Sensing performances of spinel ferrites MFe2O4 (M = Mg, Ni, Co, Mn, Cu and Zn) based electrochemical sensors: A review.

The history of ferrites comes from many centuries and was fundamental in many fields. Initially, ferrites were extracted directly from nature, but in the last century, scientists learned to produce ferrites with different properties that gave origin to many advances in industrial and instrumental applications. More recently, the designed preparation of ferrites with nanometric size revealed remarkable characteristics. In the last years, different spinel ferrites were used as electroactive layers to build high-performance modified electrodes. In this review, it is presented a critical overview

Novel roles of prolactin and estrogens in breast cancer: resistance to chemotherapy.

Resistance to chemotherapy is a major complication in the treatment of advanced breast cancer. Estrogens and prolactin (PRL) are implicated in the pathogenesis of breast cancer but their roles in chemoresistance have been overlooked. A common feature to the two hormones is activation of their receptors by diverse compounds, which mimic or antagonize their actions. The PRL receptor is activated by lactogens (PRL, GH, or placental lactogen) originating from the pituitary, breast, adipose tissue, or the placenta. Estrogen receptors exist in multiple membrane-associated and cytoplasmic forms that

Exposure, risk, and potential sources of phthalates, alternative plasticizers, and phenolic compounds in Thai children: A two-region comparison study.

Phthalates and phenolic compounds are ubiquitous consumer chemicals, and children are particularly vulnerable to their potential health effects. In Thailand, however, information on children's exposure and regional variation remains limited. We recruited 250 children from two distinct regions of Thailand (Suphan Buri and Chiang Rai) in 2023, measured urinary concentrations of major metabolites of phthalates and alternative plasticizers as well as parent phenolic compounds, and administered questionnaires. The highest median concentrations were observed for the sum of di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate

Morphological profiling of environmental chemicals enables efficient and untargeted exploration of combination effects.

Environmental chemicals are commonly studied one at a time, and there is a need to advance our understanding of the effect of exposure to their combinations. Here we apply high-content microscopy imaging of cells stained with multiplexed dyes (Cell Painting) to profile the effects of Cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), Bisphenol A (BPA), and Dibutyltin dilaurate (DBTDL) exposure on four human cell lines; both individually and in all combinations. We show that morphological features can be used with multivariate data analysis to discern between exposures from individual compounds, concentrat

Effects of the prenatal environment on cryptorchidism: A narrative review.

Cryptorchidism, the absence of testes from the scrotum, is the most common genital disorder in boys and a risk factor for reduced fertility and testicular cancer. The mechanism responsible for cryptorchidism involves two discrete stages: a transabdominal and an inguinoscrotal phase. These phases of testicular descent are regulated by the prenatal sex hormone environment, including levels of testosterone, insulin-like factor 3, and calcitonin gene-related peptide. Environmental endocrine disruptors, which are unfavorable environmental factors, may also affect testicular descent through prenatal

Visualization of estrogen receptor transcriptional activation in zebrafish.

Estrogens regulate a diverse range of physiological processes and affect multiple tissues. Estrogen receptors (ERs) regulate transcription by binding to DNA at conserved estrogen response elements, and such elements have been used to report ER activity in cultured cells and in transgenic mice. We generated stable, transgenic zebrafish containing five consecutive elements upstream of a c-fos minimal promoter and green fluorescent protein (GFP) to visualize and quantify transcriptional activation in live larvae. Transgenic larvae show robust, dose-dependent estrogen-dependent fluorescent labelin

Sensitizing capacity and cross-reactivity of phenyl glycidyl ether studied in the guinea-pig maximization test.

BACKGROUND: Simultaneous contact allergies to the reactive diluent phenyl glycidyl ether (PGE) and epoxy resins based on diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) or epoxy resins of the bisphenol F-type have been reported. The latter epoxy resins contain three isomers of diglycidyl ether of bisphenol F (DGEBF). PGE, DGEBA, and DGEBF are chemically similar with respect to the reactive glycidyl group and an aromatic ring, making cross-reactivity one of the possible explanations to simultaneous reactions. AIM: To investigate the sensitizing capacity of PGE and the cross-reactivity of PGE versus th

Epigenetics of breast cancer: Modifying role of environmental and bioactive food compounds.

SCOPE: Reduced expression of tumor suppressor genes (TSG) increases the susceptibility to breast cancer. However, only a small percentage of breast tumors is related to family history and mutational inactivation of TSG. Epigenetics refers to non-mutational events that alter gene expression. Endocrine disruptors found in foods and drinking water may disrupt epigenetically hormonal regulation and increase breast cancer risk. This review centers on the working hypothesis that agonists of the aromatic hydrocarbon receptor (AHR), bisphenol A (BPA), and arsenic compounds, induce in TSG epigenetic si

Plastic-associated chemicals on vulvar skin - Dermal exposure and effects on keratinocytes.

