[The surgical treatment of carotid body tumor and prevention and treatment of complications].

Carotid body tumor is an uncommon paraganglioma tumor in the head and neck region. Carotid angiography remains the gold standard for this tumor.Surgical treatment has been universally accepted as the main treatment of CBT, resection of it is technically challenging because of the location. In order to reduce the morbidity of intraoperative and postoperative complications,we summarize the surgical treatment and the prevention and treatment of complication of this neoplasm, after retrieving the domestic and foreign literature.

Normal pressure hydrocephalus co-existing with a second dementia disorder.

An 87-year-old woman had both Lewy body dementia and normal pressure hydrocephalus simultaneously. One should not automatically exclude the possibility of normal pressure hydrocephalus simply because another neurodegenerative disorder is present, especially if the second disorder masks typical symptoms of normal pressure hydrocephalus. Better identification of dual diagnosis patients could lead to improvements in gait and incontinence following ventriculoperitoneal or lumboperitoneal shunting, even if the natural history of the other neurodegenerative disease remains unchanged.

[Chronic maxillary sinusitis of dental origin and nasosinusal aspergillosis. How to manage intrasinusal foreign bodies?].

About a series of 33 patients operated in the ENT Depart. Prof. Soudant-La Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital-Paris. Any emphasis was put on 11 cases of aspergillosis sinusitis. Most of the time, clinical signs are non specific. But X rays studies are of great help for the diagnosis. Treatment of chronic sinusitis of dental origin, particularly aspergillosis, remains surgical: caldwell-luc operation or endonasal approach. As a conclusion, the authors suggest systematic removal of all intrasinusal foreign body.

Role of Alpha-2-Microglobulin in the Treatment of Osteoarthritic Knee Pain: a Brief Review of the Literature.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Chronic knee pain remains a debilitating condition that remains difficult to manage. The purpose of this review, therefore, is to summarize current understanding of alpha-2-microglobulin in the treatment of osteoarthritic knee pain. Furthermore, we investigate its role in the anti-inflammatory properties of platelet-rich plasma (PRP). RECENT FINDINGS: Alpha-2-microglobulin, a 720-kD protein complex, is an active protease inhibitor with tremendous anti-inflammatory properties in animal models. A growing body of evidence suggests that this complex is the most instrumental fac

A comparison of surface features on submerged and non-submerged bone using scanning electron microscopy.

Skeletal remains are excellent sources of information regarding the deceased individual and the taphonomic history of their body. However, the accuracy of this information is governed by our ability to interpret features on the surface of a bone. Little research in this respect has been carried out on remains found in aquatic environments. This study compares damage features created on the surface of modern and archaeological bone found in a seawater environment, to surface features present on unmodified bone, archaeological bone, pathological bone and burned bone. Results show that no similar

Hypoglossal schwannoma masquerading as a carotid body tumor.

Study Objective. To describe the clinical presentation, evaluation, and treatment of a hypoglossal schwannoma. Methods. We report an unusual case of a hypoglossal schwannoma presenting as a pulsatile level II neck mass at the bifurcation of the external and internal carotid arteries, mimicking a carotid body tumor. Radiologic findings are reviewed in detail. Results. A 59-year-old female presented to a tertiary care medical center with complaints of a pulsatile right-sided neck mass. An MRA of the neck was obtained demonstrating a 5 cm mass located at the carotid artery bifurcation and causing

A Rare Case of Orbitocranial Penetrating Injury with Intracranial Wooden Foreign Body Residue.

Orbitocranial penetrating injuries (OPIs) caused by wooden foreign bodies (WFBs) are very rare and life threatening. Their diagnosis and treatment could be challenging for an ophthalmologist, requiring us to remain alert for possible intracranial extension. We present a case of a 52-year-old man with a residual wooden foreign body in the left frontal lobe. He had a notable history of trauma from a fall on a tree stump and surgical removal of a wooden foreign body from his left orbit 6 years ago. He was referred to us due to recurrent discharge from the eyelid wound. Wooden foreign body residue

Pulse granuloma as a complication following dental trauma in children.

Contamination and subsequent retention of foreign bodies within wound surfaces may negatively influence healing following maxillofacial injuries. Larger foreign bodies that produce embedded or impalement injuries of soft tissues are easily detected. However, smaller contaminants, such as sand, gravel, food particles, wood splinters, and glass fibers, may not be easily identified in the initial examination, and their remnants may remain within the injury site even after debridement. Tissue reactions depend on the host response, type of foreign body, and nature of the wound surface. The purposes

The making of a modern female body: beauty, health and fitness in interwar Britain.

In interwar Britain female athleticism, keep-fit classes and physical culture were celebrated as emblems of modernity, and women who cultivated their bodies in the pursuit of beauty, health and fitness represented civic virtue. This article argues that a modern, actively managed female body was part of women's liberation during this period. A modern female body required sex reform and birth control. Fitness culture was circumscribed by traditional notions of femininity. Women's competitive sport remained controversial and slimming in pursuit of fashion was widely condemned. Women from across t

Hyponatremia and hypokalemia in patients on peritoneal dialysis.

Hypokalemia occurs in up to 60% of patients on peritoneal dialysis (PD) for end-stage renal disease. It can be associated with poor clinical outcomes, including malnutrition and death. New evidence points to a link between hypokalemia and the risk of peritonitis. The serum Na(+) concentration is determined by the ratio of exchangeable Na(+) and K(+) to total body water. Hyponatremia may be caused by excessive thirst, a particular problem in patients on PD. Consistent with the relationship among the serum sodium concentration, total body cation content, and total body water, hyponatremia may al

[A rare cause of hemoptysis].

