A model designed to produce chronic communicating hydrocephalus in dogs has been developed in our laboratory. The animals tolerate the procedure well and the yield of animals with communicating hydrocephalus is high. Serial cisternograms show ventricular entry first with "clearing" and later with "stasis". CSF pressures are initially increased, but when the ventricles become enlarged the pressure falls into the normal range. Grossly there is generalized ventricular enlargement and, on histological studies, the ependyma is flattened and denuded. Periventricular edema occurs in the white matter.

To determine the contribution of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) to cerebral edema formation in bacterial meningitis, we used a VEGF neutralizing antibody to block VEGF in rabbits, following induction of meningitis by intracisternal inoculation with 10(9) heat-killed pneumococci. In order to design a selective M1 muscarinic agonist, we synthesized SR 95639A (morpholinoethylamino-3-benzocyclohepta-(5,6-c)-pyridazine, dihydrochloride), a semi-rigid analogue of the aminopyridazine antidepressant drug minaprine. SR 95639A displaced [3H]pirenzepine from its binding sites in rat hippocampal membranes with an IC50 value of 0.27 microM. A detailed analysis of the distortion of the subarachnoid cisterns produced by intraventricular tumours of the fourth ventricle was carried out on a clinical material of 30 patients examined with pneumography. The cisternal distortions in cases with a tumour originating from the roof of the ventricle have been compared with those in tumours originating from the floor, and the typical appearances for each group of tumours are recorded. Two cases of intracranial penetration of a plastic or wooden chopstick via the optic canal are described. CT scans showed the chopsticks as linear hypodense structures in the suprasellar cistern contiguous with the optic canal. In one case, MR imaging was performed, which clearly depicted the foreign body and adjacent brain structures. Although they are extremely rare, transorbital intracranial penetrating injuries via the optic canal require physicians' awareness.