Several plastic-associated chemicals (PACs), such as bisphenols and phthalates, are endocrine disruptors. There is little research concerning PAC presence on vulvar skin or in underwear fabric, which remains in prolonged daily contact with thinly keratinised regions of the vulva. We measured PAC concentrations in commercially purchased women's underwear and detected several PACs in 100% of samples; polyamide fabric had higher concentrations of dimethyl phthalate (DMP), diethyl phthalate (DEP), and bisphenol S (BPS) compared to cotton. Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) was the dominant PAC in b

Prenatal exposure to bisphenols, metals, and risk of fetal chromosome numerical abnormalities in high-risk pregnancies: Independent, combined, and interactive effects.

Prenatal exposure to bisphenols and metals has raised significant concerns regarding their potential impact on fetal development, particularly the risk of fetal chromosome numerical abnormalities (CNA). In this case-control study, we analyzed bisphenol and metal concentrations in amniotic fluid of high-risk pregnant women undergoing amniocentesis. Concentrations of bisphenols and metals were measured using ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry, respectively. Logistic regression and quantile-based g-computation were app

Bisphenol S as an emerging osteotoxicant: Mechanistic insights from osteoblasts and zebrafish models.

Bisphenol S (BPS) exposure has been shown to induce osteopathies such as osteoporosis, yet the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. To comprehensively evaluate the toxic effects and mechanisms of BPS on osteoblast differentiation and bone development, an integrated approach combining the hFOB1.19 human osteoblast cell line (in vitro) and zebrafish larvae (in vivo) were utilized. In hFOB1.19 cells, exposure to BPS (0, 1, 5, 10 and 50 µM) for 96 h (n = 3-4 replicates) disrupted osteogenic differentiation by downregulating key markers (RUNX2 and OPG) and induced mitochondrial dysfuncti

Effects of bisphenol A on murine salivary glands and human tumor cell lines.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is an endocrine-disrupting chemical with a potential role in endocrine cancers. However, the effects of BPA on the salivary glands have been barely explored. We investigated the impact of in vivo sub-chronic exposure to BPA and its in vitro effects on human salivary gland mucoepidermoid carcinoma cell lines. Male and female mice were exposed to BPA (30 mg/kg/day). Sublingual and submandibular salivary glands from an estrogen-deficiency model were also analyzed. BPA concentration in salivary glands was evaluated by gas chromatography coupled to ion trap mass spectrometry. Immu

Capsule phase microextraction of six bisphenols from human breast milk using a monolithic polyethylene glycol sorbent-based platform prior to high performance liquid chromatography-photo-diode array detection determination.

The determination of bisphenols in human breast milk is a matter of ongoing interest since it reveals the exposure levels in both lactating mothers, fetuses, and infants. Herein, capsule phase microextraction (CPME) is applied for the first time for the extraction of a mixture of bisphenols from human breast milk followed by their subsequent determination by high-performance liquid chromatography-photodiode array detection (HPLC-DAD). CPME is a recently introduced as an advanced micro preparative technique that meets the principles of Green Analytical Chemistry. Moreover, it integrates filtrat

Synthesis, characterization, and electrochemical and electrical properties of novel mono and ball-type metallophthalocyanines with four 9,9-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)fluorene.

The new mono-nuclear 4-5 and ball-type homo-dinuclear 6 phthalocyanines have been synthesized from the corresponding phthalodinitrile derivative 3. The synthesized compounds have been characterized by elemental analysis, UV-vis, IR,(1)H-NMR and MALDI-TOF-mass spectroscopies. The redox behaviours of the complexes were identified by cyclic voltammetry and square wave voltammetry. The temperature dependence of the electronic properties of compounds and adsorption of SO(2) on thin film of 6 were investigated by conductivity measurements using an interdigital transducer structure on glass substrate

Development of a generic lifelong physiologically based biokinetic model for exposome studies.

The current study within the frame of the HEALS project aims at the development of a lifelong physiologically based biokinetic (PBBK) model for exposome studies. The aim was to deliver a comprehensive modelling framework for addressing a large chemical space. Towards this aim, the delivered model can easily adapt parameters from existing ad-hoc models or complete the missing compound specific parameters using advanced quantitative structure activity relationship (QSAR). All major human organs are included, as well as arterial, venous, and portal blood compartments. Xenobiotics and their metabo

Effects of endocrine disrupting chemicals on myelin development and diseases.

In the central and peripheral nervous systems, myelin is essential for efficient conduction of action potentials. During development, oligodendrocytes and Schwann cells differentiate and ensure axon myelination, and disruption of these processes can contribute to neurodevelopmental disorders. In adults, demyelination can lead to important disabilities, and recovery capacities by remyelination often decrease with disease progression. Among environmental chemical pollutants, endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are of major concern for human health and are notably suspected to participate in ne

Endocrine-Disrupting Chemicals and Male Infertility: Mechanisms, Risks, and Regulatory Challenges.

Male reproductive health is increasingly threatened by endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), which interfere with hormonal homeostasis and reproductive physiology. Rising rates of male infertility have been linked to greater exposure to pollutants such as heavy metals, phthalates, pesticides, and bisphenol A. These compounds act through multiple mechanisms, including oxidative stress, apoptosis, receptor-mediated disruption of estrogenic and androgenic signaling, alterations in the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis, and heritable epigenetic changes. Such disruptions impair key outcome
