A real-time feedback system stabilises the regulation of worker reproduction under various colony sizes.

Social insects demonstrate adaptive behaviour for a given colony size. Remarkably, most species do this even without visual information in a dark environment. However, how they achieve this is yet unknown. Based on individual trait expression, an agent-based simulation was used to identify an explicit mechanism for understanding colony size dependent behaviour. Through repeated physical contact between the queen and individual workers, individual colony members monitor the physiological states of others, reflecting such contact information in their physiology and behaviour. Feedback between th

An intelligent colony optimization imaging method for composites health monitoring using ultrasonic guided wave.

Damage imaging technology based on ultrasonic guided wave can characterize and visualize structural damage. However, current imaging methods require high accuracy in wave packets information extraction, resulting in artifacts, large spots and false imaging. Therefore, an intelligent colony optimization imaging method is proposed to transform the damage imaging problem into the scattering sources search problem. The number of imaging trajectories through potential scattering sources is employed as the fitness function to assess the damage possibility in this individual. The fitness function is

Long-range alteration of the physical environment mediates cooperation between Pseudomonas aeruginosa swarming colonies.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa makes and secretes massive amounts of rhamnolipid surfactants that enable swarming motility over biogel surfaces. But how these rhamnolipids interact with biogels to assist swarming remains unclear. Here, I use a combination of optical techniques across scales and genetically engineered strains to demonstrate that rhamnolipids can induce agar gel swelling over distances >10,000× the body size of an individual cell. The swelling front is on the micrometric scale and is easily visible using shadowgraphy. Rhamnolipid transport is not restricted to the surface of the gel but

Quantitation of pesticides in bee bread collected from honey bee colonies in an agricultural environment in Switzerland.

Pesticide contamination of bee products is a widespread phenomenon. Due to its composition, bee bread is affected by both lipophilic and hydrophilic substances. As proof of concept of a monitoring campaign and to better understand the extent of contamination, we developed an analytical method based on a modified QuEChERS extraction, with subsequent separation by liquid chromatography and detection by mass spectrometry. This allowed for the quantitation of 51 agricultural- or beekeeping-associated pesticides in bee bread. The workflow was applied to 60 samples taken biweekly throughout spring t

Pilot imaging of the colony stimulating factor 1 receptor in the brains of virally-suppressed individuals with HIV.

OBJECTIVE: Neuroimmune activation is a putative driver of cognitive impairment in people with HIV (PWH), even in the age of modern antiretroviral therapy. Nevertheless, imaging of the microglial marker, the 18 kDa translocator protein (TSPO), with positron emission tomography (PET) in treated PWH has yielded inconclusive findings. One potential reason for the varied TSPO results is a lack of cell-type specificity of the TSPO target. DESIGN: [ 11 C]CPPC, 5-cyano- N -(4-(4-[ 11 C]methylpiperazin-1-yl)-2-(piperidin-1-yl)phenyl) furan-2-carboxaminde, is a radiotracer for use with PET to image the

Granulocyte-colony-stimulating Factor-resistant Neutropenia and Polyneuropathy Presenting as Severe Complications of Sjögren's Syndrome.

Primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) has multi-dimensional manifestations, including neutropenia and polyneuropathy. We herein report a 76-year-old woman with pSS initially presenting as severe granulocyte-colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF)-refractory neutropenia and axonal sensorimotor polyneuropathies (SMP). Systemic glucocorticoid administration had reduced neutrophil-associated immunoglobulin G (NAIgG) on the neutrophil surface as detected using flow cytometry, resulting in the development of neutropenia. A patient with pSS concomitant with axonal SMP might show severe neutropenia as aggressive

The Epidemiology of Invasive, Multipleantibiotic-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae Infection in a Breeding Colony of Immunocompromised NSG Mice.

Klebsiella pneumoniae (Kp) is a gram-negative opportunistic pathogen that causes severe pneumonia, pyelonephritis, and sepsis in immunocompromised hosts. During a 4-mo interval, several NOD.Cg-PrkdcscidIl2rgtm1Wjl/SzJ (NSG) breeders and pups in our facilities were diagnosed with Kp infections. An initial 6 adult and 1 juvenile NSG mice were submitted for necropsy and histologic examination because of acute onset of diarrhea and death. The evaluation revealed typhlocolitis in 2 of the mice and tritrichomoniasis in all 7. Escherichia coli positive for polyketide synthase (pks+) and Kp were isola

Assessment of Squalor in Migrant Colonies of Thiruvalla Province of Kerala, India using Rapid Survey Technique.

