AIMS: To investigate the success and recurrence rates and visual outcomes in a large case series of amelanotic posterior choroidal melanomas treated by means of primary photodynamic therapy (PDT) with verteporfin.
METHODS: Retrospective case series from a single specialist ocular oncology centre. All patients had a clinical diagnosis of choroidal melanoma and were selected for PDT based on tumour characteristics. Included patients had at least 24 months of follow-up from initiation of treatment and all but one had not received treatment prior to PDT.

Choroid plexus papillomas (CPPs) are rare adult tumours and metastatic disease is even less common, more typically associated with choroid plexus carcinoma. In 32 experiments involving transplantation of human malignant melanomas to the mouse mutant nude, tumourtake was observed in 14 instances. The tumour tissue which took and grew after inoculation was derived from malignant melanoma metastases of the skin (10 takes from 13 transplantations), and from primary malignant melanomas of the eye (4 takes from 6 transplantations). IMPORTANCE: Early detection of choroidal melanoma at a small tumor size is emphasized in the literature. However, there is little published information on the specific risks of plaque-irradiated small choroidal melanoma on visual acuity and metastasis.

The case is presented of 78 year-old who consulted due to decreased visual acuity in right eye for several months. Indirect ophthalmoscopy revealed an orange-yellow coloured choroidal mass at the posterior pole, without retinal detachment. With binocular indirect ophthalmoscopy, fluorescin angiography and ultrasonography 68 choroidal metastases in 52 eyes of 39 patients were diagnosed. The primary tumors were mainly breast cancer (81%) and lung cancer (10%). All the 91 cases of enucleated malignant melanoma of the choroid and ciliary body in an area of the Swedish west coast (630 000 inhabitants) during the period 1956-1975 are analysed. The incidence was 0.72/100 000 inhabitants and year, which means that there was no increase lately corresponding to the increase described for cutaneous melanoma. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to compare the functional and anatomical effectiveness of photodynamic therapy (PDT) versus proton beam therapy (PBT) in a real-life setting for the treatment of circumscribed choroidal hemangioma.
