Families and Schools Together (FAST) for improving outcomes for children and their families.

BACKGROUND: Parents and carers have a major influence on children's learning and development from birth, through the school years, and into adulthood. Parental contributions to education include providing a secure environment in which to learn, providing intellectual stimulation, transmitting social norms and values, shaping the child's resilience through fostering literacy and problem-solving, and encouraging personal and social aspiration. Increasingly, providers of formalised education are recognising the primary role of parents, carers, and the wider family, as well as peers and the enviro

Correlates of adverse childhood events among adults with schizophrenia spectrum disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Multiple studies have found that childhood adversity is related to a range of poor mental health, substance abuse, poor physical health, and poor social functioning outcomes in the general population of adults. However, despite the high rates of childhood adversity in schizophrenia, the clinical correlates of these events have not been systematically evaluated. This study evaluated the relationship between adverse experiences in childhood and functional, clinical, and health outcomes among adults with schizophrenia. METHODS: The authors surveyed 569 adults with schizophrenia regard

Vulnerability within families headed by teen and young adult mothers investigated by child welfare services in Canada.

INTRODUCTION: Young mothers' families are at increased risk of child maltreatment and other poor health and social outcomes. METHODS: Chi-square analyses of pooled child welfare services data from the Canadian Incidence Study of Reported Child Abuse and Neglect (CIS-2003; CIS-2008) were used to compare 284 teen mothers (18 years or younger) and 800 young mothers (19-21 years) and their families with 5752 families where the mother was 22 years or older. RESULTS: Twenty-six percent of young mothers were 18 years or younger. Most (68% of teen-mother families and 57% of families with a young adu

Looking through different lenses at meeting places in disadvantaged Dutch neighbourhoods: A qualitative participatory study assessing needs, barriers and success elements for women with non-Western migration backgrounds and teenage girls.

OBJECTIVE: The living environment can significantly influence health negatively, particularly in disadvantaged neighbourhoods where risk factors and limited resources converge. Social cohesion and inclusive meeting places promote well-being, yet little is known about what makes these spaces accessible and meaningful for specific groups. This study explored how neighbourhood meeting places can better align with the needs of two often underrepresented groups: women with a non-Western migration background and teenage girls (12-18 years old), in four disadvantaged Dutch neighbourhoods. METHODS: A

The Happy Child Program's Intersectionality: Prenatal Home Visit Frequency, Food Insecurity Risk, Symptoms of Depression, and Parental Practices in Brazilian Women Assisted during Pregnancy.

Food insecurity (FI) is a critical issue in developing countries, particularly in low-resource settings, where it can worsen women's mental health. Psychosocial factors such as low household income, limited education, multiparity, and vulnerability are linked to depressive symptoms during pregnancy. Additionally, the family environment influences parental practices, which may impact mental health. This study evaluates the association of socioeconomic factors, parental practices, FI risk, and home visit frequency with depressive symptoms in pregnant women enrolled in the Happy Child Program (Pr

Maternal and Fetal Outcomes Among Pregnant Women Exposed to Violence.

Introduction Domestic violence against women is now widely recognized as a public health issue and a major human rights violation on a global scale. It is a significant risk factor for women's health problems. Pregnancy places a woman under significant physical and psychological pressure, even without additional stressors like abuse. This pressure can have a negative impact on both the mother's and the child's health. This study aims to assess the prevalence of violence among pregnant women and to determine the maternal and fetal outcomes among pregnant women exposed to violence. Materials and

Unveiling Gender Dysphoria Experiences in Turkish Young Adults: Challenges, Perspectives, and Implications in Health Care Settings.

PURPOSE: Gender dysphoria (GD) emerged as a focal area in child and adolescent development research. While the intricacies of diagnosis and interventions for GD intertwine with diverse socio-cultural challenges, a notable dearth of knowledge exists about the experiences of transgender (TG) individuals during their formative years in Turkey. This study aims to unveil these experiences, shedding light on the challenges, perspectives, and implications in health care settings. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Our study encompassed 125 participants: 62 TGs under clinical follow-up, and a control group of 63

Assessing the effectiveness of a pediatrician-led newborn parenting class on maternal newborn-care knowledge, confidence and anxiety: A quasi-randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The postpartum hospital stay is a unique opportunity for clinicians to educate parents on the importance of promoting early child development. Pediatricians are well-positioned to address both medical and developmental concerns during critical periods of development, yet very few parenting interventions are led by pediatricians. AIMS: To assess the impact of a novel one-hour long pediatrician-led Newborn Class on maternal knowledge, confidence, and anxiety. METHODS: We conducted a quasi-randomized controlled trial to evaluate the effectiveness of the Newborn Class. First-time mot

Do intrauterine or genetic influences explain the foetal origins of chronic disease? A novel experimental method for disentangling effects.