BACKGROUND: Domestic squalor refers to households that are extremely cluttered, in a filthy condition, and where the accumulation of items such as personal possessions, rubbish, excrement and decomposing food creates an environment that jeopardizes the health and wellbeing of the occupant(s). In India, an estimated 258 million are migrants. They are more likely to live in squalor due to inferior socio-economic status and no permanent residence. This poses a threat to the health of the migrants and the neighbors. OBJECTIVE: To assess the squalor and morbidity pattern among the migrants of Migr

Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor reduces the endoplasmic reticulum stress in a rat model of diabetic cardiomyopathy.

Prolonged endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress contributes to the apoptosis of cardiomyocytes, which leads to the development of diabetic cardiomyopathy. Previously, we reported that the granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) reduces the cardiomyocyte apoptosis in diabetic cardiomyopathy; however, the precise mechanisms associated with this process are not yet fully understood. Therefore, in this study, we investigated whether the mechanism of the anti-apoptotic effect of G-CSF was associated with ER stress in a rat model of diabetic cardiomyopathy. Diabetic cardiomyopathy was induced in r

New insight into the mechanism of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) that induces the mobilization of neutrophils.

Over the past 20 years, granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) has driven the attention of researchers as a therapeutic agent for curing patients suffering from neutropenia. Despite the successful use of G-CSF, it currently requires daily injections, which are inconvenient, expensive, and distressing for children. Therefore, an alternative strategy for using G-CSF for treatment is needed. Understanding the G-CSF structure, expression, mechanism of action, and how it induces neutrophils mobilization is crucial to producing promising cancer therapy. The ability of G-CSF to mobilize hemato

Clozapine rechallenge following neutropenia using granulocyte colony-stimulating factor: A Quebec case series.

BACKGROUND: Clozapine has a unique efficacy profile among individuals suffering from treatment-resistant schizophrenia, but is associated with hematological side effects. The use of granulocyte colony-stimulating factors (G-CSF) to allow clozapine continuation or rechallenge has emerged as a promising option, but evidence is still scarce. AIM: To describe the largest case series so far published regarding this practice. METHOD: A national clozapine hematological monitoring database was consulted to identify all patients who had had neutrophil count <1.5 × 109/L since 2004 in Quebec and was c

Key novelties in the evolution of the aquatic colonial phylum Bryozoa: evidence from soft body morphology.

Molecular techniques are currently the leading tools for reconstructing phylogenetic relationships, but our understanding of ancestral, plesiomorphic and apomorphic characters requires the study of the morphology of extant forms for testing these phylogenies and for reconstructing character evolution. This review highlights the potential of soft body morphology for inferring the evolution and phylogeny of the lophotrochozoan phylum Bryozoa. This colonial taxon comprises aquatic coelomate filter-feeders that dominate many benthic communities, both marine and freshwater. Despite having a similar

Albumin fusion with granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor acts as an immunotherapy against chronic tuberculosis.

A long duration of treatment and emerging drug resistance pose significant challenges for global tuberculosis (TB) eradication efforts. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop novel strategies to shorten TB treatment regimens and to treat drug-resistant TB. Using an albumin-fusion strategy, we created a novel albumin-fused granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (albGM-CSF) molecule that harnesses albumin's long half-life and targeting abilities to enhance the biostability of GM-CSF and direct it to the lymph nodes, where the effects of GM-CSF can increase dendritic cell populat

Granulocyte Macrophage Colony-Stimulating Factor-Specific Autoantibodies and Cerebral Nocardia With Pulmonary Alveolar Proteinosis.

In this study, we report the history of a 40-year-old man with a primary cerebral abscess caused by Nocardia abscessus that led to the discovery of autoimmune pulmonary alveolar lipoproteinosis (anti-granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor [GM-CSF] autoantibodies). Anti-GM-CSF autoantibodies promote immunodeficiency and should be monitored to prevent opportunistic and disseminated infections and to diagnose asymptomatic pulmonary alveolar lipoproteinosis.

Cannabis and psychosis: revisiting a nineteenth century study of 'Indian Hemp and Insanity' in Colonial British India.

BACKGROUND: In nineteenth-century British India, concern regarding large numbers of asylum patients with 'Indian Hemp Insanity' led to establishment of the Indian Hemp Drugs Commission. The exotic cannabis plant was widely used in pharmacopeia and a source of government revenue. The Commission was tasked with determining the public health risks of cannabis use, particularly mental illness. This analysis of the Commission report seeks to highlight the status of 1892 cannabis research and compare it with current evidence for medical and recreational cannabis use. METHODS: Detailed historiograph
