Acute brain swelling is well known to be acute vasodilatation of cerebral vessels and sometimes results from brain injury. One of the causes of acute brain swelling may be disturbance of central control mechanisms of cerebral vessels. However, the presence of acute spinal cord swelling is little noticed. We present here a possibility that acute spinal cord swelling may be occur following the dysfunction of the cardiovascular center of the medulla. In urethane-anesthetized, paralyzed and artificially ventilated rats, the neurons in the rostral ventrolateral pressor area (VLPA), origin of the sy

Some contrast media are able to release histamine from isolated mast cells of the rat and produce degranulation of these cells. Such properties are fairly correlated with the ability to increase vascular permeability in vivo and to produce a drop in blood pressure. If histamine is similarly being released in humans many untoward effects of these agents referred to clinically might be thus explained.

Hypertension exerts a profound impact on the microcirculation, causing both structural and functional alterations that contribute to systemic and organ-specific vascular damage. The microcirculation, comprising arterioles, capillaries, and venules with diameters smaller than 20 μm, plays a fundamental role in oxygen delivery, nutrient exchange, and maintaining tissue homeostasis. In the context of hypertension, microvascular remodeling and rarefaction result in reduced vessel density and elasticity, increasing vascular resistance and driving end-organ damage. The pathophysiological mechanisms

Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are high-pressure, low-resistance arterial-venous shunts without intervening capillaries. Up to 60% of AVMs present with an intracranial hemorrhage; however, noninvasive neuroimaging has increasingly diagnosed incidental AVMs. AVM management depends on weighing the lifetime rupture risk against the risks of intervention. Although AVM rupture risk relies primarily on angioarchitectural features, measuring hemodynamic flow is gaining traction. Accurate understanding of AVM hemodynamic flow parameters will help endovascular neurosurgeons and interventional neuro

BACKGROUND: Port-wine stains (PWS) are congenital low-flow vascular malformations of the skin. PWS tend to become thicker and darker with time. Laser therapy is the gold standard and the first-line therapy for treating PWS. However, some resistant PWS, or PWS that have tissue hypertrophy, do not respond to this therapy. Our aim is to evaluate the role of surgery in the treatment of PWS birthmarks.
METHODS: A literature search was performed in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science (WOS) and Google Scholar for all papers dealing with surgery for port-wine stains, from January 2010 to December 2020 usi

Vancomycin is a hydrophilic antibiotic widely used in severe infections, including bacteremia and central nervous system (CNS) infections caused by Gram-positive bacteria such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), coagulase-negative staphylococci and enterococci. Appropriate antimicrobial dosage regimens can help achieve the target exposure and improve clinical outcomes. However, vancomycin exposure in serum and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is challenging to predict due to rapidly changing pathophysiological processes and patient-specific factors. Vancomycin concentrations may be

Escherichia coli is the most common Gram-negative bacillary organism causing neonatal meningitis. Escherichia coli meningitis remains an important cause of mortality and morbidity, but the pathogenesis of E. coli penetration of the blood-brain barrier remains incompletely understood. Escherichia coli entry into the brain occurs in the meningeal and cortex capillaries, not in the choroid plexus, and exploits epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and cysteinyl leukotrienes (CysLTs) for invasion of the blood-brain barrier. The present study examined whether EGFR and CysLTs are inter-related in

About 70% patients waiting for liver transplantation have a dyspnea. Two pulmonary vascular disorders can be associated with portal hypertension or chronic liver diseases: portopulmonary hypertension (PoPH) related to pulmonary small arteries remodeling and obstruction and hepatopulmonary syndrome (HPS) characterized by pulmonary capillaries dilatations and proliferations. PoPH is defined by the combination of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) (mean pulmonary artery pressure [PAP]≥25mmHg, with normal pulmonary artery wedge pressure≤15mmHg and pulmonary vascular resistance [PVR]>3 Wood unit

Engineered tumor-targeted anthrax lethal toxin proteins have been shown to strongly suppress growth of solid tumors in mice. These toxins work through the native toxin receptors tumor endothelium marker-8 and capillary morphogenesis protein-2 (CMG2), which, in other contexts, have been described as markers of tumor endothelium. We found that neither receptor is required for tumor growth. We further demonstrate that tumor cells, which are resistant to the toxin when grown in vitro, become highly sensitive when implanted in mice. Using a range of tissue-specific loss-of-function and gain-of-func

A relatively large body of evidence supports the notion that glomerular capillary wall and mesangial alterations in diabetic nephropathy involve biochemical alterations of glycoproteins in these structures. Evidence in experimental animals rendered diabetic reveals that the administration of heparin and other anionic glycoproteins can effectively prevent the biochemical alterations that promote albuminuria. Moreover, angiotensin II inhibits heparan sulfate synthesis, while heparins modulate angiotensin II signaling in glomerular cells, inhibiting aldosterone synthesis and lowering proteinuria

