This is a survey of the pharmacokinetics and mechanisms of action, orthopedic use, antimicrobial activity, and adverse reactions to erythromycin, lincomycin and clindamycin, tetracycline, chloramphenicol, polymyxins, vancomycin, and fosfomycin. Although these antibiotics are rarely preferred to more active drugs such as the beta-lactams or aminoglycosides in orthopedic sepsis, they are nevertheless highly beneficial and in some situations can be the first-choice drug.

The activities of 16 antimicrobial agents against 103 clinical isolates of Campylobacter jejuni were tested. All the strains were susceptible to kanamycin and gentamicin. Chloramphenicol, nalidixic acid, and clindamycin were active against most of the strains. More than one-third of the strains were resistant to the tetracyclines and 12.5% were resistant to erythromycin.

The aerobic and anaerobic microbiology and management of 69 children who had chronic suppurative otitis media were studied retrospectively. A total of 188 isolates (103 anaerobic and 85 aerobic) were recovered. Anaerobic organisms alone were isolated from 11 (16%), aerobic bacteria only in 21 (30%) and mixed aerobic and anaerobic flora was present in 37 (54%).