BACKGROUND: There is much evidence to suggest that risk for common clinical disorders begins in foetal life. Exposure to environmental risk factors however is often not random. Many commonly used indices of prenatal adversity (e.g. maternal gestational stress, gestational diabetes, smoking in pregnancy) are influenced by maternal genes and genetically influenced maternal behaviour. As mother provides the baby with both genes and prenatal environment, associations between prenatal risk factors and offspring disease maybe attributable to true prenatal risk effects or to the "confounding" effects

A qualitative evidence synthesis on perinatal screening for sickle cell disease in high-burden countries.

BACKGROUND: Sickle cell disease (SCD) screening can improve lives and reduce mortality through prevention and targeted treatment, but screening programmes are not universally available in the settings which could most benefit from them. We aimed to understand the implementation considerations for prenatal and newborn SCD screening programmes in countries with a high livebirth prevalence of SCD using the socioecological model of health. METHODS: We performed a systematic review of qualitative evidence relating to prenatal and newborn screening programmes for SCD in the thirty countries with th

Early-Life Experiences as Moderators of the Relationship Between Extreme Heat and Alcohol Consumption among Older Adults: Quantitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Climate change has intensified the frequency and duration of extreme heat events worldwide, posing growing public health risks, particularly for older adults who are physiologically more susceptible to heat-related illnesses. Concurrently, alcohol consumption among older adults in the United States has risen significantly over the past 2 decades, increasing vulnerability to dehydration, cardiovascular strain, and cognitive impairment during heat exposure. Emerging evidence suggests that environmental stressors such as extreme heat may exacerbate maladaptive coping behaviors, includ

Holding hope: maternal experiences of kangaroo mother care within sociocultural contexts in Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Kangaroo mother care (KMC) is a crucial method for improving the health outcomes of preterm and low birth weight (LBW) infants, particularly in resource-limited settings. However, barriers hinder mothers from effectively practicing KMC. This study aims to explore mothers' perceptions, hopes, and buy-in regarding KMC in a tertiary care center in Ethiopia. METHODS: A semistructured interview guide was developed on the basis of a literature review. In-depth interviews were conducted with a purposive sample of mothers who had practiced KMC within the past two years at Saint Paul's Hos

Association between hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and postpartum depression: a study on low- and middle-income countries with insights from Ghanaian healthcare professionals.

Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) and postpartum depression (PPD) are significant global health challenges affecting maternal and child well-being. HDP, including pre-eclampsia, gestational hypertension, and chronic hypertension, complicate up to 10% of pregnancies worldwide, with profound implications for maternal mortality, particularly in low- to middle-income countries (LMICs) like Ghana. The incidence of HDP is rising globally, contributing substantially to maternal deaths and severe perinatal outcomes such as stillbirth and low birth weight. Concurrently, perinatal mental health

Major depressive disorders in children aged 5-14 years: a Global Burden of Disease analysis from the perspective of exercise psychology.

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is an increasingly recognized contributor to morbidity and disability among children globally. While adolescent mental health has received growing attention, the burden and drivers of MDD in children aged 5-14 years remain inadequately characterized at the global level. METHODS: We conducted a comprehensive analysis using Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2021 data to quantify trends in the prevalence, incidence, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) of MDD in children aged 5-14 years across 204 countries and territories from 1990 to 2021. Social support factors associated with psychological resilience among women survivors of intimate partner violence in Gauteng, South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Women's experiences of intimate partner violence (IPV) increase their risk for mental ill health. However, some women exposed to IPV and adversity are psychologically resilient and function well despite these exposures. OBJECTIVES: We conducted a study to investigate the factors that are associated with psychological resilience among abused women, using data collected in a household survey conducted in Gauteng province of South Africa. METHODS: Data is from a cross-sectional study. A multi-stage random sampling approach was used to select a sample of 501 women. The World Health O
