Integrating Social Media Monitoring Into Public Health Emergency Response Operations.

Social media monitoring for public health emergency response and recovery is an essential response capability for any health department. The value of social media for emergency response lies not only in the capacity to rapidly communicate official and critical incident information, but as a rich source of incoming data that can be gathered to inform leadership decision-making. Social media monitoring is a function that can be formally integrated into the Incident Command System of any response agency. The approach to planning and required resources, such as staffing, logistics, and technology,

The impact of decentralisation on sexual and reproductive health services in Ghana.

This paper analyses the impact of decentralisation on the political organisation, management and provision of sexual and reproductive health services in Ghana. It draws on qualitative research and interviews with key informants from the Ministry of Health, donors, NGOs, regional and district health management teams, local government and community leaders. Within a national reproductive health policy framework, previously disparate family planning, maternal and child health, STI and HIV/AIDS programmes have become more integrated, and donors have pooled or co-ordinated their funding. Some decis

Training Community-Academic Teams to Use Low-Cost Air Monitors: A Mixed Method Evaluation of the RISE Communities Program.

Concerns regarding poor air quality in communities experiencing disproportionately high levels of air pollution frequently motivate formation of community-academic partnerships. Low-cost air monitors can assess air pollution but require specific training. The RISE Communities program was created to support partnerships in air quality training and community-engaged research. The RISE Communities program in-person training took place in Cincinnati, OH, in summers 2023 and 2024. The training included hands-on workshops, lectures, and monthly webinars with continued expert guidance for one year fo

Male partner influence on family planning and contraceptive use: perspectives from community members and healthcare providers in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

BACKGROUND: South Africa faces numerous reproductive challenges that include high rates of unplanned and adolescent pregnancies. The uptake and utilization of family planning services and modern contraception methods depend on numerous factors. The male partner plays a key role in reproductive health but data on this topic are outdated or have a predominant HIV prevention focus. The purpose of this paper is to explore the influence of male partners on family planning and contraceptive (FP/C) uptake and use within the contemporary South African setting, and to identify further areas of explorat

Preferences for community-based asynchronous-review eye clinics in the UK: A discrete choice experiment among patients, healthcare professionals, and the public.

The United Kingdom government's 10 Year Health Plan for England sets out three shifts for a future-ready health service in England: shifting care from hospitals to communities, harnessing technology in health and care, and prioritising prevention over treatment. In this spirit, a large eye-hospital network in central London piloted a community-based, technician-led, asynchronous/virtual-review clinic to monitor stable chronic eye conditions and reduce avoidable harms, a model which could supplement traditional clinician-led services. Understanding stakeholder preferences around services is cru

Opportunities and challenges in utilizing community assets to extend chronic care management in podoconiosis endemic areas: Evidence from Northwestern Ethiopia.

Community-based chronic care intervention is important in the control and prevention of lifelong conditions such as podoconiosis and similar 'intensive disease management' neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). Despite a call for such interventions, few efforts have been made to identify opportunities and challenges related to their implementation. Employing a qualitative approach, this study explored the possibility of engaging community actors, physical places and networks to promote chronic care management in rural Ethiopia. We gathered data from affected individuals, community members, local

Using Intervention Mapping to Develop a Trauma-Informed Sexual Health Program for Native American Youth.

Native American adolescents and young adults experience persistent sexual and reproductive health inequities shaped by collective trauma, historical oppression, and ongoing structural violence. Although culturally responsive sexual health programs have increased in recent years, few interventions focus specifically on older adolescent and young adult women or intentionally integrate trauma-informed approaches. This article describes using Intervention Mapping to design a culturally relevant, trauma-informed sexual and reproductive health education intervention for Native American older adolesc

How a community-engaged therapeutic garden immersion shapes rural intentions among medical students and strengthens student-community partnerships.

BACKGROUND: Rural workforce maldistribution persists, and short rural immersions that embed students in community life may strengthen rural intentions and deepen understanding of social determinants. This study examined a community-engaged, therapeutic gardening immersion as a novel place-based rural learning context in two Western Australian Wheatbelt towns. METHODS: A mixed-methods design was used. A pre-placement survey of Year 3 medical students (n = 22) captured baseline intentions and preferences. Post-placement, semi-structured interviews were conducted with students (n = 22) and commu

The Red River Cart Model: a Métis conceptualization of health and well-being in the context of HIV and other STBBI.

OBJECTIVES: Métis people experience health inequities and often face discrimination when accessing health services. Métis-specific services are limited, and pan-Indigenous approaches to health services fail to acknowledge heterogenous identities and distinct health needs of the Métis. This study explored a Métis response to HIV and other sexually transmitted and blood borne infections to inform public health services development for Métis people. METHODS: As part of the DRUM & SASH Project, this study used a community-based research approach which privileged Métis knowledges and processes. Th

Improving Access to the Transportation Alternatives Program for Rural Communities.

Rural small towns with small main streets and compact downtown development can be ideal locations to create walkable communities. The Centers for Disease Controls and Prevention (CDC)'s High Obesity Program (HOP) funds Cooperative Extension programs to implement strategies to improve food access and support active transportation in high obesity (often rural) counties. The Louisiana State University (LSU) AgCenter HOP program had previously partnered with rural low-income communities to create Complete Streets plans but was challenged to find ways to implement those plans. Prostate cancer screening in African American and Caribbean males: detriment in delay.

Men of the African diaspora are diagnosed with prostate cancer much later than Caucasians and the mortality rate is significantly higher in these groups than among Caucasians. This study investigates health beliefs surrounding prostate health in a sample of African American and Caribbean men and identifies reasons men have for delaying or avoiding prostate screenings. One hundred African American and Caribbean men recruited from three churches, aged 37-89, were surveyed about their health seeking behaviors and knowledge of prostate cancer. Forty-five of these men also attended a seminar on the
