Regional warming and emerging vector-borne zoonotic dirofilariosis in the Russian Federation, Ukraine, and other post-Soviet states from 1981 to 2011 and projection by 2030.

We analyze through a climatic model the influence of regional warming on the geographical spreading and potential risk of infection of human dirofilariosis in Russia, Ukraine, and other post-Soviet states from 1981 to 2011 and estimate the situation by 2030. The model correctly predicts the spatiotemporal location of 97.10% of 2154 clinical cases reported in the area during the studied period, identified by a retrospective review of the literature. There exists also a significant correlation between annual predicted Dirofilaria generations and calculated morbidity. The model states the progres

Unraveling the increasing burden of allergies: Spatiotemporal dynamics of pollen allergy risk in China.

Pollen allergies have increased significantly worldwide in recent years. However, its mechanism from an ecological perspective has not been fully elucidated. Here, we report, for the first time, the spatial distribution patterns of artificially planted allergenic plants (APAPs) and naturally distributed allergenic plants (NDAPs) in China. Field investigations (2007-2023) and ecological niche modeling efforts revealed that APAPs are concentrated in economically developed urban regions, while NDAPs exhibit distinct ecological niches across climatic gradients. Further risk analysis indicates that

Strange plants and the weirding climate: parasitic plant physiology under climate change.

Parasitic flowering plants are often seen as keystone species due to the broad influence they exert on communities worldwide. Positive and negative effects associated with parasitic plant infestation have been documented for a variety of species in multiple locations and under different experimental conditions. However, the impact of the different drivers of climate change on these plants has only recently begun to be analyzed in more detail. In this context, most studies have dealt with modeling future distribution ranges of parasite species and assessing potential ecological impacts. Buildin

Distribution of Desmodus rotundus and Its Implications for Rabies in Mexico.

Rabies is one of the zoonoses with the most significant impact on domestic herbivores, representing a mortality of 100,000 individuals and an economic loss of US$97 million per year in Latin America. The common vampire bat (Desmodus rotundus) is the primary reservoir for livestock rabies and is naturally distributed in Latin America. The concern arises from the possibility that climate change could facilitate the species' arrival to the southern USA. In this study, we used ecological niche modeling to estimate the distribution of D. rotundus in the present time and under future climate change

Severe Climate-Driven Range Contraction of Taverniera abyssinica A. Rich, an Endangered and Locally Popular Medicinal Plant in Ethiopia.

Taverniera abyssinica A. Rich. is one of the most important and well-known medicinal plants used by local communities in Ethiopia. This critically endangered shrub is traditionally used to treat stomach ulcers, fever, soreness, and pain, and it is widely valued for its antipyretic and analgesic properties. In this study, we applied ensemble species distribution models using four algorithms (BRT, RF, GAM, GLM), 10-fold cross-validation, and three model replicates to predict the current and future distribution of T. abyssinica across Ethiopia. Suitable habitats were mapped at the district level

Forecast and early warning of hand, foot, and mouth disease based on meteorological factors: Evidence from a multicity study of 11 meteorological geographical divisions in mainland China.

BACKGROUND: Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) is a significant public health issue in China. Early warning and forecasting are one of the most cost-effective ways for HFMD control and prevention. However, relevant research is limited, especially in China with a large population and diverse climatic characteristics. This study aims to identify local specific HFMD epidemic thresholds and construct a weather-based early warning model for HFMD control and prevention across China. METHODS: Monthly notified HFMD cases and meteorological data for 22 cities selected from different climate zones fr

Weather elements and the risk of tuberculosis incidence in China from 2005 to 2019: a county-level large observational study.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major public health challenge in China. Although meteorological factors are known to influence its transmission, their nonlinear and lagged impacts across regions and seasons remain unclear. We quantified these effects using the most detailed national data set available and explored how climate information can enhance TB prediction and control. METHODS: We conducted a nationwide ecological time-series study by integrating weekly TB surveillance data (2005-19) with high-resolution meteorological and air pollution models. We assessed associations between

Game-day temperatures are predictive of National Football League game outcomes when teams from different climates compete against each other.

NFL teams may have an advantage over their opposition when players are more familiar with game-day temperatures; however, relationships between game-day air temperature and team performance had not been examined using official at-stadia air temperatures. Game data from 2017 to 25 were collected from NFL "Gamebooks." Data were extracted for games contested by a team based in a cool climate >39° N (North teams, n = 17) against a team based in a warm climate <39° N (South teams, n = 15). Data extracted included game-day temperature (°C), game location (North, South), game outcome (win, no-win [re

Record-setting heavy precipitation occurrence in 2024.

Precipitation extremes have increased globally in recent decades, consistent with a warming climate. We find that 2024 experienced a record- … ropospheric responses and long-term warming sustained and amplified extremes through boreal summer. Climate models indicate that years with 2024-level FP≥99 typically require either stronger El Niño forcing or concurrent multi-basin sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies. Diagnostic projections within constrained ensemble members suggest that ∼40% of the 2024 a …

Vertical motions in clouds from EarthCare satellite and a global storm-resolving modeling.