The existence of a bronchial foreign body is an unusual cause of haemoptysis. We observed a sixty two year-old women who presented several medium-abundance haemoptysis. They were associated with a systematic alveolar-interstitial radiological picture of the ventral upper right lobe. A right upper lobectomy showed that an old bronchial foreign body (piece of bone) was responsible for the systematic intra-alveolar bleeding. Though most of the breathed foreign bodies are expressed into immediate symptoms, some of them remained undiagnosed and may be responsible for haemoptysis, infectious complic

[Primary bronchial actinomycosis and foreign body].

This paper presents the fourth case reported on the association of primary bronchial actinomycosis and foreign body. The pathogenesis of this rare association has been linked to the low respiratory tract and a foreign body (chicken bone); it depends on its characteristics and how long it has remained lodged into the bronchial tree. The diagnosis of this case was very difficult and late. Several endoscopy procedures were required in order to detect it. Our patient has been treated successfully with parenteral penicillin in association with an original bronchoscopic procedure using a laser techn

T and B cell hyperactivity and autoimmunity associated with niche-specific defects in apoptotic body clearance in TIM-4-deficient mice.

TIM-4, a member of the TIM family expressed on antigen-presenting cells, binds to phosphatidylserine exposed on the surface of apoptotic bodies. However, the significance of this interaction in vivo remains unknown because other receptors have been implicated in the clearance of apoptotic bodies and could compensate for the TIM-4 deficiency in vivo. In this study, we describe the generation of TIM-4-deficient mice and address whether TIM-4 serves a unique function in vivo. We show that TIM-4(-/-) peritoneal macrophages and B-1 cells do not efficiently engulf apoptotic bodies in vitro, or clear

Programmable collective motion of polar solitons in chiral liquid crystals.

Collective motion is a fundamental mode of organization in systems ranging from biological assemblies to driven physical media. Reproducing and controlling such behavior in soft-matter systems remains challenging, as soliton-soliton interactions are often symmetric, which tends to confine collective dynamics to predominantly repulsive motion. Here, we demonstrate that soliton ensembles can be reversibly switched among disordered, linear, and circular motion by electrical control, enabling regulation of soliton population, velocity, and trajectories. Circular motion stabilizes soliton populatio

Functional genomics in Xenopus identifies ARHGAP10 as a congenital heart disease and ciliopathy gene.

Congenital heart disease (CHD) remains a major cause of pediatric morbidity and mortality, yet many patients lack a genetic diagnosis. Two studies identified rare deletions in ARHGAP10 (GAP10), a Rho GTPase-activating protein at 4q31.2 in individuals with heterotaxy and atrial septal defects, highlighting GAP10 as a new candidate CHD gene; however, the function of GAP10 has not been investigated. We demonstrate that gap10 deletion disrupts body axis extension, left-right organizer (LRO) formation, and ciliogenesis, leading to severe cardiac looping defects that closely mirror human CHD phenoty

The Role of Cannabis in Recurrent Adolescent Gynecomastia.

Gynecomastia is a common condition affecting adolescent males, and recurrence following surgical excision is not uncommon. Cannabis has been proposed as a potential endocrine system disruptor, though its role in gynecomastia or its recurrence remains unclear. We present a case series of 3 adolescent males who underwent initial excision for gynecomastia, reported postoperative cannabis use, and developed recurrence requiring secondary surgery. All patients had normal baseline endocrine evaluations and varied in body mass index, disease severity, and laterality. Recurrence occurred despite stabl

The intersection of epigenetics and immune thrombocytopenia: new insights into disease mechanisms and treatments.

Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is an autoimmune hematologic disorder that arises from an imbalance in immune responses, disrupting the delicate equilibrium of the immune system. An increasing body of research has indicated that immune-related genes hold promise as biomarkers for diagnosis and prognosis, with a particular focus on the roles of B and T cells in ITP pathogenesis. Despite these advancements, a deeper understanding of the underlying regulatory mechanisms governing these immune-related genes remains essential. This review aims to integrate the current body of evidence and provide fur

Comparative In Vivo Biocompatibility of Cellulose-Derived and Synthetic Meshes in Subcutaneous Transplantation Models.

Despite the increasing interest in cellulose-derived materials in biomedical research, there remains a significant gap in comprehensive in vivo analyses of cellulosic materials obtained from various sources and processing methods. To explore durable alternatives to synthetic medical meshes, we evaluated the in vivo biocompatibility of bacterial nanocellulose, regenerated cellulose, and cellulose nanofibrils in a subcutaneous transplantation model, alongside incumbent polypropylene and polydioxanone. Notably, this study demonstrates the in vivo biocompatibility of regenerated cellulose obtained

Challenges in Cardiovascular Evaluation and Management of Obese Patients: JACC State-of-the-Art Review.

Many unique clinical challenges accompany the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in people living with overweight/obesity. Similarly, physicians encounter numerous complicating factors when managing obesity among people with CVD. Diagnostic accuracy in CVD medicine can be hampered by the presence of obesity, and pharmacological treatments or cardiac procedures require careful adjustment to optimize efficacy. The obesity paradox concept remains a source of confusion within the clinical community that may cause important risk factors to go unaddressed, and body mass index is

Cutaneous T-cell lymphoma developing in surgical scars post cardiac surgery: A case study.

Cutaneous T-cell lymphomas are a class of non-Hodgkin lymphomas characterized by the infiltration of malignant T cells into the skin. Their precise pathogenesis remains incompletely understood, but persistent and specific antigen stimulation of skin-homing CD4+ memory T cells by external or internal factors, combined with an inflammatory cytokine-rich tissue microenvironment, may be critical in the development of cutaneous T-cell lymphomas. We present herein a case of primary cutaneous T-cell lymphoma arising in two surgical scars that developed 6 months post-operatively and were successfully
