The 10th edition (1989) of the Recommended Dietary Allowances provided estimated safe and adequate daily dietary intakes (ESADDI) for chromium and fluoride and summarized the substantial evidence for boron essentiality in animals. New endpoints, approaches and paradigms to use to formulate dietary guidance for these elements were reviewed by a discussion group that met as part of a national workshop. In order to study the difference of uptake and distribution between hexavalent (Cr6+) and trivalent (Cr3+) chromium in isolated rat hepatocytes, the cells were incubated with Cr6+ or Cr3+ (1 mM Cr) at 37 degrees C for up to 60 min. The in vivo cross-linking of cytokeratins to DNA in intact Novikoff ascites hepatoma cells exposed to the chromium salt K2CrO4 and cis-diamminedichloroplatinum(II) (cis-DDP) was studied. Cytokeratin-DNA complexes were obtained by high-speed centrifugation of cells solubilized in buffered 4% sodium dodecyl sulfate. The analytical utility of the reaction between aromatic nitro-compounds and electrogenerated chromium(II) can be extended to several previously undeterminable compounds by increasing the temperature of the reaction solution. For some substances the stoichiometry of the reduction is changed; for others the rate of reaction, along with precision and accuracy, is appreciably increased; in at least one instance the reaction becomes less satisfactory as an analytical method. Temperature is thus shown to be an important variable that may explain differences in previously reported stoichiometries.

We evaluated the usefulness of urinary excretion values in assessing mucosal damage in inflammatory bowel disease after administration of chromium 51-labeled EDTA either orally or rectally. In the oral study, 19 controls, 18 patients with Crohn's disease, and 13 patients with ulcerative colitis were given 100 microCi 51Cr-EDTA by mouth. The intensity of repair DNA synthesis in the lymphocytes of persons who were in contact with chromium compounds was studied depending on the contact duration. It is discovered that the intensity of repair DNA synthesis is reduced with the increase of the contact duration with chromium compounds. It is suggested that the mutagenic effect of chromium compounds is connected with the influence on the repair DNA synthesis in human cells.

Examples of chromic and chromate salts have been examined for their effects on a cultured Chinese hamster cell line. The responses studied were cytotoxicity, mutagenesis and clastogenesis.