Understanding vertical motions in clouds is essential for improving weather and climate models but remains challenging due to limited observations. The newly launched EarthCARE satellite with a Doppler radar now provides global measurements of how fast particles fall through clouds, offering a way to estimate vertical air movements. In this study, we provide an initial assessment of EarthCARE’s Doppler radar observations by comparing them with high-resolution global simulations using NICAM and a satellite simulator. We analyze two representative cases of frontal and convective precipitation to…

Large emissions of CO2 and CH4 due to active-layer warming in Arctic tundra.

Climate warming may accelerate decomposition of Arctic soil carbon, but few controlled experiments have manipulated the entire active layer. To determine surface-atmosphere fluxes of carbon dioxide and methane under anticipated end-of-century warming, here we used heating rods to warm (by 3.8 °C) to the depth of permafrost in polygonal tundra in Utqiaġvik (formerly Barrow), Alaska and measured fluxes over two growing seasons. We show that ecosystem respiration is ~30% higher in warmed plots than in control plots (0.99 μmol m-2 s-1 versus 0.67 μmol m-2 s-1, p < 0.0001, n = 79). Additionally, th

Short-term effects of atmospheric pressure, temperature, and rainfall on notification rate of community-acquired Legionnaires' disease in four European countries.

Legionnaires' disease (LD) is caused by the inhalation of aerosols containing Legionella, a Gram-negative bacteria. Previous national- or regional-level studies have suggested an impact of climate on LD incidence. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of temperature, rainfall, and atmospheric pressure on short-term variations in LD notification rate. EU/EEA Member States report their LD surveillance data to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control. Community-acquired LD cases reported by Denmark, Germany, Italy, and The Netherlands with onset date in 2007-2012

Historical DNA reveals the demographic history of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) in medieval and early modern Iceland.

Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) vertebrae from archaeological sites were used to study the history of the Icelandic Atlantic cod population in the time period of 1500-1990. Specifically, we used coalescence modelling to estimate population size and fluctuations from the sequence diversity at the cytochrome b (cytb) and Pantophysin I (PanI) loci. The models are consistent with an expanding population during the warm medieval period, large historical effective population size (NE), a marked bottleneck event at 1400-1500 and a decrease in NE in early modern times. The model results are corroborated b

The perceived impact of extreme weather events on care for people with HIV or tuberculosis and HIV in Zimbabwe: a survey-based multicentre cross-sectional observational study and formative evaluation.

BACKGROUND: The growing threat to health systems posed by extreme weather events (EWEs) disproportionately affects people living with HIV and tuberculosis disease in high-burden, low-resource settings. In Zimbabwe, for example, the 2023-24 El Niño-induced drought intensified food insecurity and reduced access to clinics and medication for such vulnerable populations. We aimed to conduct a formative evaluation to assess the perceived impact of climate change and EWEs on HIV and tuberculosis determinants and service delivery and identify potential climate-adaptive health-service strategies. Organisational climate as a social-organisational context for teacher burnout: the mediating role of attitudes towards the teaching profession.

INTRODUCTION: Teacher burnout is an important occupational well-being concern that may reflect school-level organisational conditions and teachers' profession-specific psychological evaluations. This study examined the direct and indirect associations among organisational climate, attitudes towards the teaching profession, and burnout among 424 lower-secondary and high-school teachers in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. METHODS: A cross-sectional correlational design was employed. Data were collected using self-report measures and analysed through partial least squares structural equa

Predictive modeling of sand fly distribution incriminated in the transmission of Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis and the incidence of Cutaneous Leishmaniasis in the state of Paraná, Brazil.

Southern Brazil concentrates a considerable number of cases of cutaneous leishmaniasis reported since 1980, and Paraná is the state that most records CL cases in the region. The main sand fly species incriminated as vectors of Leishmania (Viannia) braziliensis (Vianna,1911) are Migonemyia (Migonemyia) migonei (França, 1920), Nyssomyia (Nyssomyia) neivai (Pinto, 1926) and Nyssomyia (Nyssomyia) whitmani (Antunes & Coutinho, 1936). In this study, we evaluated areas with climatic suitability for the distribution of these vectors and correlated these data with CL incidence in the state. The occurre

A multilevel analysis of LGBT-relevant laws and sexual and gender minority mental health: evidence for the protective role of inclusive policies.

BACKGROUND: Sexual and gender minority (SGM) individuals experience elevated rates of depression and anxiety, largely attributed to chronic exposure to stigma, discrimination, and social exclusion. Less is known about whether state-level policy climates may buffer the mental health impacts of stress among SGM populations. METHODS: We used data from the All of Us Research Program (2020–2022) to examine whether state-level LGBTQ policy climates; measured using the Movement Advancement Project (MAP) Total Tally Score (range: –18.5 to 38.5), moderated associations between general perceived stress

Interface of Climate and Environmental Change on Food Systems-A Report from the "Agriculture and Diet: Value Added for Nutrition, Translation, and Adaptation in a Global Ecology" (ADVANTAGE) Project Working Group 3.

As the climate changes, investigation at the intersection of climate and food systems is critical to understand broader impacts on human nutrition and health. This work seeks to 1) identify reciprocal interactions of climate and environmental change (CEC) and food systems, 2) illuminate research gaps in CEC interactions with food systems, and 3) identify paths to respond to and mitigate the impact of CEC on food systems. We discuss CEC and food system interactions via 4 pathways. Food systems are influenced by CEC through shifting climate normals and altered instances of extreme events. The ph
