the natural male bias.

The sex ratio of adult worms has been observed biased towards males in Schistosoma mansoni under natural conditions. The origin of this bias is unknown. This paper determines whether males are more infective than females under controlled experimental bisexual conditions, and hence if the sex ratio is male-biased as a consequence of this. The male and female cercarial infectivities in uni- and bisexual vertebrate host infections using a range of controlled cercarial sex ratios were studied. The results showed that, in experimental unisexual infections, male cercariae were more infective than fe

Sexual orientation and relationship choice in borderline personality disorder over ten years of prospective follow-up.

The purpose of this study was to assess the prevalence of homosexuality/ bisexuality and same-sex relationships in a sample of 362 hospitalized subjects, 290 with borderline personality disorder (BPD) and 72 comparison subjects with other personality disorders. At baseline and at five contiguous 2-year follow-up intervals, subjects meeting DIB-R and DSM-III-R criteria for BPD or at least one other personality disorder were interviewed using a semi-structured interview about their sexual orientation and the gender of intimate partners. Subjects with BPD were significantly more likely than compa…

Disproportionate use of polysubstance combinations varies by sexual identity among US adults.

Polysubstance use is a major public health concern affecting lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) adults, especially bisexual female adults. This study aims to identify the commonly used polysubstance combinations by LGB adults in the past 30 days and to determine whether these combinations differ by sexual identity and sex. Our analytic sample consisted of NSDUH 2021 and 2022 (n = 66,634 adults; 8.59% LGB adults). We used survey-weighted multinomial logistic regression models to assess the polysubstance combinations by sex. The most used substances were binge alcohol drinking, cannabis, cigarette

The conflicts individuals with ambiguous sexual characteristics suffer from are not the result of genetic features but of the rigid and dich … normative conceptualization of gender development. Starting from Freud's concept of constitutional bisexuality, Robert Stoller's theory, which has been firmly rooted in the mainstream of psychoanalysis for more than 40 years, will be critically reviewed. Perceptions of HIV risks and prevention strategies by rural and small city African Americans who use cocaine: views from the inside.

HIV/AIDS disproportionately affects African Americans, yet knowledge gaps exist regarding their views of risks and effective prevention strategies. This focus group study of rural and small city African Americans who use drugs sought to assess these perceptions. Common views of HIV risks included drug use, physical appearance as an indicator of HIV status, intentional transmission, having multiple partners, unprotected sex, bisexuality, and unfounded trust. Trading sex for drugs and unprotected sex when high were seen as drug use/HIV risk links, while HIV education and condom use were identifi…

Uptake of at-home self-collected dried blood spots for HIV, hepatitis C and syphilis screening among Māori gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men in Aotearoa New Zealand: an observational epidemiological study.

BACKGROUND: HIV testing is an integral component of prevention, reducing undiagnosed infection and promoting early treatment. Indigenous gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (GBM) are at increased risk of HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STIs), but may experience difficulties accessing clinical services. At-home blood-based self-collection may offer an alternative that bypasses such barriers. This study aimed to explore uptake of dried blood spots (DBS) among Indigenous Māori GBM in Aotearoa New Zealand. METHODS: The Sex and Prevention of Transmission Study is a national

Factors associated with human papillomavirus, hepatitis A, hepatitis B and mpox vaccination uptake among gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men in the UK- findings from the large community-based RiiSH-Mpox survey.

BACKGROUND: Gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) face a disproportionate burden of sexually transmitted infections and are eligible for targeted vaccinations for hepatitis A (HAV), hepatitis B (HBV), human papilloma virus (HPV) and mpox. This study examines the sociodemographic characteristics, sexual behaviours, and sexual healthcare service (SHS) use associated with vaccination uptake. METHODS: We undertook analyses of RiiSH-Mpox - an online, community-based survey with GBMSM recruited via social media and dating apps. We calculated vaccination uptake (≥1 dose) among e

Gay, Bisexual, and Other Men Who Have Sex With Men Who Are Not on Oral PrEP may be Less Interested in Available Injectable Products than in Oral PrEP: Examining Individual-Level Determinants of Interest and Barriers Across Products.

Approval of the first injectable PrEP product (cabotegravir) provides an exciting addition to oral PrEP that could encourage those not currently on PrEP to use it. However, few studies have explored interest in injectable cabotegravir among those at increased risk who are not currently on PrEP. We conducted an online survey with 327 gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBM) with limited PrEP history to explore their interest and intentions to use oral and injectable PrEP (cabotegravir), and examine barriers and individual-level predictors of both product types. Results showed th

Sexual minority disparities in opioid misuse, perceived heroin risk and heroin access among a national sample of US adults.

