Organization of the primary somatosensory cortex and wing representation in the Big Brown Bat, Eptesicus fuscus.

Bats are the only mammals capable of true powered flight. The bat wing exhibits specializations, allowing these animals to perform complicated flight maneuvers like landing upside-down, and hovering. The wing membrane contains various tactile receptors, including hair-associated Merkel receptors that might be involved in stabilizing bat flight. Here, we studied the neuronal representation of the wing membrane in the primary somatosensory cortex (S1) of the anesthetized Big Brown Bat, Eptesicus fuscus, using tactile stimulation with calibrated monofilaments (von Frey hairs) while recording from

[Viruses and bats: rabies and Lyssavirus].

Recent emerging zoonoses (hemorrhagic fevers due to Ebola or Marburg virus, encephalitis due to Nipah virus, severe acute respiratory syndrome due to SRAS virus...) outline the potential of bats as vectors for transmission of infectious disease to humans. Such a potential is already known for rabies encephalitis since seven out of the eight genotypes of Lyssavirus are transmitted by bats. In addition, phylogenetic reconstructions indicate that Lyssavirus have evolved in chiropters before their emergence in carnivores. Nevertheless, carnivores remain the most critical vectors for public health,

The application of genetic markers for EBLV surveillance in European bat species.

The United Kingdom has performed passive surveillance for European bat lyssaviruses (EBLVs) since 1987, and species-targeted surveillance since 2003. One critical component of these studies is the accurate identification of bats either submitted for testing or sampled in the field. Identification is dependent on numerous morphological characteristics. Whilst this is an effective means of bat identification, a number of problems remain with this approach. It relies on the experience of bat specialists and can lead to problems in differentiating members of the Myotis genus, particularly between

Ability of rabies vaccine strains to elicit cross-neutralising antibodies.

Two European Bat Lyssaviruses (EBLV-1 and EBLV-2) have been identified (n > 750 cases) in European bat species. In addition, EBLVs have been detected as "spillover" cases in three humans, one stone marten and four sheep. A further concern is the interaction of companion animals with infected bats and the possibility of subsequent lyssavirus infection. Cat-bat interactions represent approximately 32 % (n = 398) of passive lyssavirus surveillance submissions at the Veterinary Laboratories Agency (VLA) (1987-2004). Cats therefore represent a potentially significant spillover host. This study eval

Case report: isolation of a European bat lyssavirus type 2a from a fatal human case of rabies encephalitis.

A 55-year-old bat conservationist was admitted to Ninewells Hospital, Dundee, Scotland, on November 11, 2002, with an acute haematemesis. He gave a 5-day history of pain and paraesthesia in the left arm, followed by increasing weakness of his limbs with evidence of an evolving encephalitis with cerebellar involvement. The patient had never been vaccinated against rabies and did not receive postexposure treatment. Using a hemi-nested reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), saliva samples taken intravitam from different dates proved positive for rabies. A 400-bp region of the n

Histoplasmosis presenting as acute respiratory distress syndrome after exposure to bat feces in a home basement.

This report describes the clinical and epidemiological findings of an outbreak of histoplasmosis in Brazil involving four persons of the same family, one adult and three children. Contamination by fecal material of bats in the basement of the house was found to be the most likely cause of this outbreak. None of the patients had evidence of immune deficiency. The adult died of acute respiratory distress syndrome. A more severe presentation of the disease in this patient may be partly explained by a heavier exposure to the feces of bats.

Coexistence of FMRFAMIDE-like and LHRH-like immunoreactivity in the terminal nerve and forebrain of the big brown bat, Eptesicus fuscus.

The coexistence of molluscan cardioexcitatory neuropeptide (FMRFAMIDE) and luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) was studied in the nervous system of the big brown bat, Eptesicus fuscus, with immunocytochemistry. Within mammals, this is the first report of the coexistence of these neuropeptides in the terminal nerve. In juvenile and adult bats, both neuropeptides are distributed identically throughout the terminal nerve (tn), and they coexist in many parts of the prosencephalon from the olfactory bulb as far caudally as the interpeduncular nucleus. Peripherally, on the basal surface of

Plasticity and patterns of evolution in mammalian salivary glands: comparative immunohistochemistry of lysozyme in bats.

Salivary gland plasticity was a significant adaptive feature in the mammalian radiation. This plasticity is reflected in remarkable and well … t lysozyme to compare the parotid and principal submandibular glands in a set of 12 species of microchiropteran bats. With this data set we used comparative methods and phylogenetic trees to develop the foundations for testable hypotheses about the molecular genetics and adaptive significance of lysozyme production in bats. By comparing immunohistochemical r …

Fatal encephalitis and meningitis at the Gold Coast Hospital, 1980 to 1996.