A patient with severe persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN) due to alveolar capillary dysplasia, congenital (ACD), is presented. In the treatment, apart from standard methods, high frequency oscillatory ventilation (HFOV), inhaled nitric oxide and activated C protein have been applied. In spite of treatment the patient died and post-mortem diagnosis was based on lung histopathology examination. ACD occurs very rarely and is a congenital disease. Diagnosis is by pulmonary tissue histopathology examination. Pathological structure of the lungs leads to severe dysfunction of gas

Prolonged cardiopulmonary bypass such as venoarterial bypass with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO) is becoming a potent therapeutic option in treating patients with severe respiratory and circulatory failure. However the chronic effects of this bypass modality have not yet been fully clarified. Recently, we developed an extremely durable thrombo-resistant ECMO system, and were successful with more than 5 months of continuous heparinless VA-ECMO in an animal experiment. This article presents the pathological findings on the lungs of the animal.A goat underwent VA-ECMO for a schedul

Today, chronic venous insufficiency affects millions of people but the investigation of veins and of venous diseases is still very poor. Additionally, the mechanism of the occurrence of varicose veins is not understood. Blood stasis is often associated with these pathological situations and we propose that resulting ischemic conditions can trigger the endothelium to release inflammatory mediators and growth factors. On one hand, the inflammatory mediators will recruit and activate neutrophils, which then infiltrate the venous wall and damage components of the extracellular matrix. On the other

Chronic administration of prostacyclin (PGI2) improves hemodynamics in patients with primary pulmonary hypertension, but abrupt cessation of infusion can cause severe dyspnea of unknown etiology. We hypothesized that the discontinuation of PGI2 results in platelet activation, thromboxane A2 production, and increased pulmonary vascular tone. To test this, six sheep with indwelling catheters were monitored during infusion of PGI2 and after its cessation. Infusion of PGI2 caused a reduction in mean systemic arterial pressure (MAP) and systemic (SVR) and pulmonary vascular resistances (PVR), a ris

Captopril, an inhibitor of angiotensin converting enzyme, is widely used clinically to manage hypertension and congestive heart failure. Here captopril is shown to be an inhibitor of angiogenesis able to block neovascularization induced in the rat cornea. Captopril acted directly and specifically on capillary endothelial cells, inhibiting their chemotaxis with a biphasic dose-response curve showing an initial decrease at clinically achievable doses under 10 microM and a further slow decline in the millimolar range. Captopril inhibition of endothelial cell migration was not mediated by angioten

Hyalinosis cutis et mucosae is a rare genetic disorder, primarily involving skin and mucous membranes, that has been described under various titles as lipoidosis lipoproteinosis and Urbach-Wiethe disease. A 17-year-old girl presented cutaneous macular lesions, skin scars, thickened lips and enlarged firm tongue; hoarseness was known since birth. The labial biopsy specimen was investigated by light and electron microscopy. Histologically there are deposits of amorphous, extra-cellular eosinophilic hyaline material in the upper thickened connective tissue. In the lower part changes are focal wit

Open tubular ion chromatography (OTIC) offers a lightweight, low-pressure and efficient platform for on-site ion analysis. Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is an attractive column substrate because of its mechanical strength, chemical resistance and thermal stability, yet conventional sulfuric-acid sulfonation limits ion-exchange capacity and requires long preparation times. Here, a mixed methanesulfonic and sulfuric acid reagent followed by acetone rinsing was used to streamline the sulfonation process, producing a roughened inner surface with higher functional group density. The optimized 25 μm i

BACKGROUND: Helminthiases inflict annual losses on the meat and dairy livestock industries. The commonest species of ruminant parasites are the nematodes: Strongyloides papillosus and Haemonchus contortus, which lay eggs in the intestine and enter the feces. There, the eggs develop into larvae, which when voided with the feces crawl onto plants.
METHODS: In our experiment, we evaluated the survivability of the noninvasive and invasive (L1-2 and L3, respectively) larvae of S. papillosus, H. contortus (L3), and Muellerius capillaris (L1) in vitro by subjecting each to natural compounds present

INTRODUCTION: Congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) is a defect involving herniation of the abdominal organs into the pleural cavity through an incompletely closed diaphragm. This defect is also accompanied by various types of pulmonary and bronchial hypoplasia and serious anomalies in the pulmonary vascular bed and pulmonary hypertension. Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is used in extreme cases resistant to standard treatment. There are no reports clearly indicating the optimal time to make a decision about the repair of CDH in paediatric patients on ECMO. In high-risk neonates (wi
