Occupational health survey of farm workers by camp health aides.

Little is known about the magnitude of occupational health problems among migrant farm workers. A community-based cross-sectional survey was conducted in two migrant farm worker communities: Homestead, Florida, and Kankakee, Illinois. Camp Health Aides (CHAs) interviewed 425 workers about job tasks, personal protective equipment (PPE), field sanitation, work exposures, and selected health conditions. Limited provision of personal protective equipment was reported among those reporting early re-entry tasks: 35% in Kankakee and 42% in Homestead were provided gloves, and 22% in Homestead and 0% i

Policymakers' concerns linking tobacco and Indigenous communities in India: A qualitative analysis of parliamentary questions (1952-2022).

Tobacco use and associated disease burden remain high among Indigenous communities in India. Despite an overall decline in tobacco consumption over the last few decades, the social disparities in tobacco use have widened, with Indigenous communities experiencing the least decline. Existing tobacco control policies lack specific considerations for Indigenous communities. Hence, as part of a broader research initiative focusing on the health of Indigenous communities, we explored how parliamentarians in India have framed their concerns about tobacco in reference to Indigenous communities over ti

Village-Integrated Eye Worker trial (VIEW): rationale and design of a cluster-randomised trial to prevent corneal ulcers in resource-limited settings.

INTRODUCTION: Corneal opacity is a leading cause of blindness worldwide. In resource-limited settings, untreated traumatic corneal abrasions may result in infection and ultimately, opacity. Although antimicrobial treatment of corneal ulcers may successfully cure infections, the scarring that accompanies the resolution of infection can still result in visual impairment. Prevention may be the optimal approach for reducing corneal blindness. Studies have employed community health workers to provide prompt administration of antimicrobials after corneal abrasions to prevent infections, but these st…

Gaps in Knowledge and Practice of Cervical Cancer Screening among Primary Health Care Workers in Lagos State, Nigeria: A Cross-Sectional Study.

UNLABELLED: Abstract. BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer is a major public health concern globally, particularly in low- and middle-income countries where access to screening and early diagnostic services is limited. Healthcare workers at the Primary Health Care (PHC) level play critical roles in promoting cervical cancer prevention through health education, implementing low-cost cervical cancer screening approaches in low-resource settings, and providing referral services. However, gaps in knowledge and practice among PHC workers may hinder effective cervical cancer control programs. OBJECTIVES: T

A mixed methods approach to evaluating community drug distributor performance in the control of neglected tropical diseases.

BACKGROUND: Trusted literate, or semi-literate, community drug distributors (CDDs) are the primary implementers in integrated preventive chemotherapy (IPC) programmes for Neglected Tropical Disease (NTD) control. The CDDs are responsible for safely distributing drugs and for galvanising communities to repeatedly, often over many years, receive annual treatment, create and update treatment registers, monitor for side-effects and compile treatment coverage reports. These individuals are 'volunteers' for the programmes and do not receive remuneration for their annual work commitment. METHODS: A

Successes and problems in family planning administration: experiences in two districts of Kerala, India.

The administrative organizations of the Ernakulam and Malappuram Districts' family planning programs during 1970-74 and the ways they dealt with typical problems of program organization are examined. Lack of personnel, poor staff morale, inadequate supplies, and political and religious opposition to various contraceptive methods, especially sterilization, existed to varying degrees in both districts' programs. The Ernakulam experience, involving mass sterilization camps that were part of an overall district development program, documents the effectiveness of a strong central leader. The Malapp