The recent association of a fatal human case of encephalitis with a newly identified lyssavirus apparently acquired from a native Australian bat has highlighted the possibility that previous human infections have passed urecognised. Infected bats have been identified on the Queensland Gold Coast where extensive close contact between bats and humans has occurred for many years. In an attempt to identify nervously unrecognised cases of fatal lyssavirus encephalitis, the medical records of the Gold Coast Hospital over a 16 years period from 1980 to 1996 were reviewed. Of 20 cases coded as 'enceph

Five topographically organized fields in the somatosensory cortex of the flying fox: microelectrode maps, myeloarchitecture, and cortical modules.

Five somatosensory fields were defined in the grey-headed flying fox by using microelectrode mapping procedures. These fields are: the primary somatosensory area, SI or area 3b; a field caudal to area 3b, area 1/2; the second somatosensory area, SII; the parietal ventral area, PV; and the ventral somatosensory area, VS. A large number of closely spaced electrode penetrations recording multiunit activity revealed that each of these fields had a complete somatotopic representation. Microelectrode maps of somatosensory fields were related to architecture in cortex that had been flattened, cut par

Rabies-related viruses.

Five viruses related to rabies occur in Africa. Two of these, Obodhiang from Sudan and kotonkan from Nigeria, were found in insects and are only distantly related to rabies virus. The other three are antigenically more closely related to rabies. Mokola virus was isolated from shrews in Nigeria, Lagos bat virus from fruit bats in Nigeria, and Duvenhage virus from brain of a man bitten by a bat in South Africa. The public health significance of the rabies-related viruses was emphasized in Zimbabwe where in 1981 a rabies-related virus became epizootic in the dog and cat population. It is postulat

Paracrystalloids from mitochondria in thyroid follicular cells. Normal occurrence and experimental induction.

The ultrastructure of the follicular cells of the thyroid gland of bats caught in early June, when the euthyroid state is being restored following the phase of great thyroid activity that occurs at arousal, was studied. Several ultrastructural features were found which had not been observed in animals caught at other periods of the annual life cycle. The most striking ultrastructural feature was the presence in many cells of prominent, large membrane-enclosed paracrystalloid bodies. The paracrystalloids exceeded 6.0 mum in length and were approximately 1.0 mum. in width. Examination of transit

Bioinformatics-driven genome-wide identification of viral miRNAs in high spillover bat coronaviruses and their target genes in human.

Zoonotic spillover, driven by interspecies pathogen transmission, poses a significant global health threat. Recent studies highlight farmed fur animals as reservoirs for diverse coronaviruses, particularly Pipistrellus bat coronavirus HKU5 (Pi-Bat-CoV HKU5), which demonstrates high spillover potential. Additionally, the genetically distinct Pipistrellus bat coronavirus HKU5-CoV-2 (Pi-Bat HKU5-CoV-2), capable of utilizing the ACE2 receptor for entry into mammalian cells, further underscores the risk of bat-origin viruses infecting mammalian hosts. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small, endogenous non-co

The Nipah virus threat in India: Epidemiological trends, risk drivers, and lessons for pandemic preparedness.

Nipah virus (NiV), a WHO-priority zoonotic pathogen, poses a recurrent public health threat in India. Since its initial detection in 2001, India has encountered multiple NiV spillover events, including repeated outbreaks in Kerala and recent cases reported in West Bengal in 2026. Although the pig-amplified epidemic in Malaysia (1998-1999) and the seasonal outbreaks associated with NiV-contaminated date palm sap consumption in Bangladesh are extensively documented, India represents a unique and relatively understudied epidemiological setting. NiV outbreaks in India are primarily linked to the N

Impact of anthropogenic activities on the ecosystem and emergence of bat-borne zoonotic diseases.

About 70 % of zoonotic infectious diseases originate from wildlife reservoirs, particularly bats, primates, and rodents. Bats comprise about 20 % of all known mammal species worldwide and have been identified as reservoir and carrier hosts of various viral disease outbreaks. They also play a crucial role in viral adaptation and evolution. Given this inherent risk, this review focuses on how anthropogenic activities (habitat destruction, agricultural intensification, bushmeat hunting, and occupational exposure) and climate change are increasing the frequency and intensity of bat-human contact.