BACKGROUND: Lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) adults have elevated use of many substances compared to heterosexual adults, yet LGB disparities in specific types of opioid misuse and perceived opioid risk have not been fully characterized. METHODS: Data on 126,463 adults (including 8241 LGB adults) were from the 2015-2017 National Survey of Drug Use and Health. Logistic regression was used to estimate lesbian/gay (L/G) and bisexual disparities (relative to same-gender heterosexuals) for: lifetime prescription pain reliever misuse, heroin use and injection heroin use; past-year opioid misuse and

Medical, Nonmedical, and Illegal Stimulant Use by Sexual Identity and Gender.

INTRODUCTION: Major knowledge gaps regarding medical and nonmedical prescription stimulant use and illegal stimulant use (i.e., cocaine/crack/methamphetamine) by sexual identity and gender have implications for individuals' health and well-being. This study improves stimulant use measurement by differentiating the type of stimulant use and focusing on lesbian, gay, and bisexual subpopulations. METHODS: Data were pooled for adults in the 2015-2017 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (n=126,463; analyzed in 2019). Gender-stratified logistic regression models examined associations between sex

The association between sexual orientation, susceptibility to social messages and disordered eating in men.

OBJECTIVE: Much research points to higher levels of disordered eating and more negative body image in gay and bisexual men than in heterosexual men. The reasons for this difference, however, remain unclear. We hypothesized that disturbed body image and eating attitudes in gay and bisexual men would be partially explained by susceptibility to social messages. METHODS: Two hundred and sixty-two men (203 heterosexual, 46 gay and 13 bisexual) between 18 and 35 years of age participated in the study. They completed measures of disordered eating, body image, internalization of attitudes toward appe

Factors associated with 'feeling suicidal': the role of sexual identity.

This paper examines factors associated with feeling suicidal in a large sample of urban men in Sydney and Melbourne, aged 18-50, including heterosexual, gay and bisexual men, HIV antibody positive and HIV antibody negative. As in previous research, sexuality (being homosexual or bisexual) was found to be a major predictor of suicidality. The research went some way towards explaining the close relationship between feeling suicidal and sexual orientation. Sexuality interacts with feeling bad in that, once men feel moderately bad/depressed, they are more likely to feel suicidal if they are homose

Regulatory basis for reproductive flexibility in a meningitis-causing fungal pathogen.

Pathogenic fungi of the genus Cryptococcus can undergo two sexual cycles, involving either bisexual diploidization (after fusion of haploid cells of different mating type) or unisexual diploidization (by autodiploidization of a single cell). Here, we construct a gene-deletion library for 111 transcription factor genes in Cryptococcus deneoformans, and explore the roles of these regulatory networks in the two reproductive modes. We show that transcription factors crucial for bisexual syngamy induce the expression of known mating determinants as well as other conserved genes of unknown function.

Men's Reflections on Their Experiences of Gender-Based Violence.

Using Multicultural and Gender Case Conceptualization (MGCC) epistemology, the aim of this phenomenological study was to explore adult male victims' perceptions of gender and reflections on their experiences of gender-based violence (GBV). Data were analyzed using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA). Results indicated that, regardless of sexual orientation, participants experienced verbal and physical abuse due to their feminine gender expression, beginning in primary school and continuing through university and into the workplace. To reduce victimization, the men developed a range

Explaining Disparities in Severe Headache and Migraine Among Sexual Minority Adults in the United States, 2013-2018.

Previous work has not examined how the association of sexual orientation and severe headache/migraine may be explained by differences between sexual minorities and heterosexuals in sociodemographic and health-related characteristics. Using data from the 2013-2018 National Health Interview Survey, regression decomposition was used to identify determinants of disparities in headache/migraine between sexual minorities collectively and heterosexuals, as well as between bisexual men and gay men, and bisexual women and lesbians. The prevalence of headache/migraine was the highest among bisexual wome

Estimation of the magnitude of the HIV epidemic among homosexual men: utilization of survey data in predictive models.

A group of 709 randomly selected males aged 18-55 years living in the city of Amsterdam, the Netherlands, were questioned about sexual lifestyle and related behavior. A substantial proportion (10%) of these men appeared to be homo- or bisexual. Of these homo- and bisexual men, 16.5% were predicted to be HIV seropositive, using their behavioral information in logistic regression models derived from a second study among 506 homo- or bisexual volunteers who were questioned and tested for HIV antibodies as well. Generalizing the results of the sample, the magnitude of the homo- and bisexual popula

Population rates of HIV, gonorrhoea and syphilis diagnoses by sexual orientation in New Zealand.

INTRODUCTION: Globally, gay and bisexual men (GBM) are over-represented in HIV, syphilis and gonorrhoea cases. However, surveillance systems rarely provide meaningful measures of inequity, such as population-specific rates, due to a lack of sexual orientation denominators. HIV, gonorrhoea and syphilis are legally notifiable diseases in New Zealand (NZ); we calculate rates by sexual orientation for the first time. METHODS: We analysed 2019 national surveillance data on HIV, syphilis and gonorrhoea notifications disaggregated by sexual orientation. Unique health records identified duplicate not
